Boko Haram Bombed the Only Bridge Linking Maiduguri, Biu & Damboa, Villagers areTrapped! [Photo] Posted: 14 Jul 2014 11:25 AM PDT Some suspected Boko Haram men over the weekend bombed a bridge linking Maiduguri with Biu and Damboa using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). A large portion of the Madafuma Bridge was damaged, thereby making it impossible to link Maiduguri from Biu, Garkida, Numam and parts of Taraba. A resident, Mallam Musa Yakubu, said the incident took place on Saturday at about 2am. "We heard a loud bang and when we gathered in Madafuma village we found out that the bridge linking us with Biu Local Government Area and MA Dara Girau had been blown off. Motorists heading for Maiduguri from Biu especially long vehicles, had no option than to turn back to Gombe. 'How Yoruba Movie Actors Are Used And Dumped' – Ajirebi aka Pa James Reveals! Posted: 14 Jul 2014 11:10 AM PDT There is no doubt that Kayode Olasehinde, aka Ajirebi or Pa James, is a comedian of note. The man, whose act of comedy comes naturally, was engaged in a chat with TOPE OLUKOLE, as he travelled down the memory lane, especially on  his role in the famous soap, Super Story, among other issues. For how long now have you been playing the role of Pa James? Since the production started and by my calculation, that should be about 13 years now. Does that mean no one has played that role aside you? No one, it's been only me. Papa Ajasco has been changed more than once. Before us, some actors had done Super Story in a big form. The first Papa Ajasco was Peter Fatomilola. After then was the TV series where Biodun Ayoyinka took over as Papa Ajasco. After him, when there was a crisis, Femi Ogunronbi took over, but thank God, the crisis has been settled and Biodun Ayoyinka is back in the fold. During the crisis period, it was not only Biodun Ayoyinka that left even the late Mama Ajasco, Boy Alinco and Miss Pepeye also left. It wasn't the same case that made Pepeye leave anyways. In her own case, she got married and her husband wasn't based in Nigeria, so she had to relocate. What I'm driving at is that you were the only one that survived the onslaught then, how did you manage it? It was just God. One thing in this life is that one should be patient; a saying of the old ones has it that if one is patient, one can cook a stone till it gets soft. Everything is not money, you might be offered big money, but the aftermath of it might not be too good. It's not that I'm not money conscious, too but thank God for everything; and whatever the issues were then, it has been settled. How did you feel when the former cast of Papa Ajasco were sent away? There is no one I can't work with really, but when they were not there, I felt that it would have been better if these people were around. Not that those with which we were working together were not good, they were also professionals. I have noticed that you do less Yoruba movies these days, why? I do feature in some selected few. You see, our people in Yoruba movie sector seem to belong to the set of people I would refer to as "Use and Dump". Though they didn't do that to me, they have done it to some people. They would patronise you and offer you peanut, and the moment you demand for a higher pay, they would abandon you and by so doing, their movies are lacking in some areas. You will notice that some of the things we introduced into movies to create suspense are no longer there. They are aware, but because they don't want to spend much, they overlook such areas. What they normally do is to call their friends to come and partake in their movies and give them something, not the correct fee. But now, this career has gone beyond giving casts transport fare alone, while they (producers) would buy cars after the production. They want to cheat us. If a producer comes to me and we agree on fees, I will feature in his movie, but no more peanuts. I have paid my dues and I have responsibilities to meet. AT LAST! President Goodluck Jonathan Ready To Meet Parents Of Chibok Girls! Posted: 14 Jul 2014 10:36 AM PDT Three months after over 200 schoolgirls were abducted by Islamic militants, Boko Haram, in Chibok, Borno State, North-Eastern Nigeria on April 14, 2014, President Goodluck Jonathan has agreed to meet with their parents. Jonathan made this commitment on Monday, 14 July, 2014 during a meeting he had behind closed door with a young Pakistani girls' education advocate, Malala Yousafzai. Malala, who was shot by the Taliban three years ago for campaigning for girls' education, disclosed this at a press conference held after the meeting with the Nigerian president in Abuja. According to the education advocate, President Jonathan also assured her that efforts are ongoing to ensure safe release of the girls from terrorists' den. Malala told newsmen that she believed President Jonathan was serious with the two promises, adding that she looks forward to the girls' release. Also speaking at the press conference, the Director of Communications, Malala Foundation, Eason Jordan, informed that President Jonathan also promised to ensure scholarship for the abducted girls. Jordan stated that Malala pledged to support the scholarship promised by President Jonathan with $200,000, saying that Nigeria's annual budgetary allocation for education is too meager. Malala stated: "I am here in Nigeria on my 17th birthday for a price which is to see that every child goes to school. This year, my objective is to speak up for my Nigerian sisters about 200 of them who are under the abduction of Boko haram and I met President, Goodluck Jonathan for this purpose. "I convey the voice of my sisters who are out of school or who are still under the abduction of Boko Haram. And for those girls who escaped from the terrorists' den but still do not have education. And in the meeting, I highlighted the same issues which the girls and their parents told me in the past two days. "The parents said they really want to meet with the President to share their stories with him. And I asked the President that if he wants to meet with the parents of the girls, he assured me that he would meet with them." The teenager added: "I spoke to the President about the girls who complained that they cannot go to school despite the fact that they want to become doctors, engineers and teachers. But the government is not providing them any facility. They also need health facility, security, and the government is not doing anything. "These are the issues I presented to the President today. He promised that something would be done for these girls."  It could recalled that a lot of people have accused President Jonathan for showing too little concern for the plight of the abducted schoolgirls in Borno State. The president was slammed for attending a political rally few hours after the girls were reported missing on 14 April, 2014. Also, some Nigerians have said it is high time Jonathan agreed to negotiate with the Boko Haram insurgents since all other measures to rescue the girls seems not to be working.The Boko Haram sect had repeatedly said in videos posted on the internet that it would only release the kidnapped girls in exchange for its members in Nigerian prisons. 'How I got pregnant in SS1, Lost the child and got my life back'- Ogun state lawmaker reveals! Posted: 14 Jul 2014 10:37 AM PDT In this very revealing interview with City People, Hon. Adijat Adeleye Oladapo, a lawmaker in the Ogun state House of Assembly, opened up about her life, of how she got pregnant when she was in secondary school, how the baby daddy denied the child and how she had to relocate to have her baby only for the child to die 18 months later. In this very deep interview, Hon. Oladapo talked about what she did to change her life.  Read Excerpts... "While I was in secondary school, I was a brilliant student. In my primary school I came second best student in our G2 exams but unfortunately, I started moving with some people who were more experienced and exposed than I was. One way or the other, I got pregnant when I was in SS1. The person who was responsible denied it because I was young and naive. I usually keep to myself a lot. My parents didn't know I was pregnant after four months and the guy also didn't know until about 4 months, although he equally impregnated about 2 other girls at the same time. He was a big boy in secondary school, the Senior Prefect, very brilliant. It all started by exchanging novels and textbooks. I had to leave Akute where my parents stayed to live with my paternal grandfather in Kajola, a small village which was hard for me to endure because the viallage had nothing. I had my baby in December 1991. After the naming of the baby, my family held a meeting and asked me what I wanted to do and I told them I wanted to go back to school. My paternal grandmother was totally against it, simply because she felt it was a waste sending a girl child to school after what I had done but my father was ready to give me another chance which I will forever be grateful for. I enrolled in a school not far from my house because of my baby and I repeated my class. Unfortunately, the child died at 18months in 1993. It was like double jeopardy for  me, nothing to show for the stigma and missing school. When he was buried, I went to his grave and requested from God to help me because I was determined to be successful which was like a vow. I even cursed the boy who got me pregnant because he denied the pregnancy, that he would not be greater than me in life. I don't know his level now but I am grateful for what I am today. I have forgiven him. After my secondary school, I decided to leave home to begin my journey. In 1998, I was admitted into the University of Lagos, things were tight for me then but someone introduced me to a job which was thrift collecting and daily contribution. I started working there and for years, I collected daily contributions in Ketu market and some other popular markets in Lagos state. I didn't have enough time to attend classes. I had to trek some places so my money would be enough. It was while I was working as a thrift collector, while coming from the office one day I stopped at my mother's shop to take some foodstuff from her shop. I met a man there who bought most of the foodstuffs and we started talking. That was the man I married and we have two kids. Three-year-old Girl who 'Woke' at her own Funeral 'has Now Died' [Video] Posted: 14 Jul 2014 10:40 AM PDT A three-year-old girl who woke during preparations for her funeral has now died, according to new reports.{If } The miraculous moment the young girl started breathing again at a church in Aurora in the Philippines was caught on film. Scroll Down to Watch the video below.. The little girl was originally declared dead on Friday morning after suffering a fever in hospital. Her family were preparing for her burial on Saturday afternoon when a neighbour of the girl's parents saw the girl move her head. After being lifted out of the coffin she was given water and taken to the hospital before returning home with her parents. But sadly, reports now suggest the girl did not survive and has been declared dead once again. A doctor assessed her again today and found no signs of life. 'If you hide Lagos bombing from people you can’t hide it from Allah'– Boko Haram Leader, Shekau Reveals! Posted: 14 Jul 2014 07:24 AM PDT Islamic sect, Boko Haram, has claimed responsibility for June 25 bomb attacks in Lagos and Abuja which claimed several lives. Five persons died in the Lagos explosion which occurred very close to Folawiyo tank farm while that of Abuja which went off in a shopping mall killed 22 persons. Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, in a 16-minute video obtained by AFP yesterday also mocks the social media and protest campaign, BringBackOurGirls, which emerged after the Islamists kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls on April 14 from Chibok. The girls, whose abduction has drawn unprecedented attention to Boko Haram's five-year rebellion, are not pictured in the video, which was given to AFP through similar channels as past messages. One previous recording showed more than 100 of the hostages, some of whom are Christian, reciting Muslim prayers. Shekau also said his loyalists carried out twin car bombings in May in Jos and a June attack at a college in Kano. Shekau claims Abuja, Lagos bomb attacks "We were the ones who detonated the bomb in filthy Abuja," Shekau said in the video referring to a June 25 attack on a popular shopping centre in Abuja that killed at least 22 people. Later that day a huge explosion also rocked the Apapa, which the authorities blamed on a cooking gas explosion, with no casualties. "A bomb went off in Lagos. I ordered the bomber who went and detonated it," Shekau says in the video, which shows him flanked by at least 10 gunmen in front of two armoured personnel carriers and two pick-up trucks. "You said it was a fire incident," he added. "Well, if you hide it from people you can't hide it from Allah." Shekau, in boasting about the Lagos attack, incorrectly identifies the Governor of Lagos State, taunting Adams Oshiomhole, who is in fact the Governor of Edo State. Lagos State is governed by Babatunde Fashola. Declared a global terrorist by the United States and sanctioned by the UN Security Council, Shekau is thought to have previously claimed credit for attacks that he did not directly order. Near the beginning of the video, Shekau calls several of the world's most prominent Islamist extremists his "brethren." "May Allah protect you," he said, listing IS chief, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Al-Qaeda head Ayman al-Zawahiri, Taliban leader Mullah Omar and several others. Speaking in English, Shekau recited the BringBackOurGirls slogan used by activists to press for the release of schoolgirls. "BringBackOurGirls… bring back our army," he says, in what may be reference to a previous offer that the hostages could be freed if Nigeria releases Boko Haram fighters held in custody. B'Haram blows off Maiduguri-Biu road bridge Meanwhile, some gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members weekend planted Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs under the popular Madafuma bridge linking 185km Biu-Damboa- Maiduguri federal road where it exploded and damaged some remarkable portion of the bridge leaving motorists and passengers stranded. The road has remained a death trap for the past two years with terrorists ambushing motorists and passengers leaving hundreds dead and the kidnapping of innocent civilians. A few days ago, there was an ambush on the road where the terrorists sacked 195 Battalion of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, after killing the Commanding Officer along side a Divisional Police Officer and over 15 soldiers and six policemen. REVEALED!! How Nollywood shared President Jonathan’s N3Billion cash gift! Posted: 14 Jul 2014 06:31 AM PDT I still remember the ecstasy that greeted the announcement of the grant. That historic Saturday, March 3, 2013, will surely remain imperishable in the life of Nollywood. It was a gaily evening inside the State House, Marina, Lagos. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, sat in the midst of an expectant Nollywood crowd. It was a rendezvous of everybody that was somebody in Nollywood. Even the most elusive man, in Nollywood, Kenneth Nnebue, the inspiration to the very industry being celebrated was present. It was the first time a Nigerian President would be sitting with Nollywood practitioners for a dinner just to say, "hey guys, you have done well; I appreciate your contribution to job creation in this country". President Jonathan was hosting Nollywood to celebrate with them 20 years of the home video industry. He had demonstrated an unshaking love and recognition for Nollywood. He had earlier in 2010 announced a $200 Million loan for the creative industry. But collateral clogs had made it practically impossible for practitioners to access the loan managed by the Nigeria Export Import Bank (NEXIM). But this evening in this finest hour for Nollywood, the President decided to demonstrate his love further. If the loan was interpreted to be political because election was drawing close, he was now a bonafide President, not canvassing for votes. And so, having treated Nollywood to some delicious meal plus a fabulous patriotic song performed by Timi Dakolo, the President of the world's most populous black nation, Dr. Jonathan literarily sent even the roof of the State House flying as he announced a grant of N3 billion for Nollywood. Celebration! Jubilation! Wow! Wow! Wow! Nollywood went wild. This is no loan! This is 'dash'. A gift! A grant! Right there and then, questions, apprehension, fear followed. Who will receive the money? How will it be shared? "Nna, how we go share this money? Is the cash here," a producer teased. But the President soon provided the answer. "This grant will be managed by the Ministry of Finance under the supervision of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy". The mention of Okonjo-Iweala added to the joy of the practitioners. This was one minister that had spoken so eloquently of Nollywood. She had spoken unequivocally on many occasions about the capacity and capability of our motion picture industry to create jobs. She believes that if Nollywood is given support and properly managed, it could be a major contributor to Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). She is therefore a loyal advocate of Nollywood. Above all, Nollywood sees her as an exemplary government official with an untrammeled integrity. And, so, Nollywood felt safe, sure that in a matter of weeks, the money would be in their pockets. It was not to be. It will turn out a long, tortuous journey through the wilderness, a grinding odyssey to a grant. GLIMPSES OF THE GRANT: HOPE RISING On Saturday, April 27, 2013, some Nollywood practitioners vowed they smelt their money. They could see it and almost touch it, they said. And the reason for this is simple. The Honourable Minister of Finance, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, and the Honourable Minister of Culture, Tourism and Strategy, High Chief, Edem Duke, who was the second Minister appointed by President Jonathan to join in the fund's management, had gathered them once again. This time, it was at Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. Over 60 practitioners but essentially heads of guilds, associations, and generally stake holders gathered in this arena of hope. The much awaited money now seemed available. The ministers had come to consult the owners of the money to know how to 'share' it. "I swear, I can smell this money", an old practitioner enthused; ecstatic that in a matter of days, he would have his share. "What we have come here to do is to continue the initiative of Mr. President in trying to support our creative arts industry, particularly Nollywood", Dr. Okonjo-Iweala opened up. "The idea is to recognise the talent in this industry and the fact that it is a generator of jobs for our young people. As you know, the industry has generated over 200,000 direct jobs, one million indirect jobs, US$250 million, equivalent in value and we believe that we could double and triple all these, if government has some supportive measure to help the industry", Dr Okonjo-Iweala said with candour to the delight of Nollywood. The minister finally revealed that she and her team had been brainstorming on how Nollywood would use its money. They came to the conclusion that the grant should be put into Distribution, Capacity Building and Film Production. Script writing was to be part of film production. They needed to seek Nollywood's opinion in order to move forward. Apart from some little suggestions, the practitioners were in consensus that the two ministers and their team had done a good job. But the questions in the inner recesses of the practitioners' minds remained, "where is the money? When are we getting it?" AND THE WAITING BEGINS By August, 2013, my office as President of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP) had come under permanent siege. "When is this money going to come? Or have they spent it like they do in Nigeria? Is this money real or a mirage? How long are we going to wait?", So many questions rained as producers became impatient. Many actually accused me of ineffective representation. "You are not pushing enough. Go to Abuja and bring our money. Tell those people the money is for Nollywood and not for government officials", they fired. This grant almost cost me my re-election as AMP President in January 2014. But with the inestimable wisdom of hindsight many of them are beginning to realise that the corrosive attack directed at my office was absolutely unnecessary as grants usually come with snail speed. Importantly this was despite the fact that application for capacity Building Fund had opened. But I understood their plight and aggressive quest for the grant. With their own meagre resources, they seem to have reached the limit of possibilities. Nollywood therefore needed this splendour of Aso Rock generosity and hospitality, even if a drop in the ocean, to re-oil the wheel of their checquered professional journey. Here was an industry they created with sheer grit and granite will, an industry that has changed Nigeria's story and image abroad; yet an industry that past leaders have paid only scant attention and lip service. Only President Jonathan has turned his promise into possibilities and these practitioners do not want to hear stories about this grant. And, as long as they have not seen the money in the vaults of their banks, as long as this grant remains something of a mystery, they needed to keep the pressure, if nothing else, to crack the carapace of the fund managers' conscience. That way, they believe, the grant managers would understand the crucible they have been through to create an industry that now seems to offer its viewers laughter and pleasure at the expense of these oracles of zest – the content creators. ON- LINE APPLICATION AND THE UPROAR THAT FOLLOWED The month of July 2013 heralded the arrival of 'Jonathan's money', in Nollywood's lingo. The N300 million earmarked for Capacity Building was ready. Nollywood could now apply online for the fund and it was open till the end of December 2013. By February, 2014, the N700 million fund for Film Production was also ready and open for application. This, ordinarily, should speak joy to Nollywood's ears and minds. But this was not to be. The forms especially that for Film Production, was complex, complicated and intricate. Here was a people that their whole life is governed by caprice and their trade by whim. Now they had to cope with this acidic test of dealing meticulously with forms. It was a tedious examination for many a practitioner. Some had to hire consultants to overleap this intellectual and indeed highbrow hurdle. Not even a seminar held by the fund managers on the filling of the forms could bring any succour. But the worst crisis came with submission of the applications. Apart from the acknowledgement of successful submission of the first phase of the application, which is in fact an automatic response from a programmed computer, many did not receive the form for the second phase which is like the semi-final round to the fund acquisition. There was uproar. As the AMP president, my office was once again besieged by producers. They want to know why the Project Act Nollywood managers had failed to reach them. They wanted me to reach Dr. Supo Olusi, Special Adviser to the Honourable Minister of Finance and the man saddled with the responsibility of dealing with Nollywood on this much awaited fund and issues arising from it. Sadly, no one could reach Dr. Olusi. None had his phone number except one of the guilds' heads. But he was hoarding this 'all important' number. In response to my request to get this number he seemed to have 'colonised', he told me he needed the man's approval and later called to say Dr. Olusi would call me. He never did. Many started wondering whether Project Act Nollywood had become a mystique that only the initiates could access. I finally reached through phone a lady in Dr Olusi's office who explained that some of the forms were not properly filled while some had clear errors. She still wouldn't give me Olusi's number. I couldn't spare her a bit of my caustic tongue. But it had also become clear to me that equipment failures in their office must have complicated the problems. For instance, some forms duly filled and sent to their office online got there with some sections blank. Twice this writer had to correct his own form and that became a testament to the failures of equipment in some cases. But more problems kept springing up and it was becoming a horrendous challenge. Since we could not reach Olusi on phone, we decided to take our problem to his office. A kind member of my association was, however, able to finally, and to our infinite joy, obtain Olusi's number from an Abuja based friend and gave it to us. We, at long last, reached the seemingly elusive Olusi on phone and most surprisingly he gave us an appointment without any qualms. THE ABUJA MEETING I arrived the Ministry of Finance with a strong lawyer, Barrister Sam Kargbo, who is also a member of my association. The Dr Olusi we met, again to our utmost surprise, came across a delightful character, hospitable, business-like, no fuss, no semantics, his language within the precincts of civility, devoid of unnecessary preambles. He gave us his call card with his phone numbers without any hesitation. In fact, he was only a surprise because there was nothing surprising about him. We then brought the uproar in Nollywood to his attention. The complicated film-fund form and the awaited fund for Capacity Building. Specifically, we told him of the many practitioners that have been given admissions in US Universities for three weeks intensive training but are yet to receive funds from Project Act Nollywood. We also stressed in crystal language Nollywood practitioners' determination to get the N10 million Film production fund. Having told him about Nollywood practitioners' rough and tough road to creating an industry, we made it known to him that this money, to some, "is not a matter of life and death. It is more than that". Dr Olusi was precise though with some understanding. Having explained that they were working assiduously on the applications and trying to correct the errors and mistakes from Nollywood and perhaps his office, he shocked us with the news that the N300 million set aside for capacity building had been exhausted. We sat mouth agape. With all the guilds in Nollywood, only the Directors Guild, about 28 of them, had been sent to the US for training and each had a total of US$6000 for tuition, ticket, accommodation and welfare. So, where has all the money gone to? What happens to all the members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, the largest guild in Nollywood? What will be the fate of over 60 producers who have been given admission for their training and many more still waiting? What about the editors, the cinematographers? Dr. Olusi was not about to answer the salient questions that cascaded our heat oppressed mind. His words were concise. "We are going to publish how your money was spent. The money is for Nollywood and we will spend it only on Nollywood practitioners and projects". His words spoken with granite cast conviction and confidence sounded to us more like sophistry and poetics of pseudo tradition, that made our ears tingle. He then told us that he had advised that since we are very passionate about the capacity building, we should apply for additional fund to be injected into that segment of the project from the budget for distribution. It was an advice that Nollywood easily bought. All the guilds' heads have since jointly written to the Minister of Culture and Tourism on this development as directed. And so the waiting game, like their histrionics calling, is once again being acted out even as I write this piece. Phone calls continued to come and the same questions again and again – where is the money? Some asked if the directors' trip to USA was a mere facade. What exactly is holding the money? AT LAST, THE FILM PRODUCTION FUND! On the cloudy evening of Friday, July 4, I received a call from our National Financial Secretary. "Presido, she said excitedly, the money don land o!". What do you mean, I quarried amidst laughter. Chinasa Joy Onyechere, our ever buoyant and sprightly Fin Sec then told me that some of our members had just received mails inviting them to come physically for an interview on the Film Production Fund. This is the final stage. Once you appear and successfully defend the form you filled, then you are in business. The 'Jonathan cash', 'GEJ's largesse', whatever you call it will be yours. The ball is now in everyone's court. It has been one long dizzying walk to a place called hope. This grant does not hold a financial revolution for Nollywood, but it could rev the sound of change and begin the reconstruction of a promise, the journey of history that Nollywood encapsulates. And that is why President Jonathan will have a hallowed place when the story of Nollywood is told. It is that uncommon tale of silent mystery; a story of an industry, started by ordinary people for ordinary Nigerians; but an industry that is today not only an African pride but a stunning subject matter the world over. The President has made the very first audacious move, ever, by a Nigerian leader to give Nollywood a nudge up the ladder of hope. We urge our trusted ally, Dr Okonjo-Iweala therefore to assure the success and survival of this initiative even as we believe that she, with the President's support, could do more for this authentic Nigerian brand- Nollywood! Watch the Incredible moment when a 'dead' 3 year old girl wakes up at her own funeral! [VIDEO] Posted: 14 Jul 2014 06:25 AM PDT A cellphone video has captured the incredible moment a 3-yr old girl woke up during preparations for her own funeral in a church in Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur, in the Philippines. The girl had been declared dead by doctors at a local hospital on Friday July 11th after being taken there the day before suffering from a fever for several days.  SCROLL DOWN FOR THE VIDEO  Her parents took her to the church the next day, with family and friends gathered for the burial when the unthinkable happened. It was only when one of her parents' neighbours removed the lid of the coffin to arrange the girl's remains that she saw the little girl's head move. Lagos State Govt issues alert on Ebola virus, gives precautionary tips! [Photo] Posted: 14 Jul 2014 06:31 AM PDT The Lagos state government has issued an alert on the deadly Ebola virus currently sweeping through some West African countries. The government in a statement signed by the state's Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, issued the alert as a precautionary measure to forestall the outbreak of the virus in the state. Countries like Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea have recorded a number of cases of the disease. The statement reads in part below; "Ebola virus ds caused by the Ebola virus and outbreaks occur primarily in villages of the Central and West Africa. The virus can be spread through, close contact with the blood, body fluids, organ and tissues of infected animals; direct contact with blood, organ or body secretions of an infected person. The transmission of the virus by other animals like monkey and chimpanzee cannot be ruled out. Early symptoms of disease include fever, headache, chills, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, backache, and joint pains. Later symptoms include bleeding from the eyes, ears and nose, bleeding from the mouth and rectum, eye swelling, swelling of the genitals and rashes all over the body that often contain blood. It could progress to coma, shock and death." The commissioner said individuals that are of high risk of getting infected are health workers, families or friends of an infected person who could be infected in the course of feeding, holding and caring for them. He gave measures to avoid being infected to include; washing of hands often with soap and water, avoiding close contact with people who are sick and ensuring that objects used by the sick are decontaminated and properly disposed. He also advised that any suspected case should be immediately reported to the state's Ministry of Health or any Local Government.
