Romance Meets Life

Romance Meets Life

Three Weeks in Nigeria and Just Catching My Breath

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 03:24 PM PST

I came to Nigeria for a project and I'll be here for till the New Year, all things being equal. After the mad rush of my first weeks, I'm finally beginning to breathe and get my bearings. I've spent most of this time in Lagos, and as if to punish me for not being a fan, the city has been dealing with me, mostly through light and traffic. Power is peripatetic to the worst degree, and the traffic na die!

These pictures were taken yesterday at a Creative Enterprise Expo I attended in Ikeja - it took us almost two hours to get there, a trip I had done at a previous day and time and without traffic in just over 30mins. But we got there, the event started late, and I had a great time.

Mo Abudu, Jason Njoku and Folarin of Tiffany Amber, as well as Amaka Igwe and Joke Silva among others, were speakers at the event, and I got the opportunity to make connections.

And that's maybe the thing about Nigeria for me. The infrastructure is poor compared to what I'm getting used to in the States, but I spent over 25 of the first years of my life here and can remember to how to deal. Moreso, in the seven years I've lived abroad, I've visited Nigeria five times and kept abreast of developments.

Most importantly, when I consider how easy it is for me to make high level connections here and the opportunities available to me, it is easy to close my eyes to most of the discomfort, and leave it to God, hehehe. Yes o, it's now clearer to me why many in Nigeria use religion and their pastor's words as safety blankets, this country will make you crazy quickly otherwise. LOL...

So, I'll be bringing you reports of what I've been doing since I arrived, the British Council Publishers Forum, the Lagos Book and Art Fair - LABAF, Ake Festival in Abeokuta, welcoming my new niece in Asaba, yes o, this lady is a first time Aunty and it feels good, and many more. Stay tuned and if you're in Lagos and want to meet up, shoot me an email.

Are You Still Rooting For Olivia Pope on Scandal?

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 10:04 AM PST

Since being in Nigeria, I've found myself being in the position of recommender of good movies and series coming out of the States. One of my favorite shows for the past couple of years has been Scandal and I have mentioned it to various people without going into details about the story line. To be honest though, while I still follow the show, I've kinda become jaded to the love story between Olivia and the president which started out as my favorite storyline.

My main attraction to the show these days is the mystery of Olivia Pope's fixing jobs, her parents and the president's past. Still I am in the minority. Millions of Scandal's fans are still going gaga over the love triangle of a married president with a mistress whom his wife knows about and horror of horrors, condones!

And the fact is that most of these fans are rooting for Olivia Pope, the mistress in the show. The actress who plays the role of the president's wife in Scandal was on the Wendy Williams Show [pictured above] and says of their storyline;

"I make of it, Shonda's genius. She started this story, sort of in a pinhole. And you were just looking at their love and their relationship. And you're like, 'Oh God, yes, I feel that. I feel that. I want that for them,' and then she slowly pulled back and you got the context. And you're like, 'Oh, oh, I'm pulling for adultery. Who does that make me? But her kind of storytelling, she lets the characters be so messy. It let's you examine you, because you find out what you pull for and who you pull for."

So my question is, who are you pulling for at this stage?

At this point, it must be obvious I'm team Mellie the wife - not because I'm married like some of my friends have argued, but because she seems to be the only one who knows what she wants and works to the the end to get it.

Short Story - Slack by Uche Peter Umez

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 04:06 AM PST

Chidera tried to push him away, but Mr. Nnamdi grabbed her by the waist.

'Sir, you're hurting me,' she cried, wishing she'd left the office much earlier.

His grip slackened. 'I'm sorry. But I've fallen for you – '

'No.' Chidera shook her head. Though surprised by the sob in his voice, she added, 'You are married, sir.'

'Have you ever been in love, Chidera? Do you know what it means to be married to someone you don't love?'

Chidera could only think of how her dad had left her mom for another woman.

'Let me be your slave,' Mr. Nnamdi whispered, going down on his knees briefly.

Chidera regarded him. Many female staff wouldn't mind undressing for him straightaway, but he was kneeling before her. She felt giddy, she felt more than a secretary.

'I'll make sure you never lack anything…'

As Mr. Nnamdi moved his lips closer, Chidera thought of her pastor condemning fornication and realised that she'd imagined this moment all along.

Magazine Covers - Michelle Obama For the Ladies Home Journal

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 02:03 AM PST

The American First Lady, Michelle Obama looks great on the December cover of the Ladies Home Journal where she talks about Christmas at the White House and how it compares with the festive season as a child. "Christmas has always been a special time in my household. Growing up, we lived in a little-bitty apartment, but my mom put her heart and soul into decorating that house," she reveals.

In addition to sharing personal family memories, the first lady dazzles in the photo shoot accompanying the piece in a golden brocade dress that shows off her lovely figure.

Doesn't she just look amazing?

Lupita Nyong’o - Promoting Twelve Years a Slave Transforms Actress to Fashion Icon

Posted: 26 Nov 2013 01:06 AM PST

Lupita Nyong'o is an upcoming Kenyan actress working internationally, and currently her acting skills, a solid education in film and red carpet fashion has made her one of the most high profile actresses this year. She recently starred as Patsey in "12 Years of Slave" opposite Chiwetel Ejiofor, an amazing performance that I won't be surprised if it garners her lots of nominations and awards.

I first saw Lupita in Shuga where she definitely dtood out, and since she graduated with a masters in fine arts from the Yale School of Drama, the sky is just the beginning for this 30-year-old. Following in the footsteps of actresses like Kerry Washington who has made the red carpet promotions work for her, Lupita in promoting 12 Years has avoided missteps, and has instead begun to grace covers like Vogue.

I look forward to seeing more of her in movies and also on magazine covers.

Ice Prince celebrated the launch of his Fire of Zamani (FOZ) album with a star-studded concert over the weekend. While performing the hit track, "Aboki" from the album, Ice Prince brought up his son Jamal to join him on stage. Poor toddler looks shy and tired, but it's certainly a sweet kodak moment.

Couple Love - Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel, Almost 30 Years Together and Still Going Strong

Goldie Hawn, star actress of the eighties and nineties and mother to actress Kate Hudson, has been with fellow actor Kurt Russell for almost thirty years. The couple avoided the Hollywood divorce curse by never getting married and it seems to have paid off for them. Above picture is Goldie and Kurt back in the eighties, below is them showing some PDA over the weekend.

On the BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour last year, Goldie says of what makes a successful partnership, "You don't always agree with your mate. You don't even like them sometimes. But there is something there that sparks you. You have to focus on that as you move on."

Goldie was also asked about the secret to her own happy long-term relationship, and she said, "You have to like the way each other smell. I think it's that the pheromones haven't gone away. The chemicals are still popping." She said she thinks Kurt's an extraordinary person, adding, "I love being with him and I love our family and I love our family life."

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have raised three children together - Wyatt, whom they had together, and two children from Goldie's second marriage - Kate and Oliver Hudson.

RML finds their love inspiring!
