Angelina Jolie says 'no shame' in being r*pe survivor!

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie said on Tuesday that a global summit to end s*xual violence in wars must send the message that there is "no disgrace" in being a r*pe survivor and that "the shame is on the aggressor". British Foreign Secretary William Hague said at the opening of the four-day conference in London that it was only a "weak or inadequate man" that abuses women - a statement that drew cheers from the crowd. The conference is the fruit of a two-year campaign by UN special envoy Ms Jolie and Mr Hague, who have visited the Democratic Republic of Congo and Bosnia to meet victims of r*pe during wars. In her opening remarks to the End S*xual Violence in Conflict summit, Ms Jolie said she and Mr Hague had met a woman in Bosnia who was still too ashamed to tell her son that she had been r*ped.

A French murderer who escaped from a Swiss prison this week, leaving a letter vowing to turn himself back in after taking a few days off, has kept his promise, the authorities said on Friday. The 38-year-old man, who had been serving part of a 15-year sentence for the brutal murder of a prostitute at a semi-open Geneva penal institution, sparked an international manhunt when he failed to return on Sunday after spending the day working outside the prison. In a letter addressed to his mother, he had explained that he needed four to five days of freedom and vowed to turn himself in once he had taken "some air". "I will behave while I'm on the lam," he promised in the letter, his lawyer told AFP. Keeping his promise, he walked back into the prison late on Thursday, the Geneva authorities said in a statement.

The immediate past governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, who visited the late NAFDAC DG in India last month, has spoken of the professor's wish for Nigeria before she passed on.
On behalf of the Akunyili's family, I wish to officially confirm the death of Prof. (Mrs.) Dora Nkem Akunyili, OFR, in a Specialist Cancer Hospital in India this morning at 10 am, Nigerian Time, after a two-year battle with cancer," he said in a statement released to the media by Isaac Umunna, Media Advisor to Dora Akunyili.

On behalf of the Akunyili's family, I wish to officially confirm the death of Prof. (Mrs.) Dora Nkem Akunyili, OFR, in a Specialist Cancer Hospital in India this morning at 10 am, Nigerian Time, after a two-year battle with cancer.In spite her illness, Prof. Akunyili was unwavering in her belief in a better Nigeria. That was why she defied her condition and was part of Anambra State Handover Committee and the National Conference.

The last time I visited her in India, even when she needed all the prayers herself, she was full of concern for the abducted Chibok girls, security and other challenges facing the country and told me that she remained prayerful for the release of those girls and for God to help President Goodluck Jonathan to overcome all the challenges facing the Nation. She therefore urged all Nigerians to remain prayerful and committed to building a better society for our children. We all prayed together and I promised to be visiting her every month.

We thank all those who remain fervent in prayers for her recovery and urge them to remain prayerful for the peaceful repose of her soul.

Boko Haram abducts 20 women near Chibok in Fresh Attack! –Reports!

Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram have reportedly abducted about 20 women near Chibok, the Borno State community where more than 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped on April 14.

The women, according to Bloomberg, a United States-based news agency, and The Guardian of London, were taken after the gunmen attacked a nomadic settlement known as Garkin Fulani at the weekend.

Bloomberg and The Guardian of London both quoted a member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, Alhaji Tar, as having said the women were herded into vehicles at gunpoint and driven off to an unknown location.

"We got the information that they went there and took away the women at the time none of the males were there," Tar said in the reports by the two news sources on Monday.

"The three young men they met there could not help the women, as they (gunmen) also ordered the three of them to enter the Toyota Hilux vans and took all of them away," Tar added.

The news channels also reported that three young men who tried to stop the abduction of the women were also taken away.

When contacted by one of our correspondents, the Borno State Police Commissioner, Lawan Tanko, denied that the incident took place.

He said, "I believe there is no truth in the attack as I just spoke to my divisional police officer in Chibok. He should have informed me of the abduction if there was any."

Also, the Chairman of Chibok Local Government Area, Baana Lawan, said, "When I saw the report on online new sources, I despatched some vigilance group members and hunters to the scene. They came back and told me that the place was never attacked and that no one was abducted."

Telephone calls by one of our correspondents in Abuja to the Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, were not picked by him. He also did not respond to a text message sent to him.

Before then, Olukolade had said Special Forces killed 50 Boko Haram insurgents on Saturday.

Olukolade, in an electronic mail on Monday, said the insurgents were ambushed by troops at Bilta following intelligence reports that they were going to attack some communities in Borno and Adamawa states.

He added that four soldiers who received gunshot wounds in the encounter were receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

The DHQ spokesman stated that the troops also seized "30 rifles, 36 hand grenades, seven machine guns, 11 rocket propelled grenade tubes, 3500 rounds of ammunition, six smoke grenade canisters, locally-fabricated guns and four vehicles used by the terrorists in the foiled attack."

He said, "Troops conducting anti-terrorist campaign in the North-East have successfully averted attempted massive raid on villages in Borno and Adamawa states during the weekend.

"The terrorists who were on their way to attack selected communities were ambushed by troops at Bilta, Borno State on receiving intelligence report of the terrorists' intention.

"The attack was launched on the terrorists as they filed out of the forest to embark on their mission at about 10pm on Saturday.

"Over 50 terrorists died in the fierce encounter that ensued. The four soldiers who were wounded in the operation are currently receiving medical treatment in the military medical facility."

Meanwhile, the people of Attagara, Aganjara and Agapalwa in Borno State have buried over 100 bodies almost a week after Boko Haram attacks.

Local leaders, Lawan Abba Kaka and John Gulla, told The Guardian of London on Monday, that many more victims of the last Tuesday and Wednesday attacks had yet to be found.

Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South in the senate, gave the breakdown of burials as 42 in Attagara; 24 in Aganjara and 20 in Agapalwa.

"From what those who fled told us, there are more corpses in nearby bushes and the mountain side," he told reporters after a meeting in Maiduguri.

"Many people that fled the communities are also trapped on the hills, as they are without food or water," Ndume added.

The United Nations has however expressed fears that half of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls might return home pregnant.

It raised the alarm during a luncheon in New York as part of the preparation for the June 10 global summit in London on sexual violence in conflict last Friday.

The UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Zainab Bangura, said, "My worry is that half of those girls don't come back home pregnant.''

She urged the international community to prepare the minds of the pupils' families for their return and make available psychological and other support for the girls.

She said before the kidnap of the Chibok girls drew global attention, more than 2,000 girls had been abducted worldwide.

The UN representative was meeting with editors and the British ambassador to the United States in preparation for a first-time global summit on sexual violence in conflict which will hold in London between Tuesday( today) and Friday.

William Hague, the UK Foreign Secretary and Angelina Jolie, Special Envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, are co-chairing the summit.

How to rescue the Chibok schoolgirls and provide them with needed support are expected to be an intense discussion at the summit.

The Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, was locked inside the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on Sunday for an undisclosed number of minutes after his chartered aircraft was grounded by the airport authorities.

The State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, who spoke on Amaechi's behalf, while briefing newsmen on Monday, said all the gates leading into and out of the airport were locked apparently to prevent the take-off or landing of any aircraft.

Semenitari expressed surprise that the gates could be locked when it was clear that Amaechi was still in the aircraft.

She explained that the padlocks to the gates had to be broken to allow Amaechi, who was in company with the former Governor of Gombe State, Senator Danjuma Goje and Alhaji Kawu Baraje go out of the airport.

The commissioner added that Amaechi was denied take-off from the Aminu Kano Airport by a man identified as Commandant, who insisted that the order was from above.

Amaechi, according to her, was forced to travel by road from Kano to Port Harcourt after the aircraft was grounded.

"Yesterday, my counterpart in Kano told me that the people at the airport said they were directed not to allow all non-scheduled aircrafts to take off or land. So, while the governor was there, I am also told, they began to lock all the gates to the exit of the airport and they locked the gates with the governor inside the aircraft.

"For the governor to exit the airport, somebody had to break the padlock of the gate. So, the governor and his team could leave. That amounts to imprisonment without charge.

"I got the Kano State Commissioner for State Affairs, who briefed me and told me that the chartered aircraft that conveyed the governor to Kano, was denied take-off from Aminu Kano International Airport by a fellow identified as the Commandant, acting on orders from above.

"That was the only information he (Kano State Commissioner for State Affiars) was willing to share when the governor enquired about what offence he and the aircraft operators had committed. With the governor was Alhaji Kawu Baraje as well as Senator Danjuma Goje, a former governor of Gombe State," Semenitari added.

She pointed out that the ordeal of the state governor, Amaechi, did not portend well for the nation's democracy.

Describing the incident at the Kano Airport as an 'imprisonment' of the governor, Semenitari, said the development was a wrong signal ahead of the 2015 general elections.

"More seriously is the fact that this does not portend well for our democracy. It does not portend well for us as we enter into the next election. A situation where newspapers are seized is the beginning of stifling Nigerians," she stressed.

Amaechi had gone to condole with the Kano State Governor on the demise of the immediate past Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

A Maryland father will not be facing charges after hitting one of his daughter's teachers with a baseball bat after the teacher refused to leave the family's home following a texting scandal.

Authorities are not releasing the names of the girl, her parents or the teacher.

Police were initially contacted by the teen's mother after she became aware of hundreds of texts, described by Baltimore County Police as documenting " an emotional relationship that seemed inappropriate for a teacher and student," between the 15-year-old girl and the 42-year-old teacher.

Police determined that no crime had been committed and referred the case to the Crimes Against Children Unit for further investigation.

"There's nothing we've seen in the contents that's criminal," Baltimore County police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said in regard to the texts .

According to newsnet5, the teacher showed up uninvited at the home of the girl Thursday morning wishing to speak with her father. The exchange ended when the father hit the teacher with a baseball bat.

"The girl's father told the teacher to leave, but the teacher refused," Baltimore County Police department reported. "The girl's father then struck the teacher with a baseball bat."

According to police the teacher sustained minor injuries but chose to not file second-degree assault charges.

The father could still press trespassing charges, police said.

According to a press release by the military yesterday, over 50 terrorists were killed in Borno.The terrorists who were on their way to attack selected communities were ambushed by troops along Bilta, Borno state on receiving intelligence report of the terrorists' intention.

The attack was launched on the terrorists as they filed out of the forest to embark on their mission at about 10pm on Saturday. Over 50 terrorists died in the fierce encounter that ensued, while 30 rifles, 36 Hand Grenades, 7 Machine guns and 11 Rocket Propelled grenade tubes were captured by the troops. Also recovered from the terrorists were over 3,500 rounds of ammunition, 6 smoke grenade canisters and locally fabricated guns as well as 4 vehicles used by the terrorists in the foiled attack.

A 45-year-old native doctor, Jamiu Alao, was on Monday charged with defrauding two men of N21.1 million and attempted murder at an Igbosere Magistrates' Court, Lagos.

Mr. Alao, who lives at Ijebu-Ode, Ogun, is facing charges of conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretences and attempted murder.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

But the prosecutor, Innocent Odugbo, told the court that Mr. Alao committed the offences with others still at large sometime in April at Mayfair Estate, Ajah in Lekki.

He said the native doctor collected N3million from one Raimi Oluwaseyi under the guise of giving him spiritual protection.

The prosecutor said the accused had on April 8 at Ijabi Quarters, Ijebu-Ode, also collected $116,000 (N19.1million) from Mr. Oluwaseyi and one David Orji on the pretext of protecting them spiritually.

"The native doctor gave the complainants a substance to drink for spiritual protection and directed that it should be consumed at a residence in Lagos.

"Orji and Oluwaseyi drank the substance which turned out to be an acid," Mr. Odugbo said.

According to Odugbo, the complainants had to travel abroad to seek urgent medical attention for internal injuries they received.

He said the offences contravened Sections 228(2), 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 228 (2) recommends life imprisonment for attempted murder.

The Magistrate granted the native doctor bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned to June 30 for mention.

The man had gone to the hospital on June 5th but kicked the bucket the following day.

She Wrote SSCE Four Times! She Is The Best Graduating Student In Babcock (Photo)

19-year-old best graduating student of the Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, Daniella Uzoamaka, speaks on her rough road to success, Punch's Charles Abah writes.

"Looking at a king's mouth, one would think he never sucked at his mother's breast," is a famous proverbs the late literary giant, Chinua Achebe, used in his award-winning novel, Things Fall Apart.

The maxim suggests that when one is admiring the success of an accomplished man, there is the temptation to think that he never experienced any difficulties or hard times in life.

The story of 19-year-old Uzoamaka Daniella, the 2014 best graduating student of the Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, underscores this adage...

The Public Administration first class graduate obtained a Cumulative Grade Point Average 4.86 out of 5.00 to emerge as the school valedictorian. With this accomplishment, she received the academic, leadership, community and spiritual awards during the university's 12th convocation held on June 1, 2014.

Some of the honours she received are the President's Award, Senior Vice-President Prize, the Dean, Business School Award and the Academic Programme award in Public Administration.

Looking at her academic record at the university, one would think that her road to success was tiled with gold through and through or that she was never associated with any manner of scholarly disappointment. This view is, however, far from reality.

In fact, before the harvest of scholastic successes, the youngster had witnessed some rough edges of academic frustration. Particularly, at her primary and secondary school levels, she was not just an average pupil, she also experienced unpleasant academic moments. For instance, she wrote the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination conducted by the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council four times.

She notes with a touch of simplicity in her voice, "I have a piece of information for you. Do you know that I wrote the SSCE on four different occasions? The first was the private candidate November/December WASSCE; then my WAEC, NECO and another Nov/Dec examination. I did these examinations then because I had problem with Mathematics.

"You see, I realised at an early stage in my academic pursuit that examination malpractice is not a road to success. The farthest I can remember engaging in any examination malpractice was in my Junior Secondary School 1 class. Further, during my WAEC preparation, I was encouraged by the words of my school principal, Mrs. Oloriade, that it is better to fail honourably than to cheat. These words helped me to keep tight to my integrity in my exams."

But what spurred her to continue with her education in spite of this initial hiccup? The Orlu, Imo State-born native, who attended Wellspring College, Omole Phase Two, Ikeja, Lagos, linked it to her twin sister, Gabriella. According to the lass, the academic excellence her sister recorded in school was her huge source of inspiration.

"I attended Bernice and Dominican Nursery and Primary School, Oshodi, Lagos. I was not academically fantastic then, but I was responsible and mature. This resulted in my being made the school head girl. I was an average student in my Junior Secondary School class but as I went further into the senior class, I drew a lot of inspiration from the academic excellence of my twin sister, Gabriella. She made me to put in more efforts and I thus studied for more hours."

Interestingly, Gabriella, who studied Industrial Chemistry at the Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, also obtained a first class. Her convocation holds on June 27, 2014.

On the secret of her success in the university, Daniella notes that a challenge from one of her male colleagues on campus further propelled her to seek greater academic glory.

She adds, "A particular event occurred in my first year that kept me on my toes throughout my stay in the university. After the first semester result was released, a guy walked up to me and bluntly told me that I was not going to graduate with a first class. I was frightened at his response to my first year success. However, I was determined that the grade I had (4.6) then would be the very least I would ever have."

Was her stay in the university all about books and nothing more? Was she unsociable? Not at all, she replies, "I had an active social life on campus. During my stay in school, I served in several offices that have added to my training and experience as a leader. I was the Vice-President of the Public Administration Students' Association. I was a pioneer member of a voluntary club on campus (Trendz Club). This club has the aim of redefining the negative trends on campus and it helps to raise funds for the less-privileged students. I later served as the treasurer of the club. I was a member of the Redeemed Christian Fellowship, where I served as the treasurer. I was also a chorister on campus. In all, my experience in the university was demanding, challenging and exciting."

Asked if she would have obtained the same result in a public university, she again responds in the affirmative.

She notes with a whiff of excitement, "Most people believe that studying in a private university offers a smooth ride to success, but I would like to disabuse their minds in this regard because the same values of determination, luck and courage you need to survive in a public university are the same you will need to survive in any environment. Hence, I believe that I would not have performed any lesser if I had studied in a public university."
