Lagos DPO Accused of Raping Woman in Police Custody Arrested

Posted: 18 Apr 2014 05:29 PM PDT

I salute the courage of Idowu Akinwunmi for holding the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Onikan Station, SP Adekunle Awe, to account. The DPO allegedly raped, extorted and threatened her life while she was in police custody. The Lagos State Police Command has now arrested the DPO and two other policemen of the rank of inspector as part of ongoing investigations.
I hope the case which has been reported to both the Police Reform Network and the Human Rights Council reach their conclusion and get justive for her.

To readers, if you suffer any sexual assualt or rape, please go immediately to a medical center or hospital and have a sample taken and tests done.

Below is the report by Punch newspapers;

"I work at an eatery on Keffi Street, Obalende, as a cook. The eatery also has a tailor's shop in the compound and it belongs to the same person. There is also a quarters where we all live in the compound.

"Most of the workers are from Cotonou, Benin Republic. On Monday, a popular customer, known as Friday, came to eat. He later left, but some moments later, he returned to say he could not get a bus home.

"Friday had been making advances at me, but we were not a couple. I allowed him to sleep over."

Akinwunmi said around 1am, her boss, who discovered that someone was sleeping over, called the police to arrest her and Friday.

She said two other people, who slept over at the tailors' quarters were also rounded up.

She said, "My madam called policemen to arrest all of us.  I had only a pair of shorts, a shirt and a wrapper on. I had N11, 000 in my pocket and my phone was not with me. On getting to the station, I got the phone of a policewoman and used it to call one of the tailors to come and help.

"In the morning of Tuesday, two tailors, Ben and Matthias, arrived to bail out their friends, but they were also arrested, bringing our total number to six."

The victim said a few hours later, she felt sticky and pleaded with a policewoman on duty to allow her have a bath.

She said she could not use the shower because it was too filthy, adding that on her way out, she met the DPO for the first time.

She said, "I met the DPO along the corridor. He asked me what happened and I explained everything to him.

"Around 10pm on Tuesday, the DPO sent a policeman to call Friday and I. I was wearing boxers and a top. I stayed at the counter and Friday went in to see the DPO. A few minutes later, Friday came out and the DPO called me in.

"The DPO said he could make sure that I spent the rest of my life in jail, but I begged him. He then came close to me and started rubbing his hands all over my body but I rejected his advances.

"He said my boss had told him that he could do whatever he wanted to do with me. He said since I was from Benin Republic, if he killed me, nothing would happen.

"He said he would also make sure that the remaining five suspects would be sent to prison. At this point, the DPO had already taken off his clothes. Since I was afraid for my life, I allowed the DPO to have his way.

"I begged him to use a condom, but he refused. He pushed me to a smaller room in his office and put me on the bed and had sex with me. Immediately after he had finished, he told me to shower in a bathroom inside his office."

The mother of two told PUNCH Metro that the DPO promised to ensure that she was released the next morning and ordered a policeman to take her back into the cell.

Akinwunmi said when she returned to the cell, she cried through the night. She said the following morning, she told some female police officers about the incident.

She said when her people came to bail her from the station, the DPO asked one Inspector Taiwo to bring her to his office.

"The DPO gave me his telephone number and asked for mine, but I didn't give it to him. He then said I could leave and promised that no one would collect bail money from us. However, on getting to the counter, the policemen on duty collected N30, 000 from us," she said.

Our correspondent learnt that the victim immediately went to the Lagos Island Maternity Clinic to do a test.

A copy of the medical report, signed by one Dr. R. A. Seriki, stated, "A complaint of sexual assault: General clinical condition satisfactory; no laceration, no bruises, no areas of hyperemia, negative for HIV 1 and 2, pregnancy negative. Has been placed on PEP and emergency contraception."

The matter was said to have been reported at the Area A Police Command, Lion Building, after which the Area Commander, ACP Imohimi Edgal, invited the victim for interrogation.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the matter had been transferred to the office of the Commissioner of Police.

The Director, Project Alert on Violence Against Women, Dr. Josephine Effah-Chukwumah, urged the police to handle the matter seriously.

She said, "The fact that there were no bruises does not mean that rape did not occur. The moment there is a direct threat to life on the condition of sex, the offence is rape. It is unacceptable."

Meanwhile, the Network on Police Reform in Nigeria has petitioned the National Human Rights Commission over the alleged rape of Akinwunmi.

The petition, dated April 16 2014 and signed by NOPRIN's National Coordinator, Mr. Okechukwu Nwagunma, read in part, "We were informed that she (Akinwunmi) was detained in the cell…

"She said that Awe forcefully had carnal knowledge of her without protection after which he threatened to send her to prison."

The petition added that Akinwunmi was released after some policemen at the Onikan police station had extorted money from her.

It was gathered that  the Police Service Commission had received copies of the petition, while the Lagos Office of the NHRC had been directed to investigate the complaint.

When contacted, the Special Adviser to the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Mr. Henry Obe, said, "Yes we received a petition concerning the rape of a woman by a Lagos DPO.

"The case was forwarded to the NHRC Lagos office today for investigation."

When Awe was  contacted, he denied the allegation, saying it was all falsehood.

He said, "That allegation is totally false; I am aware of it. But I cannot talk now because I am driving.

"I am on my way to the Lagos Police Command. I will call you when I am through."

PSquare About To Break Up? Baseless and Untrue

Psquare's PR manager, Bayo Adetu, has described the report as false that the pop music twins, Peter and Paul Okoye, are fighting amongst themselves or that their elder brother who is their manager may be about to leave the team. He said to Premium Times,

I am too busy to give some wanna be blogger traffic, I don't know where that report is coming from. Maybe they just want to get traffic to their site. It's baseless and untrue".

A Love-Song For Couples by Kego Onyido

Posted: 18 Apr 2014 10:43 AM PDT

May you each dig deep and find self-love so that you can truly love the other person

For it is only in first loving yourself that you can you truly love another

You can only share who you are. You can only give what you have

When your souls thirst or hunger for the beauty of life

May you be quenched with the waters of unconditional love

May you be courageous to have boundaries and uproot the weeds in your garden of love

May you each be a perfect witness of the awesomeness of your lives to the glory of the creator

May you complement each other, yet find your completion from the source of all creation

May you transit beautifully from the giddiness and passion of 'blind' romantic love

To a deeper, filling, abiding love that allows you to see and accept each other exactly as you are

Stripped, vulnerable and bare, and still love each other even more deeply, passionately and truly

May you take each other down from fanciful pedestals and choose to stay rooted in the gift of reality

May you always remember that marriage is freestyle and that your style will evolve over the years

Yet the foundation will remain the same: transcendent mutual love, honour, respect and trust…

And know that in putting the other person first above all, you uplift yourself too

May you find sweet solace from the stress of the rat race in each other's warm embrace

May you always answer each other's phone calls with a smile and prayer in your voice

May you never lose your sense of humour, sense of self, passion and adventure

May you always remember sweet tender moments and learn from hurtful experiences

And still choose to leave any painful hurts in the past where they truly belong

Without perpetuating the myth of already healed wounds in a bid to play victim

May you consciously take time and resources to create memories

That will continually fuel your relationship in periods of droughts

May you take time off from life and dance bare-feet to your own music

A unique composition, blended from rhythms of your hearts and souls.

May you grow towards the light of God, in different forms and at different paces

Yet ultimately together, intimately and intricately joined, in the same direction

May you always find each other in this crowded maze of life

May God bless and keep the fires of your love alive forever

As you continue to bask in the mystery and wonder of your love

And create, heal, build, share, connect, serve and celebrate each other!

Chimamanda Adichie's Meme on Feminism Sparks Negative Trend on Twitter

Posted: 18 Apr 2014 11:21 AM PDT

Chimamanda Adichie has become the face of feminism in Nigeria with her talks, interviews and most recently her book, Americanah. For a lot of self-identifying feminists including myself, she has made the topic interesting and one for our generation. But for a lot of chauvinist men and more conservative women, she is a thorn in their flesh. This meme and some others have sparked twitter outrage with some commenters predicting her divorce, calling her overrated, and all what not. Of course Chiamamanda has her defenders. What do you think?

The Pressure on Women to Look Good - Kim Novak Pushes Back

Posted: 18 Apr 2014 08:25 AM PDT

Kim Novak during the last Oscars presented with Matthew McConaughey who I was rooting for to win Best Actor. I didn't know who she was and Atala pointed out to me she was 81 years old and I couldn't believe it. Though her face looked worked on, and she talked in a halting manner, I thought she looked good for 81. But most of the internet and press carpeted her and even Donald Trump tweeted about her. Well, she's speaking out and calling them bullies. She left the following message on her Facebook page.

KIM NOVAK SPEAKS OUT ABOUT OSCAR BULLYING
It's time to address the elephant in the room...the Oscars. I was very excited when I was asked to be a presenter on the show. I was excited, yet nervous.
Years ago, I walked away from Hollywood partially because I didn't stand up to the bullies. I caved in to the pressure instead of fighting for what I felt was right…and I didn't have the courage to prove myself to my peers through my work.
After my appearance on the Oscars this year, I read all the jabs. I know what Donald Trump and others said, and I'm not going to deny that I had fat injections in my face. They seemed far less invasive than a face-lift. It was done in 2012 for the TCM interview special. In my opinion, a person has a right to look as good as they can, and I feel better when I look better.
When I was honored at the Cannes Film Festival last year, I received an overwhelming standing ovation. Yet, in Hollywood, after the Oscars, I was bullied by the press and the public on the Internet and TV. The only difference that night was that I had taken a pill to relax—that I shouldn't have taken. I had been fasting for three days and it affected my behavior. I regret taking it.
However, I will no longer hold myself back from speaking out against bullies. We can't let people get away with affecting our lives. We need to stand up to them in a healthy way by speaking out, working out and acting out. I am speaking out now because I don't want to harbor unhealthy feelings inside me anymore.
One of the reasons I enjoy exercising and painting so much is that I can let out my frustrations and reactions to what's happening in the world around me by working it out in a healthy way. It helps me, and doesn't hurt anything or anybody. People need to get these things out of their systems and stand up to bullying. I believe there would be less suffering and violence, too!

Man Who Had Wife Killed While on Honeymoon Finally Extradited to South Africa

Posted: 18 Apr 2014 07:42 AM PDT

The story of Shrien Dewani and his wife Anni Hindocha broke in November 2010, and what a sad heart-wrenching story it was. New bride Anni was murdered in South Africa on their honeymoon, when their taxi was hijacked by armed robbers. I was so sad for the groom, he managed to jump out of the moving taxi but could not save his wife. He left South Africa heart broken.

But then, the taxi driver was arrested, and the two armed robbers, and the story took a sinister turn, their testimony revealed that the husband had paid them to kill his wife. Of course he denied it, what reason would he have to kill his beautiful young new wife? Well, a gay prostitute came out to say Dewani was a regular customer of his and had killed his wife so as to continue a gay lifestyle without his family's interference.

Anyway, South Africa applied to have him extradited to face murder charges for killing his wife, and just last week, after years of slow legal procedure, Dewani is now in Cape Town awaiting trail.

May his poor wife's soul rest in peace.

TIMELINE: MURDER OF ANNI DEWANI AND THE PURSUIT OF HER HUSBAND

2010
November 13 - Shrien and Anni Dewani's cab is hijacked as their chauffeur drives them through the rough township of Gugulethu on the outskirts of Cape Town on their honeymoon. Dewani escapes but his wife is driven off and killed. Her body is found the next morning in the back of the abandoned vehicle. A subsequent post-mortem examination finds she was shot in the neck.
November 16 - Dewani leaves South Africa. Xolile Mngeni, from the township of Khayelitsha, is arrested by Western Cape Police.
November 17 - Mngeni is charged with the hijacking and murder.
November 18 - Police arrest a second suspect, Mzwamadoda Qwabe, also from Khayelitsha.
November 20 - Police arrest a third suspect, the couple's taxi driver Zola Tongo, from Cape Town.
December 7 - Tongo is jailed for 18 years after making a plea agreement with prosecutors. The taxi driver claims Dewani offered him 15,000 rand (£1,300) to have his wife killed - something strongly denied by the British businessman's family. Dewani is arrested in Bristol under a South African warrant on suspicion of conspiring to murder his wife.
December 8 - Dewani appears at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court in London and is remanded in custody as the South African authorities fight to extradite him.

2011
March 3 - Dewani, who is said to be suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder, is sent to the Priory Hospital in Bristol.
April 20 - Dewani is compulsorily detained under the Mental Health Act at Fromeside Clinic, a secure hospital in Bristol.
May 3-5 - Dewani's extradition hearing begins at Belmarsh Magistrates' Court in London. Prosecutors cite an unnamed witness who claims Dewani confessed he needed to 'find a way out of' his marriage months before the wedding.
August 10 - District Judge Howard Riddle rules that Dewani can be extradited to South Africa to stand trial.
September 28 - Home Secretary Theresa May signs an order for Dewani to be extradited to South Africa.
September 30 - Dewani lodges a High Court appeal against Mrs May's decision.

2012
February 10 - The Western Cape High Court in South Africa hears that Dewani is to be added as the fourth accused when the murder trial eventually gets under way.
March 30 - The High Court temporarily halts Dewani's extradition, ruling that it would be 'unjust and oppressive' to order his removal. But the court said it was plainly in the interests of justice that he should be extradited 'as soon as he is fit' to be tried.
August 8 - South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority announces that Qwabe has pleaded guilty to murdering Mrs Dewani along with charges of kidnapping, robbery and the illegal possession of a firearm. He is jailed for 25 years.
In a statement as part of his plea deal, Qwabe said that after he and Mngeni staged the fake hijacking, he drove the car as Mngeni kept a pistol pointed at Mrs Dewani in the back seat before shooting her.
November 19 - Mngeni is found guilty of premeditated murder at the Western Cape High Court. He is also convicted of robbery with aggravating circumstances and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. But he is acquitted of Mrs Dewani's kidnapping.
December 3 - Dewani is allowed to switch from Fromeside to Blaise View mental health hospital in Bristol, described as a more 'open, relaxed and calm environment', after a court hears he is a 'husk' of his former self and 'adapted poorly' to treatment.
December 5 - Xolile Mngeni is jailed for life for shooting Mrs Dewani.

2013
February 13 - Dewani is admitted to hospital suffering chest pains, his family say.
April 11 - Dewani's mental health is said to have improved 'significantly,' a court hears.
May 15 - His QC Clare Montgomery tells another court update that his mental health has deteriorated.
July 1 - The full extradition hearing begins at Westminster Magistrates' Court.
July 24 - Chief Magistrate Howard Riddle rules Dewani should be extradited to South Africa
October 22 - Dewani wins a further hearing in his legal battle against extradition on a point of law

2014
January 31 - Dewani loses his final High Court challenge to avoid extradition
April 7 - The murder suspect is flown from London's Heathrow Airport to Cape Town
