"Friends deserted me when I was sick" – Paul Play Dairo Speaks Out!

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 10:27 AM PST

Bouncing back after a seven-year break, Paul Play Dairo recalls the medical challenge that affected his career, writes PUNCH
After a seven-year hiatus, ace music producer and artiste, Paul Play Dairo, is working towards staging a big come back. Having dropped a total of five singles since March, he says the response has been massive. In spite of the seeming lull in album sales, the RnB star who says he is up-to- beat with current trends in the music scene, still intends to drop a 'luxury' album.
"The idea is basically to fill in the gap since my last album and also sample people's opinion. Thankfully, the online comments have been encouraging. So far, I have recorded 20 songs and some of them have already been released as singles. I am currently tidying my gospel and each track has an element of Nigerian flavor and pop.
"The bulk of the money is no longer coming from album sales because these songs are already online and people are downloading them. Music business is now streamlined to performance and endorsement. I am still going ahead with the limited edition album which will be expensive because that way I will be able to control and monitor the sales and distribution," he discloses.
When Paul Play launched his way into the Nigerian music scene in 1999, riding on the goodwill and success of his late father, IK Dairo, he enjoyed solid patronage. Within a short period, he also earned an independent voice of his own, springing hit singles that include Mosorire, Happy Day and Yes O!
In 2009, however, his career was threatened when he fell ill in South Africa, while shooting some music videos for his last album and had to be rushed to a hospital. In his absence, the media was awash with speculations over the nature of the illness. It was rumoured that he had cancer, kidney failure to a spiritual attack. Four years after, he has clearly moved on, choosing not to dwell on the nature of the ailment.
According to him, the near-death-experience has taught him some lessons. He talks about a few of them in a low tone saying, "It was taught to be scared of God, and not to depend on man because God is ultimate. You don't have to trust man, but psyche yourself that people are close to you for one reason or quality or the other. I lost many trusted friends during my ailment and gained a few in the process.
"There were some who said and did things that made me say 'Oh, even you too', but you know it is part of life that when things are down you lose your friends. Right now, I am not afraid of anything. I am stronger and can take whatever life throws at me."
The year 2014 is 'Paul Play Dairo's year', if indications emerging from the soft spoken artiste are anything to go by. For one, he intends to release a Box Set- two albums of highlife and gospel music. The third will be RnB.
He says, "It will be a limited edition because it is going to be expensive.I wanted an album that people will like. That's the reason for the long silence. My management is considering working with a number of new school acts like Inyanya and Wizkid. I am open to work with any artiste, so I don't end up being an island in the industry. I don't want to streamline myself only to a group or set of people. I was taking my time to do things right and face other things. I have been able to keep up with the industry online and the commendation I have been receiving ever since is an indication that people have missed me and want me back on the scene."
The one-time Globacom Ambassador adds that so much has changed since his temporary exit from the scene. He says, "The music industry has become saturated. Today, everyone wants to sing so there is limited space to get the desired publicity. But artistes who have pedigree will always fit in, no matter what friends," he explains.
While many artistes of his time, have found it rather difficult to fit into the scene after being away for a long time, Paul Play is optimistic that his fans will embrace his return and warm up to him. He hinges his belief on the fact that Nigerians now embrace indigenous music when compared to the past.
"If you say it is difficult to come back and then give up things will pass you buy. If the likes of Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder have stood the test of time, why label yourself as old school? With a good pedigree, people will respect you and with God you can still make a comeback. I don't intend to stay in music for a long time,'' he notes.

Boko Haram Holding Kidnapped French Priest!!

Boko Haram is holding a French priest who was kidnapped in northern Cameroon, a source in the banned Nigerian Islamist group said on Friday, rejecting claims of a rift among the insurgents.
"I can confirm that the French priest is in the hands of mujahideen (fighters) from Jamaat Ahl al-Sunna Li Da'wat al-Jihad, who carried out the operation that was co-ordinated with Ansaru," he told AFP.
Boko Haram prefers to go by the Arabic name, which translates as "People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet's Teachings and Jihad" (holy war).
Ansaru is an offshoot of the militant group and has previously claimed kidnappings of foreign nationals.
The United States on Wednesday listed both Boko Haram and Ansaru as terror groups, bowing to months of pressure to act after years of bloody violence in northeast and central Nigeria that has left thousands dead.
Hours after the declaration, heavily armed men abducted Roman Catholic priest Georges Vandenbeusch from his home near the town of Koza in northern Cameroon, about 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the Nigerian border.
He was seized by about 15 people, who burst into his Nguetchewe parish base, according to the bishop of the Nanterre diocese near Paris, which has authority over the cleric.
The Boko Haram source, who did not want to be identified, declined also to say where the 42-year-old priest was being held, after the Cameroon authorities said they feared he had been taken across the border into Nigeria.
Speaking in Paris after talks with Togo's President Faure Gnassingbe, French President Francois Hollande said Vandenbeusch had "most likely" been taken to Nigeria.
"We are checking all the information that we can get," he told reporters, adding that he would speak with his counterpart in Cameroon, Paul Biya, and vowing that France was doing "all it could to find… and free" the priest.
"The fight against terrorism is still our main concern and common purpose," he added.
Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi described the kidnapping as "an extremely serious and horrible case, reflected the spread of hatred and violence in the region."
The Boko Haram source promised to reveal more details about the kidnapping "at the appropriate time".
But he added that claims of rifts within the ranks of the insurgent group, which has been linked to Al-Qaeda's operations in north and western Africa, were exaggerated.
Boko Haram originally claimed to be fighting for the creation of an Islamic state in northern Nigeria and has made suicide bombing and gun attacks its trademark.
Ansaru has been linked to at least three hostage-takings of foreigners since 2011 and has mentioned French intervention in Mali and European nations' "atrocities done to the religion of Allah" when claiming kidnappings.
"There is a deliberate attempt by the enemies of Islam to portray Jamaat Ahl al-Sunna Li Da'wat al-Jihad as sharply divided," the source said.
"What they don't know or ignore is that the two groups work closely together and most of the operations by the mujahideen are jointly carried out by the mujahideen from both sides."
AFP tried to verify the Boko Haram claim from other sources but there was no immediate information available from the authorities.
The kidnapping of Vandenbeusch, who had been working in the area for two years and had ignored French government warnings about the dangers of staying in the region, brings to eight the total number of French hostages held worldwide.
Four others are being held in Syria, another in Nigeria and two in the Sahel region on the southern fringes of the Sahara desert.
In February, a Frenchman employed by the gas group Suez in Yaounde was kidnapped with his wife, their four children and his brother while visiting a national park near the Nigerian border.
They were then taken across the notoriously porous frontier. The kidnapping was later claimed by Boko Haram, which has been waging a deadly insurgency in northern Nigeria since 2009.
The family was released in April but France denied paying a ransom or launching a military operation to secure their freedom.

"I didn’t sign any contract with Seriki, Kayefi"- 9ice Opens Up On Others Leaving Alapomeji Records!!

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 09:05 AM PST

9ice has finally cleared the air on why his proteges left his Alapomeji Records label. In an exclusive interview , the Pop singer says they were free to leave because he didn't sign any contract with them.
The 'Ike kan' singer further explained that he created Alapomeji to serve as a platform for upcoming artistes to only exhibit their talents and move on from there. He likens it to having ID Cabasa when he was upcoming.
'…It's like a flag bearer where you can lift people up. I wish there was Alapomeji when I was growing up. When I was growing all I had was a brother who believed in me and he helped me'.
'What I did then was putting them on as upcoming artistes. If you ask anyone of them, I never signed an agreement with anyone. I didn't sign them on, all I did was give them a platform whereby they can exhibit their talent to let people know about them, their content and if they deem it fit to move on they can go and that's what they did when they all left', 9ice told TheNetNg during a visit to the newspaper.
The singer also revealed that he's pretty cool with all of them, when we asked if they still talk.
'Yes we do. We talk all the time we call and talk, we still meet at shows', 9ice says.
