An Abuja resident who had a friend as an eyewitness at the scene of the EMAB Plaza bomb blast narrated her account of the fatal explosions on Twitter. Tweeting from the handle @LuchyLuccious, she explained that there were several fortunate incidents that meant that less people lost their lives. She said;

"The bomb blast was from a Red Volkswagen Golf. Driver and passenger parked between Banex and Emab, ran out and moments later, explosion occurred.
"Met this guy that helped pack bodies. According to him the car with the bomb couldn't get into the plaza, because a learner blocked the entrance of the plaza. The driver of the said vehicle parked at the exit and took off in a waiting power bike."

World Vitiligo Day - Enam Haikeens is Face of Vitiligo Support and Awareness Foundation

Posted: 25 Jun 2014 03:05 PM PDT

Today is World Vitiligo Day, the global campaign to raise awareness and prevent stigma against this skin disease. In the run-up to the date, one of the premier activists in Nigeria, Ogo Maduewesi, put up several events to commemorate the day.

First, VITSAF (Vitiligo Support and Awareness Foundation), the NGO founded by Ogo Maduewesi produced and distributed a print and online campaign with Enam Heikeens as their ambassador and spokesperson. Enam Heikeens is a model and has taken part in beauty pageants.

Also, the group also organized a charity walk in Enugu to raise awareness about Vitiligo. The color for this years World Vitiligo day is purple and the theme is Black or White.

Also, there was the re-launch of a Ogo's fashion label called Vogo Designs. Vogo Designs specialises in casual dresses and bags cut and sewn from local Nigerian fabrics. According to Wakabout Blog, Pelu Awofeso who was at the event said,

"An even more remarkable activity was that the new collections were modelled exclusively by individuals who have vitiligo in various degrees and the star of the evening was Ghanaian born Enam Heikeens. When they eventually got on the runway, the guests were ecstatic and the mood in the room brightened up several notches."

PS - Ogo Maduewesi was pictured in the CNN feature article on World Vitiligo Day. She is in a slideshow of artist Stephanie Corne's portraits of people with vitiligo who attended the 2013 World Vitiligo Day conference in Detroit.

UPDATE - The EMAB Shopping Plaza Explosion Killed At Least 21 People, Injured 17 Others

Posted: 25 Jun 2014 02:05 PM PDT

The explosion that hit the busy EMAB shopping mall in Abuja, Nigeria, killed at least 21 people and injured 17 others. Police spokesman Frank Mba confirmed the number of casualties but said he could not provide details of the nature or extent of the damage.

"After a preliminary investigation we can confirm that 21 people were killed and 17 injured. Our most important assignment now is to secure lives, secure the crime scene and actually carry out preliminary investigations."

It is not yet clear what or who was behind the explosion, but it is well known that Islamist militant group Boko Haram has been bombing targets across northern Nigeria in recent days. Eye witnesses at the scene described seeing body parts scattered across the area, and are still shocked at the incident. Some spoke to the BBC.

Chiamaka Oham, who was near the site of the blast, told the BBC: "We heard a really loud noise and the building shook, and people started screaming and running out.

"We saw the smoke and people covered in blood. It was just chaos."

One man told the BBC his driver was killed in the blast:

"I was in the complex when I saw that the ground was shaking. I saw my driver dead and a lot of casualties."

The BBC's Hausa service editor Mansur Liman reports that the area was packed with shoppers at the time of the blast, while many cars outside the shopping complex were burnt out and many windows were shattered.

May the souls of those dead rest in peace.

Collette Moreno Killed In Car Crash After Taking Selfie on The Way To Her Bachelorette Party

Posted: 25 Jun 2014 01:17 PM PDT

A 26-year-old bride-to-be, Collette Moreno, took this selfie of herself and her friend on the way to her bachelorette party and minutes later she was killed in a car accident.

Collette Moreno and Ashley Theobald, both 26, had been happily listening to Taylor Swift when they got stuck behind trucks belching fumes. Theobald, who was driving, said she tried to overtake the car ahead because Collette started having a coughing fit.

"She has really bad asthma and there were a few trucks in front of us that had really bad exhausts and she was coughing, so I was like, 'OK, we have to pass these."

Theobald tried to pass on the two-lane highway, but a 25-year-old man in a 1999 Dodge Ram pickup was heading the other way as they topped a hill. The two drivers tried to swerve out of each other's way, but the truck still ended up hitting the passenger side of the women's car, sending it off the left side of the road.

The pickup driver was not seriously injured in the crash. Theobald was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

But Moreno, who was wearing her seat belt, was taken to a Columbia hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Theobald, her friend since 7th Grade was shocked at the news;

"I was talking to her. She couldn't talk back but she was nodding at me. I didn't know it was as bad as it was, because she wasn't physically super beaten-up."

As soon as Moreno's fiancé, Jesse Arcobasso, 28, found out about the accident, he jumped into his car and drove to the hospital.

"I was just trying to hold onto the fact that she was going to be OK."

Moreno's fiancé has now lost his wife-to-be just four weeks before their wedding. The two were supposed to be married July 26 in Jamaica. She leaves behind a 5-year-old son.

Moreno's mother recalled hearing the tragic news.

"Complete shock. It wasn't real. It felt like a messed-up dream and I needed to wake up."

Jesse says of how Moreno's five-year-old son Braden is coping with the tragedy.
"He doesn't quite understand everything just yet. I know it's going to take time."

Friends and family have now set up a fundraising page, to help cover the costs of getting her family to Kansas for the funeral.

Nigeria's Super Eagles Qualify For The Next Round At The World Cup

Posted: 25 Jun 2014 12:18 PM PDT

The Super Eagles, Nigeria's national team at the ongoing world cup in Brazil have just qualified for the next stage of the Mundial. Though the team lost their last match with Argentina, with 3 goals to 2, they have qualified to the knock-out stages as runners up in Group F. They are now the first African team to make it to the Round of 16.

And it is all thanks to Vincent Enyeama, who faced a flurry of shots on goal by Argentina striker Lionel Messi. There was also Ahmed Musa to equalize two of those goals that did get in, racking in some points the Super Eagles really needed to make it through.

Congrats to the Eagles and congrats to Nigeria.

Check out pictures below of Super Eagles supporters in Brazil, Nigeria, and around the world, celebrating the team.

[Photos] Bomb Blast Hits Abuja Shopping Malls - EMAB and BANEX Plaza

Bomb Blast in Abuja

Up to 5 people are feared dead as explosions hit the two most popular shopping malls in Abuja. EMAB and Banex Plaza situated side by side in Wuse 2, are the commercial nerve center of the city and host hundred of shops and thousands of people pass through them daily. I lived in Abuja for several years and it is scary how many times I went there, especially after I became a bank officer.

A Vanguard reporter on the scene said,

"I can see human parts and some bodies scattered on the ground but we are too scared to get closer for fear of another bomb. Many traders and visitors to the mall are still trapped in the burning building."

Manzo Ezekiel, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, told AFP news agency: "You can see smoke billowing from the sky. It's a very crowded place."

R Kelly Says of Jaya Kelly "Don't Call Her My Son" - 14 Year Old Daughter is Transitioning to Male

Posted: 25 Jun 2014 09:32 AM PDT

R Kelly youngest daughter with ex-wife, Andrea Kelly, came out as Tranguy [female to male] at the beginning of the month. The 14 year old Jaya Kelly now goes by the name Jay and revealed that he has identified as male since he was 7 years old.

In an AMA on AskFm, Jay admitted that her father has only just found out about the transition and has not spoken to her since. However, his mother, Drea Kelly and sister have known for a while and are very supportive [read here].

R Kelly has finally addressed the issue of his daughter, Jaya's transition to male when during an interview this week, he was asked about it. R.Kelly immediately told the reporter not to refer to Jaya as his son.

"Well, first off don't start by calling her my son. As far as that's concerned, always believe what you see - with your own eyes that is. That's the best way to go about this business. I've heard a lot of things about a lot of people and it was never true."

It is clear that R Kelly is having difficulty coming to terms with his child's transition, and looking at the picture above, it is not hard to see how hard it can be. I doubt it is an easy process for any parent to deal with such gender changes in their young children.

Jay's mother has obviously had a longer time to get used to her daughter turning into her son, but at least it has happened before her eyes.

I hope with time R Kelly and Jay are able to come to a more amicable relationship.

Michelle Duggar Gives Marriage Advice That Will Benefit Everyone

Posted: 25 Jun 2014 09:31 AM PDT

Michelle Duggar is the mother of 19 children and has been married to her husband, Jim Bob Duggar for over 30 years.

Not everyone may have as many children as she does, but everyone, male and female, married and single can benefit from the advice that comes from her wealth of experience.

Two days before her daughter's marriage, she answered a question from a "19 Kids and Counting" fan: What advice will you give Jill as a newlywed wife to keep in mind throughout her marriage? on her blog.

1. Be available

First, I'm going to pass on the advice that was given to me by a dear friend Gala. Whenever I speak with groups of other moms and married women, I always share this advice. It's been the best advice that was ever given to me in regard to my relationship to my husband Jim Bob.

Gala had only been married for three years, but she had very wise advice. I was about six months out from getting married, and was just all bleary eyed and in love. I couldn't wait to be married and be called "Mrs. Jim Bob Duggar." That was the dream of my life.

She told me: "Michelle, I know you're so excited. You're a bride-to-be, but some day you'll be at this point. I've been married three years and I'm still happily married. I have one child, we're expecting our second and I'm big pregnant. You've got to remember this. Anyone can iron Jim Bob's shirt, anybody can make lunch for him. He can get his lunch somewhere else. But you are the only one who can meet that special need that he has in his life for intimacy. You're it. You're the only one. So don't forget that, that he needs you. So when you are exhausted at the end of the day, maybe from dealing with little ones, and you fall into bed so exhausted at night, don't forget about him because you and he are the only ones who can have that time together. No one else in the world can meet that need."

"And so be available, and not just available, but be joyfully available for him. Smile and be willing to say, 'Yes, sweetie I am here for you,' no matter what, even though you may be exhausted and big pregnant and you may not feel like he feels. 'I'm still here for you and I'm going to meet that need because I know it's a need for you.' "

I've realized the sweetness of that through the years. While I am always joyfully available for him, in turn, he'll lay down his life in any way. He will sit there and listen to everything I need to tell him because he knows that I'm there for him, too. I'm meeting his needs, he's meeting my needs. We're willing to be there for each other. And each one of us has different needs in a marriage relationship and that's what's so precious. I'll share this advice with Jill so she knows that she's got to be a wife first and then later, Lord willing, she'll be a mother. Her responsibility before God and Derick needs to come first. It's not just me and the Lord; it's me and the Lord and my husband.

2. Talk about disagreements privately

Another piece of advice, I'll tell Jill – don't ever talk about things in front of your children that are supposed to be between you and your husband only. Step aside and say we're going to talk about this privately. And don't ever put your husband down in front of your children or other people, especially your families. Talk privately. We always say in our family, we praise publicly, but we correct privately. And that's marriage advice that I would give to anyone.

3. Get marriage advice when you need it

There are going to be those times in your marriage where you might not always agree; you might not see things eye to eye and sometimes you may need a trusted third party to be a counsel for you in your marriage. Feel free to go to that trusted wise counsel that you both respect and get counsel when you need it. We have all been there. Yes, we have a oneness with spirit in Christ, but there are times that we need others to give us life counsel. So be willing to go seek it together.

It's important to note that you can get marriage counseling in a lot of different ways. Your friends are very quick to offer advice, but it might not always be the wise advice you need to hear. Another option is to listen to to messages from scriptural teachers together. Through the years as we have gone to marriage retreats, Jim Bob and I have tried to take time out as a couple to listen to messages from other couples that have either learned from their mistakes or from others with the Christian perspective that we share. Even if you can't afford to get away for the weekend, that's fine. In our early days, we'd often plan a romantic dinner and listen to readings together and have grandma babysit. It would strengthen our relationship.

Jim Bob and I say we have the best love life ever because we're so experienced now, but we are also still learning about each other and it's just great. I've gone back and reread some books that were helpful to me and I'm writing out notes to share with Jill. I'll be giving her a little bridal package that has lots of things that she'll need for the honeymoon. Jill is very understanding of a lot of things because she's a midwife and she's helped a lot of mothers. But there are still a lot of things that I want to share with her before her wedding night. For me, it's a whole different perspective because I'm sharing this information with my daughter.

And even fellows need a lot of help! These guys need to know they can't go into this thinking they're all macho. They need to get their knowledge from the right perspective to go into things with the right ideas.

15 Reasons To Give That Older Man A Chance At Your Love

Posted: 25 Jun 2014 09:31 AM PDT

A mature man is more than just a robust bank balance. He'll be empathetic, wise and secure in himself – at least in theory. He might have a few grey hairs, but they'll just lend him an air of Clooney-like sophistication. If you're tired of dating men who bring out your mothering side, here are our reasons to try someone a little more mature.

1. He'll make you feel young. However many candles are on your birthday cake, the older man will always think of you as being youthful.

2. Older guys have more to talk about. Those extra few years of life experience make all the difference during potentially awkward first dates.

3. He has his own place. You're definitely less likely to find an older man who's still shacking up with his parents or his mates. If you appreciate time alone, an older guy could be a great option.

4. He's not going to change. A younger man may change as time goes by and you could grow apart, but if the older man you've met has a lust for life despite his age then time certainly isn't slowing him down.

5. He knows where he's going in life. An older man has direction, unlike his younger counterparts who may flit from one career to another – or worse still, flit from being gainfully employed to asking to borrow money.

6. As men age they become less obsessed by appearance. Experience will have taught them that a superficial sheen doesn't really count for much when finding that perfect someone. Looks fade, but personalities don't.

7. An older man will be at the right level of maturity. A study commissioned by Nickelodeon UK found that men remain 'immature' well into their early 40s, while women mature at an average age of 32.

8. Less jealousy. Forget about dating insecure guys who are worried you're going to leave them for someone new. The older man is confident in himself and why you chose him.

9. Meeting the parents is easy with an older man. He'll have plenty in common with them – perhaps too much. Beat a hasty retreat if they start reminiscing about how much cheaper things were back in the day.

10. He's well mannered. Old school manners to go with an old school kinda guy. If you're interested in finding someone who'll hold the door open for you or pull your chair out, the older gentleman could be the one for you!

11. Men get more attractive as they age. Okay, so hair loss and beer-bellies aside, people often say that men are like good wine – getting better with age. Not only that, but many older men are ready to settle down. If you're looking for something serious, an older guy really is an attractive choice.

12. Regular partying not really your thing? Chances are the older man won't be banging on about his drunken nights out and the sordid activities of all his friends.

13. An older man will expect you to have lived. This isn't a requirement for you to have scaled Everest or solved Fermat's Last Theorem. It means instead that he won't balk if you've been through some tough times. He probably has too.

14. He's experienced in the bedroom. Time, practice and knowledge all make for a great love making experience – he's had time to perfect his techniques!

15. He's well-read. Okay, it's a smallish point. But when it comes to a little down-time, the older man has had a lifetime worth of great movies, books and music to listen to. Maybe he can introduce you to something you've never heard of before!

Have you tried dating an older man? Was the age difference an issue?

Survey Proves That Christians are Not Saints, They Cheat Too

Posted: 25 Jun 2014 05:03 AM PDT

People that think just because someone is a born again Christian he or she has a new, and somewhat elevated, set of moral standards are in for a big surprise.

Ashley Madison is a website that exists to help people cheat. Their clientele come to them because they want to have an affair – since they are married or are looking for other married people to cheat with. The site isn't bashful about the service that they offer, either: "Ashley Madison is the most recognized and reputable married dating company" – although "married dating" does seem like an oxymoron.

Recently, in order to find out the link between religion and infidelity the site asked its members across the world what their religious affiliation was. Of the 105,000 participants in the survey, 60,000 of them were from the United States.

The results were surprising. A quarter of the members who responded to the survey said that they were "born again" Evangelist Christians and they were at the top of the list. Catholics came in second at just above 20 percent. The second runner ups were the Protestants who made up almost the same figure as the Catholics.

For those that thought that people that appeared to have a strong religious conviction were less likely to cheat, this survey has come as an eye-opener.

"People who have faith often use it as an outlet for forgiveness" said Dr. Eric Anderson, a sociologist at the University of Winchester in England, "so they're more likely to cheat and less likely to feel guilty."

Meaning the more faith a person had, the higher the chance of their cheating as they believed in forgiveness – a point also proven by the fact that Atheist only made up 1.4 percent of the cheaters.

The results of the survey:

Evangelist 25.1%
Catholic 22.75%
Protestant 22.7%
Agnostic 2%
Mormon 1.6%
Muslim 1.5%
Jewish 1.4%
Atheist 1.4%
Jehovah's Witness 0.5%
Hindusim 0.3%

Note: the survey results aren't indicative of the general population but only of those that are members of Ashley Madison

Meriam Ibrahim and Family Finally Leave Sudan After Release From Airport Arrest

Posted: 25 Jun 2014 09:31 AM PDT

Meriam Ibrahim, the Sudanese woman who had been jailed and previously sentenced to death for Apostasy, is free and has finally left Sudan for an undisclosed country.

Meriam was freed from her conviction by the Appeals Courts which held the intial sentence void. However, when she tried to travel out of the country with her family, she was re-arrested at Khartoume airport.

Sudanese officials later said they didn't arrest Meriam, that she was only detained over a "travel document issue" that was discovered at the airport but she's since been released. They also confirmed that she and her family had boarded a flight out of Sudan today.

U.S. State Department during a briefing with reporters in Washington D.C today said Meriam is now free, safe and secure but didn't make it clear if she'd left Sudan for the U.S, where she's expected to seek political asylum.

Suya Eaters Advised to Eat Onions And Other Vegetables Along With the Grilled Meat

Posted: 25 Jun 2014 12:03 AM PDT

Tasty Suya and Tomatoes

Prof. Ignatius Onimawo, a food nutritionist has warned that that except there is deliberate effort to imbibe healthier dietary and lifestyle habits over the next 10 years, cancer and other Non Communicable Diseases, NCDs, will increase by more than 27 percent in developing countries like Nigeria, compared to 17 percent in the developed world.

Focusing especially on cancer, the prof remarked that studies to try to look at the aetiology of the disease, to find out where it all started, traced the incidence of cancer in Nigeria to suya consumption.

This he said was because "During preparation of suya, the  meat is cooked over an open fire, and oils from the meat undergo complex chemical reactions that produce toxins such as Heterocyclic Amines, HCAs that are carcinogenic (cancer-causing) in nature. The more well-done a meat is cooked, the higher concentration of carcinogenic HCA's can form."

As a way to prevent the formation of these HCAs, the nutritionist explained why it is important to eat the Suya with the necessary spices, onions and vegetables.

Explaining that cancer is due to  oxidative processes in the body, He said onions are powerful antioxidants  that  effectively stop the oxidative process triggerred by consumption of suya from  taking place.

Further, Onimawo said one of the outcomes of the findings was that women who consume suya, are more prone to cancer (breast cancer) than men because they (women) tend to consume just the suya and ignore the vegetables.

Men eat onions, women eat suya: "This is practically proven. Many young men, take girls out and buy suya to entertain them. Normally, apart from the spices sprinkled on the meat, the suya is served with slices of onions, cabbage and tomatoes in some cases.

"The onion and other vegetables are actually added to act as antidote to the effect of the oil from the suya. Onions neutralise the oxidative effect of the chemicals in the oil and help prevent cancer,  but because the young man wants to impress the girl, he will be eating the onions, while the girl eats the suya. At the end of the day he is preventing cancer, unknowingly, while the girl is eating the cancer.

"Much of this information needs to be made more available. I'm not saying suya is bad, on the contrary, it is a great delicacy, but beneficial only when eaten in moderation and along with the onion and cabbage, he stated."

A number  of  studies support the use of local spices such as ginger, clove, red pepper, black pepper, onion, thyme, oregano and garlic in a meat marinade before grilling also drastically reduce any carcinogens that normally would form on grilled meat.

The suya sauce, a.k.a. Yaji, comprising most of these spices is believed to help ameliorate possible negative effects of the roasted red meat.  However, findings link excessive consumption to  possible kidney damage.
When meat is cooked in a water base as opposed to grilling, HCAs are eliminated. Meat cooked in a soup or  pot will not have carcinogenic HCAs and is a healthier way to cook meat.
