8-Year-Old Girl Divorces Husband After Four Years Of Marriage!!

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 08:32 AM PST

An Indian girl of eight is believed to have become the world's youngest person to ever be divorced after leaving her 14-year-old husband.

Fatima Mangre was married off at the age of four by her father Anil in Nakhi village, in the Shravasti district of India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh in an arranged marriage with 10-year-old Arjun Bakridi but the marriage was annulled four years later when the boy came to collect his bride and her father Anil said he realised it was wrong to force her to marry at such a young age of four.

He asid he wanted to wait till she was 18 before leaving.

He said: 'I finally realised that this practice of marrying off daughters so young was wrong and that she should have a childhood, and that it was my duty to provide that.'

According to report, Arjun's father Dipak was unhappy with the decision, and an argument broke out which resulted in Anil filing for divorce.

The state government of India's has called for an inquiry into the incident. The probe was ordered after the New Delhi-based National Commission for Women (NCW) member Nirmala Samant sent a letter, demanding details of the divorce and threatening action against the parents of the girl and the boy.

She said: "This is a scandal, we need more details before taking action. The girl's father must answer why he married her off at four years old and the boy's father must answer why he agreed to such a marriage and then went to demand the girl when she is barely eight years old," adding that it was insensitive, controversial and objectionable.

However Fatima's father has already written to NCW, saying he should be pardoned because he stopped his daughter from being taken away by her in-laws.

'I have already admitted my mistake. Social pressures are high in our village. But the marriage has been annulled. I have admitted it was wrong to marry her off so early,' he said in a handwritten note.

He added: 'I now want to make things right. I want to give my daughter a good childhood. I will do everything to protect her.'

Meanwhile, the young groom's father Mr Bakridi has gone into hiding following the altercation.

ASUU Strike Update: ASUU to take Final decision during meeting on Friday Nov 22nd, 2013!!

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 06:05 AM PST

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is likely to hold its postponed National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Friday. After a wide spread rumored NEC meeting last week. ASUU is expected to decide whether or not to suspend the indefinite strike it began four months ago.
It is however unclear if the NEC will still be held at the Bayero University, Kano where it was initially proposed to hold.
ReporterTimes garthered that The leadership of the Union postponed the scheduled Kano NEC meeting following the demise of one its key members, Festus Iyayi, a former President, who died last Tuesday in a ghastly motor accident on his way to Kano for the postponed NEC meeting. He died along the Abuja-Lokoja highway in an accident caused by the convoy of Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada. The Union also urged the public to ignore speculations that ASUU has called off its NEC indefinitely, explaining that the Union only postponed the NEC meeting as a mark of honour and respect for the late Iyayi. An official on condition of anonymity confirmed that ASUU officials had last week Wednesday converged at the Bayero University, Kano, before news of Iyayi's death filtered in. The Union has been on strike since July 1 over the 2009 agreement it reached with the Federal Government. All entreaties to call it off was rebuffed until President Goodluck Jonathan waded in with an offer of N1.1 trillion to be spread across the nation's universities for a period of five years. ASUU has said it will deliberate on Federal government's offer and take a position after its forthcoming NEC.

‘Even after 50 years on stage, I am still capable of taking another wife’ - Veteran Actor, Baba Wande!

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 05:33 AM PST

Kareem Adepoju, popularly known as Baba Wande,  is one of the pioneers of the Nigerian  movie industry. The actor, who would be celebrating his 50 years on stage  on the 24th of November, was at the Tribune House during the week, where he engaged TRIBUNE in an interactive session, as he  spoke on his 50 years of acting, his new movie, marital life and other issues. Excerpts.

In a matter of days, you will be celebrating your 50 years on stage as an actor, how do you feel?
I feel good. I am very happy. I want to use this celebration to show my appreciation to God for His goodness over my life. Looking back, I know it must have been God who has sustained me despite many problems. It is a great thing to be witnessing my 50th year as an actor, and that is why I have decided to celebrate it elaborately. It is a rare privilege for me, especially when I consider how I started and where I am today.

What kind of support have you been getting towards the success of the event?
People have been showing tremendous support, but we still want more. Some people have been calling to pray for me, some have given us pieces of advice and some gave us money.

If you cast your mind back to those days when you started, so many events would have happened in your life; the good and the bad. Could you tell us which one really touched you most?
The fact is that one has to pass through different phases and stages of life to become whatever one desires. To me, anytime I pass through any phase of life, I always thank God for giving me the grace to experience life from another perspective. I don't feel sad anytime I encounter anything that makes me feel unhappy and I am not always too happy anytime I experience anything that makes me happy because I know that everything in life does not last forever. When I joined a theatre group many years back, my parents felt bad. They didn't like my decision as of that time.

So, what did you do to convince them?
I was very calm with them, but I was equally resolute about my decision. After some time, my parents allowed me to follow my passion.

Looking back, do you have any regrets?
I don't have any regret about my career. I enjoy what I am doing. People appreciate me anywhere I go because I always make them happy. I don't even know how to explain the feeling anytime I see people calling my name and appreciating me for what I do. I don't think about regret. I don't talk about it. I just want to live my everyday life thanking God for what He has done for me.

In your 50 years, what would you describe as your most challenging role in all the movies you have featured?
That should be Ti Oluwa Ni Ile.  I wrote the story myself and it was financed by Tunde Kelani. The most challenging part in the movie was when we were on the river and the boat suddenly capsized.

That means you were almost drowned...
No, we already had a rescue team on stand by in case any accident occurred. I was not scared of taking the role because I was even excited about the role before we shot the scene.

Have you ever thought of quiting?
Why would I think of that? People will not allow me to quit even if I wish to. If I say I want  to stop acting, the reaction I will get from people will kill me.

Are you not getting tired of jumping from one location to another?
I am not tired at all. I am still happy doing what I am doing because I am not tired.

What kind of women are you attracted to?
A good woman.

Who is the most special woman in your life?
My wife is the most special woman.

But you have more than one wife?
Yes, I have two wives. They love me so much. They are happy with what I am doing as an actor. Whether I am on location or at home, they support and show me much love. I love them too.

If you have the chance, would you take another wife?
I am a Muslim, my religion permits me to have more than two wives.

But you are getting old...
You are correct, you can say I am old, but my wives cannot tell me I am old.

After this 50th year celebration, what are your plans for your remaining years?
Only God knows what He plans for me. If I tell you I know, I am lying. I am waiting for God's direction. Anytime I wake up in the morning, my only prayer is that God should  direct me on my next plan.

You speak English, did you go to school?
Yes, I went to school, but I stopped at the secondary modern school in 1961.

One would expect that given the period when you schooled, modern school certificate holders then were the elites. Why did you decide to go into acting instead of taking a job in the civil service?
Right from primary school, I have been following Baba Oyin Adejobi in taking part in many of his plays. It was only natural to continue in that path.

So, you never attempted to work for government?
I never did.

Are any of your children taking after you?
They help me during production whenever they have the time, but they have their own jobs- some are working with the government, some are still in school and one works at a bank. If any of my children is interested in acting, I won't stop them. But I won't advise them to take after me.

Are you not planning to retire?
Actors don't retire. I don't see myself retiring from acting anytime soon. Oyin Adejobi did not retire, Hubert Ogunde did not retire and none of the elders  who started before us retired. Even though I don't like producing movies everytime and I also don't like appearing in all movies, I won't retire.

What do you do in your leisure time?
I read the Holy Quran.

Do you consider yourself a fulfilled man
I  am very satisfied. My children are doing well. My family is doing great and my career is blossoming. I can conveniently say that I am successful and satisfied with my life. When I go out and see people rushing out to see me,  I feel happy and sometimes, I feel discouraged.

Why do you feel discouraged?
You know all these area boys who believe that actors are millionaires. If you give them N1,000, they will reject the money and demand for more. They will tell you 'don't you know we buy your films, why are you giving us peanuts?'

What inspired you to write Ti Oluwa Ni Ile?
Somebody was telling a story about a town where some people sold a piece of land and died. When I heard it, I was moved and I said that I was going to write a story about it. I did the same thing with Soldier Idumota. I love to write stories on things that people can learn from.

Why have you not been able to produce another movie like that after many years?
I love this question. In my house right now, I have more than 20 scripts that I had written, even bigger than Ti Oluwa Ni Ile, but I don't have the resources because I was not happy with how I was treated  after shooting Ti Oluwa Ni Ile.

How do you mean?
I don't want to talk much about that. What I am saying in essence is that I have not been able to raise the huge capital to produce another big movie like that. Even if a bank decides to lend me money to produce a movie, I won't take it. Don't ask me why. Piracy will not allow me to make my money. So. I don't bother myself about borrowing money to shoot movies.

What other things do you do asides acting?
In my 50 years of acting, I have not done any other thing aside acting. I don't know how God has been sustaining my family, but I have never ventured into another trade aside my profession. When you talk about payment in the Yoruba speaking movie industry, it is nothing to write home about. But I just thank God for helping me up till this stage. If I am not at location, I will be busy with other enagemement in entertainment, where I will also make my money.

What do you want God to do for you again?
I pray for good health. I want Him to continue providing for me like he has been doing for the past 50 years.

REVEALED! Ex- ASUU President, Festus Iyayi Was Shot By Policemen In Kogi's Governor Convoy?

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 05:05 AM PST

An anonymous tipster has confided in SaharaReporters that Festus Iyayi, a former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), was actually shot by policemen in the convoy of the Kogi S
tate Governor, Captain Idris Wada, prior to the road accident in which he supposedly died last week.
The source claimed that the injuries found on the late writer's chest were consistent with gunshot injuries and that a bullet did pierce his heart.
One Dr. Paul Amodu of the Specialist Hospital in Lokoja had revealed that Professor Iyayi died after "something" pierced his chest, but he didn't specify what it was.
SaharaReporters was first to reveal last week said the popular professor and writer died in a collision with a security vehicle in Governor Wada's convoy.
Sources at ASUU said they had dissuaded Iyayi's family from a "rushed" burial, as they suspected foul play.  One of the sources recalled that another former president of ASUU, Dr. Mahmood Tukur, also died in suspicious circumstances on the Kaduna-Zaria highway, with the police claiming he died of an asthma attack because he ate pepper which, they claimed, triggered it.
SaharaReporters spoke with Prof. Iyayi's son, Omole, regarding the latest information, but he said the family was unaware, and that they do not even have the  autopsy performed yet.
A press statement issued by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA)signed by its President Osahom Enabulele has previously called for a special inquiry into Professor Iyayi's death but the statement didn't say if the doctors found that Iyayi may been shot as alleged by the anonymous source.

UNBELIEVABLE!! MAN CAUGHT STEALING MONEY INSIDE MOUNTAIN OF FIRE, CHURCH!!

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 04:31 AM PST

A man, who apparently has no job to enable him feed himself, has been sentenced to spend one year in prison after he was found guilty of stealing from the Mountain of Fire and Miracles church.

Police prosecutor, Sergeant Simon Ibrahim told the court that the convict was a
habitual offender and had stolen from the same church in 2012. Sergeant Ibrahim said:

"He stole from the same church last year. He was charged before a different court and was sentenced to one year imprisonment. In fact, he was just released from prison just last week. I don't think he is ready to change."
36yrs old Ademola Ayeni was sentenced on Monday after he was convicted on charges of theft for making away with the offerings of the church members. He had been previously convicted of the same offence after he stole from the same church last year.

Magistrate Khadijat Mustapha convicted Ayeni for the offence without an option of fine, saying the sentence is meant to serve as a deterrent to those who might want to engage in similar acts.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sergeat Simon Ibrahim, told the court that (Pastor) Ojo Oyeyemi of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church, Utako, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station on November 15.

Ibrahim said the convict criminally trespassed into the church just after they had concluded
church service and stole an offering bag containing N50,800. He also stole two cheques worth N150,000 and N50,000.

"My husband does not complain about my romantic roles" - Popular actress, Nse Ikpe-Etim Reveals!!

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 04:13 AM PST

Popular actress, Nse Ikpe-Etim, rose to stardom through the movie Reloaded and has since featured in many other award-winning movies. In this interview with Tribune, the actress talks about her passion, marriage and career. Excerpts.
Before you started acting professionally, were you not afraid of the Genevieves and Omotolas?
Everyone is cautious when they enter into a new world, but I wouldn't go so far as to use the word 'afraid' There is the initial trepidation, but that comes more out of a worry of not succeeding as opposed to a fear of the competition. I have a deep respect for everyone who paved the way for the rest of us. You cannot take anything away from Genevieve or Omotola, they are fantastic actresses.

What stands you out among other actresses?
Well, I think my fans will be more suited to answer this particular question. I do not get a chance to watch a lot of my work, so at best, I can only guess.

What do you miss most about being not popular?
I miss being anonymous. I miss not having to be so guarded. Fame is a heavy cross, yes the perks make it pleasurable but the demands on you and the loss of privacy are sometimes difficult to live with. However, I chose this career, so I deal with the consequences; good or bad.

What was  your first movie  role and how did you get it?
My first movie was called Venom Of Justice. It was right after I graduated from the university. It was such a long time ago and I can hardly remember the details of how I got it. But I do know that I was very excited to be acting. This was of course before my very long hiatus.

You worked in a radio station, bank and clothing store, at what point in your life did acting find you?
I actually dabbled into acting before I went into broadcasting, banking or retailing. My stint was very short, it was right after I graduated from the university. Most people assume Reloaded was my first movie but it was in fact, my comeback. I got that role when Emem Isong insisted I had to play the character, Omoze. I did not want to at first and after a whole lot of coercing and yanking my chain, I caved in, look where it got me (smiles)

How did growing up shape you to be the person you have become?
Our past has a great deal to do with our present and future. The values I hold dear, I imbibed them as a child and young lady. I'm the eldest child, so I grew up with a fair deal of responsibility placed on my shoulders early on. I think this helped keep me grounded.

What is your definition of style?
Style is simply being comfortable in your own skin.

Tell us how are you coping as a wife and as an actress?
Women have been working and married for several years now. It can be challenging, especially when it comes to time management, but the important thing is to have a firm grip on your priorities. I know what is important to me and I always strive to keep that in focus.

What were the most challenging periods of your growing up years?
Asides  losing my dad, growing up was fairly uneventful.

You said your mum was your mentor. What are those things that make you always remember her?
My mother is the strongest woman I know. She was a rock for my siblings and I, she still is. She was always there for us, no matter the situation ,you knew you could always run to mum.

As an actress, one can be so caught up with work, what are your favourite relaxing spots?
I don't really go out. My schedule doesn't give me a lot of downtime. So, when I do get some time off, I spend it with family, sleeping or reading a good book.

You seem to be savouring your marriage, what has been the most romantic gesture from your husband?
That's because I married my best friend. There are many romantic gestures to pick from. Perhaps, one day, I'll write a book and tell it all. But until then. it's my secret.
You once said your husband is the definition of true love, what is true love?
Being with someone or people who love you completely and never judge you. That is true love. There is a bible passage that deals extensively with the subject of love. True love is all that and more.

Between Ghanaian actors and Nigerian actors, who would you describe as more romantic in movies?
I think the romance an actor portrays depends on the character they're playing or the request of the director. I doubt it has anything to do with the country that an actor is from. Acting is universal and anyone can play a romantic role.

What is the inspiration behind your signature hairdo?
I had experimented with all sorts. At one point I was blonde. Nothing really, I guess I just decided that if the hair I was born with was good enough for my ancestors, then I might as well give it a try. I do sport weaves when the roles call for it, but when I'm Nse, this is the hair I'm comfortable with.

How much would it take to have you shave your hair for a movie role?
There are implements and fashion accessories that mimic a shaved head very well. I would rather use that than shave  my hair.
In Hollywood, very rarely do you hear that an actor had to go bald to pull off a look.

How does your hubby feel when you kiss other actors in movies?
Same way I imagine every spouse who is married to an actor should feel. But he understands that this is my job and if a script calls for kissing, then it is work. However, there are different ways to show affection, you must not lock lips to show your feelings for a loved one. Skilled actors can show this without resorting to kissing.

Are you getting fulfilled as an actress?
Yes I am. I have been blessed and I'm thankful for every day I have spent chasing this dream. Of course, there are challenges, but nothing good comes easy.

Asides acting, what else do you do?
Is that not enough? Bankers work as bankers and engineers work as engineers. It is a full-time job and sometimes it is even more demanding than a nine to five job.

You are no doubt good looking, young and homely, and cannot avoid male fans, who has been the most adamant male fan you have ever had.. and what was the experience with him?
Thank you for these lovely compliments. I think I've been lucky in the crazy fan department. My fans are very respectful of my space and marital status,  I don't have any horror stories to share.

At what point in your life would you rest on your oars as an actress?
When I'm dead; acting for me is like breathing. I'm most alive when I'm pursuing my passion, which is acting. If I were to quit doing this, then it would be for very strong reasons.

 What is your greatest indulgence?
If I said my husband, would that be allowed? I don't have an addictive personality, so there really isn't anything that I indulge in regularly.

What is that thing that would make you spend millions of naira?
It wouldn't be a thing; it would have to be a person.

The woman in the movie, Mr and Mrs was passion driven and pained, could it have been an experience earlier in life?
I am a passionate person, friends and family can attest to this. But I have only been married once, so it wasn't the result of any early experience. For that role, I tried to imagine myself as a woman who loved her husband immensely and wanted to fight for her marriage. And as soon I found that reserve, it was a question of tapping into it.

Funniest thing you have read in the news about you?
This is a tricky question. Yes! There have been so many, but I don't pay much attention to what is in circulation about me.

You love to cook; don't you think you should pursue that passion too?
I will; there are plans in the works to explore this part of me publicly, but as soon as I have something concrete, you will be the first to know.
