SHOCKER!! 15-yr old boy Axed Severally over Use of Witchcraft in Akwa Ibom!

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 09:18 AM PST

Written by Joe Eno
A 15 year boy, Asuquo Edet from  Akwa Ibom State - was mid last week tortured for more than four hours before finally axed on the head to a state of coma by assailants numbering about ten over allegation of using witchcraft power to kill his father.
Narrating his ordeal in the hands from those he called 'local cultists' to newsmen, Asuquo, who hails from Ikon- Edikor, Udung Uko Local Government Area, said he was reconciled with his parents few months ago by an Eket based non-profit organization, the Child's Right and Rehabilitation Network (CRARN) that runs a centre for witch stigmatized children, having lived there for over a year.
He maintained that his father who had unknown health issue received him with open arms, before he died a few days ago.
''My father was very happy to see me again after abandoning me for more than three years on the streets because one soothsayer, by name  Alex Otong from Obughu, bought by my stepmother told him that I was a wizard; and responsible for his illness,  the poverty and misfortune in the family….''
The Junior Secondary II student said he was sitting in his late father's house, mourning his death that fateful day when the hoodlums led by two of his stepmother's brothers, by name Silas and Peter Inwang cordoned the house and started beating him with machetes, cables, rods, spine-sticks and 'mbritem' a local sugarcane-like plant while questioning him why he returned from exile only to kill his father; assuring him that he was seeing the sun for the last time in his life. The beating which started about 12:00 pm last Wednesday lasted for about four hours when he finally fell into a state of coma after they used ax to break his head. The attackers abandoned Asuquo in in his pool of blood when they presumed that he was dead.
He disclosed that he was only woken up in the evening around 7:00 pm by a woman, who frequently visits the area for business; who asked him to leave the house before the cult men discovered he was still alive, as they would not hesitate to renew their attack or kill him immediately. Master Asuquo said he wobbled into the nearby bush where he hid himself for three days eating just raw cassava to survive before he came out to meet the Good Samaritan woman who gave him Five Hundred Naira (N500) to pay his way to the CRARN Children shelter, about a 160km away from his hometown.
He strongly fingered his stepmother who had ten children to his late father as the mastermind of the attack on him. Adding that, while he was being brutalized, by the dare devils, they persistently poured urine and combine (a local gin mixed with marijuana) on him which burned him like fire all over his body.
On arrival at the CRARN Children Shelter, he was given first aid before taken to the Immanuel General Hospital Eket for treatment. But the Doctor on call insisted that given the extent of injuries on his body, he must get a police report before he could be attended to. The CRARN Centre Administrative Officer, Mr. Nsidibe Orok told this reporter that Asuquo was currently receiving treatment at the Immanuel General Hospital, Eket at moment.
A senior police officer in Oron Area Command who did not want his name in print, however, said investigation will commence when the victim's health improves. He expressed worry over the new surge in child witch related abuse in the state, and promised the command willingness to deal with abuses of like nature.
"Let his health gets improved, we will investigate the matter. I can assure you that this command will not fold its arm and watch children being brutalized in the name of witchcraft or whatever guise." The police chief assures.

"You don’t have to be rich to win my world..I would wait for the right man even if it takes a hundred years" -Actress Karen Igho Reveals!

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 06:23 AM PST

Meeting with Karen Igho at Radisson Blu Hotel was quite fun and interesting. Dressed in a black dress, charming, cheerful and friendly, the sexy actress, OAP and model was quite outspoken about many issues. In the course of our chat, the former BBA winner opened up about career, finding the right man someday and most interestingly, her twitter feud with actress Yvonne Nelson.

Karen what have you been up to lately?

I just got back from Calabar and I would be going back there soon for the carnival. I would be there for a week along with some of the past BBA contestants. I'm still going through my movie script which would start shooting on December 5. You know I got an appearance on Tinsel. I'm still doing radio and modeling too. I'm an ambassador for GoTV, I've been doing interviews, shoots; basically I have been up and down.

You seem like a very busy person with TV, radio, modeling. How do you handle all of that?

When you are young, that is when you go hard so that later in life, you can sit back and enjoy all you have worked for. I like to think of myself as being multitalented. I am also into music. I have a song with my brother who is with a record label called MMM, owned by Mikel Obi. I have a cousin, Igho who is a video director and rapper. I also have singing twin cousins, Aaron and Sharon known as Addiction. It's such a big family and it's just fun you know. One minute I'm an actress, the next I'm a musician. I believe I can do all things if only I'm taught, because I'm a fast learner.

How is acting working out for you?

I was born to be an actress. To be honest when you are an actress, you don't plan it, it just comes naturally. I used to act dramas with my cousins and I studied a bit of Theatre Arts, so, that's basically it.

After BBA, what have you done with your prize money?

My money, I kept it oh. I saved it and I'm still saving and taking care of my family, friends and my grandma. That's why am still in the industry so that I can make more money.

What's the major lesson you learnt in the Big Brother house?

For me, it was a wonderful experience but I must say the main lesson was that when it comes to money and friendship you have to be very careful because you never know who really likes you for who you are.  People can do all sorts of things for fame and money but it still wouldn't stop me from being who I am. But what I now understand is that BBA was a game and in as much as it was a game, people got hurt but it's about time you let it go. I mean this is 2013 and all that was in the past.

Have there been such experiences in your life where you have been betrayed by a friend?

Yes, there have been lots of times like that. I'm that kind of person that doesn't beg for friendship. It is when you have lots of friends that your gist gets everywhere. You don't really hear a lot about Karen. I don't really give people the chance to say things about me because I have been hurt before and so, I just study people before I let them in. I only let you know what I want you to know.

Do you ever get bothered about stories published about you?

People have to understand that I am only human. Most of the stories you read about me are lies and when it's the truth you would know because when lies are said or printed about me I just call my manager and we take them to court. It's not like before where you can publish lies and get away with it. Now, journalists need to be careful about what they are saying and how they are saying it. I am that kind of person that if things are true I would admit it and if they are not, I would tell you so, because there's no harm in being honest.

Have you ever felt depressed and wanted to quit the spotlight because of what was written about you?

The press has been good so far because they know the consequence of their actions so I have to applaud them for that. But you see on twitter, some people just bully others. When I just come on, they just go 'hey, Karen don gbagaun o'.  Hello, I am human and I'm not perfect, even Jesus Christ wasn't perfect. They just feel that when you're a celebrity you don't have to make mistakes, but I'm  young and I'm still going to make lots of mistakes and so you better deal with it. I like the fact that I have never claimed to be holier than thou or looked down on other people.

There was a tweet supposedly from Yvonne Nelson's account taking shots at you, how do you respond to that?

Let me break it down first and foremost, I don't know Yvonne Nelson and I have never met her. I heard she is a Ghanaian actress. I don't hate on anyone who is trying to make a living but you just can't come out of the blue and insult me. Everybody knows I'm not troublesome. If you look for my trouble I would give you double. Why would you just insult Nigerian celebs and myself, 'wetin I do you na?'It's not like we've met before. Attention seekers should go and look for the attention elsewhere.

She did say her account was hacked?

If your account was hacked with a verified account they won't tweet personal messages at celebs. They would try and send viruses and spam and keep on hacking. You don't say Karen has been quiet and try to take shots at her. Right now, I don't even care anymore because they are attention seekers who when they can't get attention from men, they try to get it from women. The best thing is to ignore them. If indeed your account was hacked, you would look for my contact and call me and apologize or apologize to Nigerians or mention at me on twitter and apologize personally. I hope the girl has learnt her lesson that if you want to be famous you do it the right way. God has blessed you and put you where you are so work on how to succeed and not look for ways to belittle other people.

Were you disturbed that the tweets mentioned your boobs and you not having a boyfriend?

As a celebrity you should know that there's something called lumps and that cancer is real. If as a celebrity I'm doing something to create awareness for cancer, what is she doing? I have said it before and I am saying it again out loud, if today they say Karen we found lumps and we need to take actions I would do what I will to save my life and not bother about someone bullying me. I would do what's best for me. I love who I see in the mirror and you can't say otherwise. She says I don't have a boyfriend, I mean how cheeky is that. It's your choice not to sleep around. I get men asking me out everyday. I don't want to sleep with a hundred men before I settle with the right one.

How do you cope with the several advances from men?

You know I can go on twitter and say I'm lonely, or pick up my phone and make calls and men will arrive, but I don't want that. I want a connection. I want to be in love, I don't want to fall for someone because he is a star or because of what he has. I want to fall in love with you because of who you are. Some men come and try to entice me with materials things. You don't have to be rich to win my world. I would wait for the right man even if it takes a hundred years, after all they say God's time is the best.

A month ago you were robbed, what was the experience like?

It was in Elegushi. We were robbed of a lot of things the car get security so we thank God say dem no thief am. It was a Range Rover but no be my car. It's not about what they stole but about you being okay and not wanting to experience that scenario again.

Lately you've been very upfront about charitable causes especially breast cancer. What's the story?

Yeah, breast cancer, orphanage homes, youth empowerment and HIV. You see, the thing about Nigerians is that they don't understand when you tell them a thing because you're trying to create awareness. Telling people about my lumps was to create awareness but at the end of the day, I had it thrown at my face. At the end of the day, I really don't care because I have been able to do what I wanted to do, which is to create awareness and pass the message across-early detection is key. If you don't know what to do, we will tell you. Every year there's this thing we organize with Exquisite. We walk just to create awareness and we have a lot of celebrities coming in not because we don't have any other thing to do at the time, but because that's another way of giving back to the society. It's not always what the society can do for you but what can you do for the society? And in my own little way I give back and I don't have to wait till am 50 to do so.

What new projects are you working on?

I have my own company now and I am doing a lot. I just rebuilt my website www.karenigho.com. We are doing a lot to empower the youths. This December would be very busy for me. I'm going to Benin on the 7th, Calabar on the 23rd am just going up and down and of course I have several engagements with Naija FM which I'm a part of.

UNBELIEVABLE!! Meet the 14-Yr-Old 'Elephant girl' Who Talks to Elephants and They Listen And Also Obey!!

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 05:43 AM PST

Nirmala in hospital
Nirmala walked several miles to lead the herd away from the city

Fourteen-year old Nirmala Toppo has become something of a minor celebrity in the eastern Indian state of Orissa.
In June, panic gripped the industrial city of Rourkela one night when a herd of wild elephants entered residential areas from dense forests nearby.
Nirmala, forest department officials say, acted as a real-life "pied-piper" when she managed to drive the herd back to the forest, much to the relief of the residents.
She walked many miles with the herd, guiding it out of town, in the process getting blisters on her legs which later turned septic.
"The infection is now gone and my wound has almost dried up," she told BBC Hindi from her hospital bed where her treatment was organised by the local Red Cross Society.
Pitch invasion State forest department officials sought help from Nirmala, who is originally from the neighbouring state of Jharkhand, when they could not get the elephants to leave the city.
Forest official PK Dhola says: "When the herd entered the city, we tried our best to contain its movement. There were 11 of them, including two calves. We managed to make the herd go into the local football stadium, but we were not sure how we could drive them back to the forest. It was a difficult task."
Mr Dhola says that was when the department decided to seek Nirmala's help.
"We knew of a tribal girl who lived in Jharkhand, who talked to elephants and was able to drive them back. We called up her father and she arrived along with some other tribal people from her village."
Elephants on pitch
The herd was made to go into the local football stadium in Rourkela

The state government paid the girl for her services, he added.
Nirmala says she talks to the herd in her local tribal dialect - Mundaari - and persuades the animals to "return to where they belong".
"First I pray and then talk to the herd. They understand what I say. I tell them this is not your home. You should return where you belong," says Nirmala who is a Roman Catholic.
Her mother, she says, was killed by wild elephants and that was when she decided to learn the technique to drive them away.
In her work, she is assisted by her father and a group of boys from her village.
"We surround the herd. Then I go near them and pray and talk to them."
'Lady Tarzan' But some are not convinced by Nirmala's methods.
Orissa-based social activist Rabi Pradhan says there is no scientific evidence that wild elephants can understand what a human says. Mr Pradhan says the girl claims to talk to the herd in her own tribal language, but there is no basis for the elephants to follow what she says.
Nirmala with tribal people
Nirmala is helped by family and local villagers

However, others explain such behaviour by saying that tribal people and elephants - or for that matter, other wild animals - have been cohabiting in the forests for ages.
Niel Justin Beck, a member of the district council in Jharkhand's Simdega area, where Nirmala comes from, says due to their co-existence with the wild animals, the tribal people know how to deal with them.
"In Jharkhand, we call Nirmala a lady Tarzan. Whenever marauding elephants enter a village or destroys crops, the local forest department officials never turn up.
"It is then that the villagers approach Nirmala for help. And she is able to successfully drive away the herd after talking to them."
Growing industrialisation More than 3,000 elephants roam the forests of the three states of Jharkhand, Orissa and Chhattisgarh, stretching across central and eastern India, but over the past decade the region has become the epicentre of man-animal conflict.
According to the ministry of environment and forests, more than 200 elephants and some 800 people have been killed in the last 10 years.

Elephant habitat in India

  • Covers 110,000 sqkm (42,471sqm)
  • 64 protected areas
  • 22.35% of habitat protected
The region is rich in mineral resources and encroachment of their habitat due to increased mining and industrial activity have caused problems for the movement of wild elephants.
A violent Maoist insurgency in the region has also added to the problem.
Forests provide easy shelter for the armed insurgents and large parts of the forests are heavily mined. Frequent encounters between the security forces and rebels have also disturbed the wildlife habitat, experts say.

ASUU Strike Update: Lectures And Students To Resume Monday, November 18th 2013!

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 04:49 AM PST

A source close to top guns in the Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU) has told The Media the lecturers will ditch their four month old strike this weekend so students could resume on November 18 (next Monday).
The source said there was no way the union could reject the new offer of N220bn a year tabled by President Goodluck Jonathan during a marathon meeting with ASUU last week Tuesday.
ASUU had come out of that meeting to tell Nigerians it needed time to deliberate on the new deal and reach a consensus among it members before talking to the press.
A top official of the union,  has however said the government could not be trusted even on the new offer, and that ASUU's members were divided over the government's offer. He, however raised a beam of hope by saying the majority still decided to give  the government the benefit of the doubt.
As ASUU executives meet this Wednesday, if the fate of the strike is down to a vote among the striking lecturers, as suggested by ASUU chairman, Nasir Fagge, the four month old impasse may surely end this week.
ASUU went on strike July 1 over the non-implementation of a 2009 agreement it had with the government with a key component of the memorandum of understanding the allocation of 26% of Nigeria's total budget to education.
Although the government is planning to allocate just 9% of the 2014 budget to education, ASUU now seems set to end the strike after government offers that would surely boost lecturers' take home pay and improve varsity infrastructure.

Conundrum!! Popular Fuji Star, Pasuma in murder mess!

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 03:58 AM PST

Pasuma

One of Nigeria's most prominent Fuji musicians, Wasiu Alabi Odetola, popularly known as Pasuma Wonder is currently enmeshed in a murder mess.
From all indications, the Fuji veteran who recently celebrated 20 years on stage may be on his way into police net if matters are not well handled. Eye witnesses are saying that a member of the convoy of the Fuji star over-ran a teenage fan after Pasuma's vehicle knocked down the victim on their way from a show at Idimu-Council area of Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The victim, Bidemi, a 12-year old fan of the 'Orobokibo' singer is said to have been lurking around to get a glimpse of the star as he was leaving the St. Augustine Events Hall, Isheri-Idimu where the show took place only to lose his life in the process. 'Pasuma was trying to avoid the area boys as he was leaving and so he was driving fast and it happened that he knocked the boy down and the vehicle behind him ran over the boy', an eye witness told TheNet correspondent.
Pasuma is said to have been driving in his newly acquired Range Rover Sports and did not bother to slow down to find out what had happened. 'He sped off without caring', another eye witness said.
But the singer's minders insist he's innocent and absolutely unaware of what happened after he left the event venue. Those close to Pasuma Reveal that he wasn't initially aware of the situation and that the decease may have been hit by a random car coming behind the musician.
Investigations reveal that 'Paso', as the singer is fondly called in the streets was trying to avoid the area boys who were desperate to extort him. It has become an accepted tradition in the Fuji industry, for Fuji artistes who perform in an area to 'settle' the area boys because they form the largest percentage of their fan base.
Pasuma according to a few 'area boys' who were at the scene of the incident said the self- acclaimed Oganla of Fuji is fond of not 'settling' the area boys and it was in this bid to avoid being extorted that led to the untimely death of the teenager.
'Paso no dey like to settle. Na because e no wan settle make am drive fast like that', one of the area boys said.
Other sources say he actually tipped fans and some miscreants, but like Oliver Twist, some camps wanted more and the musician sped off after he had had enough. Speaking to NET in a telephone conversation, Pasuma's manager, Afolabi Oyekoya refused to confirm or deny the allegations. He was yet to issue an official statement as at press time, and enquiries were left unanswered.
The family of the victim could not be reached for comment. Our correspondents' visit to the St. Augustine Events Centre, venue of the show did not yield results as the management refused to comment on the incident.
All efforts to get the police officers at Idimu Police Station Area M also proved abortive, as the officers refused to entertain any questions and directed that we referred the inquiry to the office of the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, whose number was switched off at the time.
Pasuma is not the first celebrity to be involved in a hit and run. Years ago, the current president of the Actors' Guild of Nigeria, Ibinabo Fiberesima was arrested and imprisoned for killing a Lagos doctor. Also, last year, singer Terry G was alleged to have been involved in a hit and run situation. It is not clear how the case ended.

"I’ll Never Return To Gov. Chime Again" – Wife Speaks Out!!

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 03:42 AM PST

Mrs. CLARA Chime on Monday left the Government House in Enugu claiming she had been under pressure to remain as wife of  the Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime.
She said she would have walked away from the marriage during the period Chime was sick and was away for five months, but remained on "very compassionate grounds."
Mrs. Chime said her thinking was that the sickness would change the governor's ways towards her but that he got worse months after his return from cancer treatment abroad.
According to her, on many occasions she attempted to leave but her family members, for pecuniary reasons, insisted she stayed put.
She said even when it was apparent that Chime no longer wanted the marriage, her family would not let her go.
She disclosed this through the mobile phone of one of her male siblings, about four hours after she eventually packed out from the Governors' Lodge on Monday.
The sibling declined revealing his identity to The PUNCH, but stated that he was one of the few family members who supported Mrs. Chime's agitation to quit the marriage.
He said if he revealed his identity, it could cause a stir between him and other family members with whom members of the Chime family were still holding meetings on the matter.
He claimed that Chime had long lost interest in the marriage but held forth because he (Chime) didn't want his image stained.
"So there was no need joining other family members into forcing her to remain in a marriage that he (the governor) was no longer interested in," said the source.
He said, "Governor Sullivan Chime just wanted to keep her within the lodge for fear that she could open up on certain things she knew about him if she was allowed to leave unceremoniously."
When the source eventually brought Mrs. Chime on the phone to speak with our correspondent, she said, "I regained my freedom to move around on Saturday and I eventually forced my way out of that place (Government House) today (Monday)."
She said, "I am not the one who is sick, but I became sick because of the way I was treated. There are some things people would do to you that make you sick or even die."
"After treating myself, I will never go back there again. I will not even wish my enemy to marry in that kind of place again."
When contacted, the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Chuks Ugwuoke, said he just returned from Lagos and was not aware.
"I have been away in Lagos and cannot speak on anything I don't know of, especially when it is a family matter. I will call you as soon as I am briefed," Ugwuoke said.
Meanwhile, a Lagos-based lawyer, Mr. Fred Agbaje, has called on the National Human Rights Commission to probe further into the issue between Chime and his wife.
Agbaje said in a statement on Monday that as personalities who lived on public fund,
the citizenry deserved to know the truth about the situation and Clara's true state of health.
He said both the governor and his wife might not have told the whole truth about the issue.
He said, "There must be an end to sinking lies. The Chimes of this world need another fatter lies to cover their present lies. The truth is that one Mrs Clara Chime is ill. To cover her public odium, she was cleverly and unconstitutionally detained by Chime.
"As for the NHRC, they need to do more research into the Chimes' affairs and expose every unconstitutionalities, not the present contradictory conflicting charade comming out of the commission."

"I can’t forget the very first day I made love to my wife" - Omotola's Husband Tells it all!!

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 03:28 AM PST

Captain Matthew Ekeinde is Omotola's husband. He recently spoke with Entertainment Express about the actress and their marriage. Enjoy part of the interview below;

What is the secret of your 17 year old marriage to Omotola?

I won't say we have been good because I am a fine boy (laughs), but it is just the grace of God. I am so lucky and also blessed by God to have married my God given partner.
That is a very important thing about marriage, you have to find and marry your God given partner. That is why a lot marriages breakup. Some men marry women because of their hips, their boobs, legs and some other side attractions. But after sex with her so many times, what happens next? Does she have a good attitude, character or good human relationship with others? I am not saying we are perfect couple, we have our own differences but we are compatible.
We have been married for over 17 years with four beautiful kids. One thing that has been working for us as a couple is that I always encourage her to be who she wants to be. I give her full support always. Lots of married women that are caught cheating on their husbands could be traced to the fact that some of their husbands don't allow them explore their talents.  I encourage my wife and kids to be what they want to be.Most of the influential men and women we have in this world didn't even go to school. So it is all about exploiting your talents. Some women love acting but their husbands won't let them believing that other men would touch or exploit them sexually. It is all about discipline. Those that want to cheat will cheat; it is all about self control.

So when you see your wife kissing on set, you don't get jealous?

No! Not all. My wife tells me about her acting. Most times she even complains that some actors she acts love scenes with have mouth or body odour that she can't wait to leave this scene.  So I even pity her on what she has to go through and endure being an actress.
This acting thing is just some minute acts and that is it. Will she follow the actor home? Lots of homes have been broken because of too pressure on the wife or even the kids.

For the 17 years that you have been married, what are those special moments you can't forget in a hurry?

Hmmm! Truly and honestly, I can't forget the very first day I made love to my wife

PHOTOS: Bill Gates Visits Nigeria...President Johnathan Honours Him With CFR!!

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 03:16 AM PST

President Goodluck Jonathan has conferred the national honours of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR)  on Microsoft founder and co-Chairman of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Bill Gate.
Jonathan said the conferment, which was done yesterday, was in recognition of Gates' support  towards the eradication of poliomyelitis in Nigeria.
The president, who warned that the politics of the 2015 general election should not be allowed to erode the gains Nigeria had made in the eradication of polio, said Gates' investiture would be done in December alongside that of other awardees.
He noted with dismay the negative effects  the 2011 elections had on the war against polio  and advised against a recurrence in 2015 when the nation would be due for another general election.
The president spoke at a forum of  the Presidential Task Force on Polio Eradication, organised by the Federal Ministry of Health, which held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The Nigeria Governors, Forum (NGF), Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Dangote Foundation, instituted an award meant to encourage governors to do more towards complete eradication of polio in the states.
The best performing state by zone in 2012 are Ondo State for the South-west, Cross River State for South-south,  Kogi State for North-central, Anambra State for South-east, Borno State for North-east  and Zamfara State for North-west.
Niger State was honoured for being the most improved state nationally in the anti-polio campaign.
Speaking further, Jonathan said it was shameful  that Nigeria was still being accused of exporting polio to neighbouring countries and particularly commended  traditional rulers for their immense contribution which has led to a sharp reduction in the infection rate.
He gave kudos to  Gates for his commitment to help Africa solve its health problems.
"Apart from supporting us in the fight against polio and provision of life saving commodities, he (Gates) is also assisting us in agriculture,"  he said.
Jonathan also commended Chairman, Dangote Group of Companies, Alhaji Aliko Dangote,  for supporting government in all sectors.

The world's richest man Bill Gates is in Nigeria for the Stakeholders Meeting on Polio Eradication. The billionaire businessman and Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote were received at State House in Abuja by President Jonathan and other top government officials. "For those states that have won this award, the challenge is that we will not want to see polio in your states again otherwise we will wipe out the award. You now have very strong partners, partner  the federal government to eradicate polio.
"Like Dangote mentioned earlier, there is no reason we should not eradicate polio by 2014. Let me assure you that the federal government is totally committed to eradicating polio. We promise that we will work hard because we don't want to hand over polio to another government in 2015. With the support of all stakeholders present here, I believe we will succeed in our commitment to eradicate polio.
"I charge you all to be so committed, especially as the elections are coming. In fact, from the analysis I was just briefed about now, I'm really surprised that in 2011 there was a lapse and it was attributed to the elections; that during campaigns for elections, we the politicians think more about winning the elections and forget about other things. I think and I charge you all that we must work together to make sure that the 2015 elections will not create any kind of gap in our commitment to eradicate polio," he said.
Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, in his remarks, expressed concerns about the incidence of polio in Kano, Borno and Yobe States.
He said: "Since November last year, we have not had the transmission of the Type A polio virus. We have reduced infection by 50 per cent though we have recently had 51 cases. Borno, Kano, Yobe and Bauchi States are on the top ranks.
"The current challenges facing the success of the fight against polio is the non-accessibility to children due to insecurity in the area, and non-accountability hence the reason the local government chairmen were invited to be part of the meeting."
He recalled that in March, some of  vaccinators were murdered in Borno State, "which led to the exercise being halted but by September, 70 percent of the children have been reached."
Also, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Sa'ad III, said traditional rulers would continue to support the fight against polio because of their concern about the welfare of their people.
"No father will sit down and watch his child crippled permanently and refuse to do nothing. The traditional rulers were the foot soldiers who did the work," he said.
On his part, Dangote said it was encouraging that Nigeria had progressed greatly in the fight against polio, adding that "by February 2014, our efforts will ensure we totally eradicate polio by that same year."
"We cannot rely on Bill Gates alone that is why we have commended the traditional rulers whose roles have ensured reduction from 102 to 51 cases.
"We will continue to be partners to ensure that Nigeria becomes a safe place to be," he said.
In his speech, Gates reiterated his commitment to support Nigeria to eradicate polio.
He said: "Every year, I come to Nigeria, I see us getting closer to the goal of polio eradication. At Abu Dhabi meeting in United Arab Emirates (UAE), we re-dedicated ourselves to the fight against polio and I have re-dedicated myself to this cause."
As part of his itinerary during his visit to the country, Gates also inaugurated the National Routine Immunisation Strategic Plan (NRISP), during which he explained that the essence of immunisation is to reduce the burden of not just diseases but also the economic implication of combating them.
While inaugurating the plan, Gates said: "Nothing is more important in health in Nigeria  than giving immunisation to children and persons in order to prevent diseases."
He also bemoaned the manner at which immunisation programmes have been implemented, stating that  "vaccination has not operated the way it should be."
The new plan is expected to provide guidelines and a workable policy that would resolve problems associated with logistics and lack of adequate vaccination.
At another occasion yesterday,  Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, assured stakeholders that the $50 million Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) loan secured by the country to combat  polio would be judiciously spent.
The loan, which Tambuwal indicated would be supplemented by a counterpart funding as provided in the 2014 budget, is targeted at making sure that the polio project did not suffer any setback.
Tambuwal, who received Gates and Dangote during their courtesy visit to the House,  said the legislature would do all it could to support the eradication of polio in the country.
Earlier, Gates had told the speaker that one of the challenges facing the project was the security threat to the vaccination team.
Meanwhile, a private sector-led coalition, the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PHN), is inaugurating a major health intervention policy tomorrow, which is aimed at accelerating Nigeria's progress in achieving the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015 and beyond.
The body, led by Dangote, former Managing Director of Zenith Bank Plc, Mr. Jim Ovia, Managing Director, Access Bank Plc, Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imokhuede, Muhammad Ali Pate, Sola David-Borha and others,  would target establishing a vibrant and fast-growing private sector initiative in the nation's health sector.
PHN's establishment was sparked by  Gates in 2010 during a high-level private sector roundtable for health with business leaders, and it is expected to be tailored after the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The body is expected to ride on the wide reach of the Nigerian private health sector, which serves all income levels, including the poor and vulnerable segments, and accounts for about 60 per cent of healthcare service provision in Nigeria.
It seeks to achieve its objectives by leveraging innovation and technology to leapfrog progress and increase access to healthcare. Primarily, it will forge synergies within the private sector as well as building strategic partnership  with the public sector to support interventions in the Saving One Million Lives Initiative, while focusing on nutrition and malaria.
Muntaqa Umar-Sadiq, who has just been appointed the CEO of PHN by the board, in a statement yesterday, said the body had evolved from a private sector roundtable focused on eradicating polio and malaria to a broader private sector-led multi-sectoral coalition committed to improving health outcomes.
