Jonathan's Convoy In Nasarawa Auto Crash, 14 Injured Posted: 31 Jul 2013 01:04 PM PDT The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Umar Shehu, has on Tuesday confirmed that the convoy of President Goodluck Jonathan was involved in an auto crash the day before, leaving 14 persons injured. According to the eyewitnesses, three confessional policemen, three mobile policemen, one member of the civil defence corps, as well as one official of the state branch of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and six civilians were "seriously injured". Mr Shehu claimed the state government had since released funds for the treatment of all the victims. He added that some of the victims have been discharged but those who have serious fracture were still at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia. According to him, the accident happened when the vehicle of a prison officer ran into the convoy of the president and collided with one of the riders, who somersaulted and thereafter ran into the crowd. "They are all responding to treatment at the hospital. Some have fractures on their legs. "The prison officer sustained minor injury. He is still in police custody while investigation is ongoing," he said. It will be recalled that the president was in Lafia for the inauguration of the newly constructed Federal High Court and Ta'al Model School constructed by the present administration in the state. He was represented by Vice-President Namadi Sambo. |
-How Police,Hoodlums allegedly killed an undergraduate,friend (SEE Photo) Posted: 31 Jul 2013 10:13 AM PDT Policemen attached to the Badagry Police Division, Lagos State, and some hoodlums have been accused of killing a 25-year-old undergraduate of Delta State University, Ifechukwude Nwainokpor, and his friend, identified simply as Kazeem. An eight-minute video clip of the gruesome killing, which was made available to PUNCH Metro, showed the two victims handcuffed together. They were covered in their own blood and beaten to death with sticks. Tyres were also put round their necks. An irate mob could be seen in the video, shouting, "die, die, burn them, burn them." At some points in the video, a policeman was seen interviewing the boys. He asked who sent them (victims) to rob the area, an accusation they denied. One of the hoodlums, holding a sharp object attempted to cut off the private part of one of the victims. Nwainokpor could be seen pleading with the hoodlums and policemen to spare his life, saying he could identify himself if given a chance. His plea, however, fell on deaf ears. Our correspondent, who visited the family of Nwainokpor on Tuesday, learnt that the lynching took place around 3pm on July 21, 2013 in Ajara area of Badagry, a community not far from Nwainokpor's family home. His father, Samuel, told PUNCH Metro that his son was arrested while passing through a street in the area but a misunderstanding later ensued and the hoodlums pounced on him and Kazeem. He added that Nwainokpor, who was nicknamed Ify, was a final year student of Geology and Mining. He said, "On that particular day, I was in Ghana when I received a telephone call that I should come immediately. My wife was in Delta State taking care of her mother.Samuel said because there had been a robbery in Ajara four days earlier, some of the residents were on the lookout for strange faces. He added that when the youth saw two unknown young men, they accosted them and an argument ensued.He said the youth called the head of the vigilante group in the area, one Asiribo. He said, "Asiribo came to the scene with a locally-made pistol and handcuffs. He handcuffed my son and his friend before asking them questions.Samuel said Asiribo's death infuriated the youth, who blamed the boys for his death. "The mob picked up sticks and beat them to death. Policemen were there," he said.Holding back tears, the retired immigration officer added that the police treated the matter as a robbery case. Beating his chest, Samuel said there was no way his son would have been involved in armed robbery. He said, "I have been living in Badagry since 1982. I have only two children and Ifechukwude is the first. Ironically, he was born in that same area where he was killed.Nwainokpor's boss, Aloysius Onyenibedi, described him as an honest and hardworking person. "I trusted him to the extent that I used to keep a lot of money with him. He was good to my children and was honest," he said.The Nwainokpor family berated the Divisional Police Officer, Badagry Police Station, Dankoli Mohammed, for the manner he treated the case. Samuel said when he approached the DPO, he was told that his son was killed at midnight for armed robbery. He said, "When the policemen came to take the corpses, guns were planted on them. Policemen at the station told the DPO that they were robbers. Their corpses were taken along with that Asiribo to Badagry General Hospital's mortuary.PUNCH Metro however learnt that through the video, some people had arrested one of the perpetrators. The suspect had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba. The spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said, "The incident is quite pathetic. Even if they were armed robbers, no one has the right to take the life of another. Why then do we have the police and the judiciary? The Nigerian police as well as the law condemn mob action and jungle justice. The commissioner of police has set up a high- powered investigation body to investigate the matter." Punch |
Posted: 31 Jul 2013 10:13 AM PDT In a revealing chat with E-247 magazine, Funke Akindele sort of replied her husband's interview with Encomium magazine that he was building a house for her before she walked out. Though Kehinde was the first to go public with the news of their separation via popular social network site, Facebook, Funke Akindele gave her ears to her in-laws who felt she could still change her mind and that separation actually is not the solution to the problem. Funke told E24-7MAGAZINE on Friday: That place is not for me, I have been through hell and back. I was abused emotionally and verbally. Really, I felt we could work things out when the trouble started two months after the marriage. But I made up my mind and shut the door of the marriage at him when the trouble was coming to me too much. I stooped to conquer him; buried my fame and name to make him my husband, but it did not work. At a point in time, I asked if it's not the same man that was all over me before we married. He nearly got me off my career. He called me severally; I did not pick his calls but when he realized my silence was tormenting him, he took to Facebook. It's alright. Ask him when did he come to my house last? He left me here in my rented apartment with nothing and he will just dash in and dash out. He gets abusive, caustic anytime we have a misunderstanding and often told me to my face, he's going to his wife in Oshodi. He sent me SMS that he has seen a buyer for his house at Adeniyi Jones for N40million. He asked me if he should sell it and that if he does, he will buy me a new car and a rent me a new apartment. Why now? I don't need all that, I want my sanity. I respect him to the end but he chose to treat me that way. He said he wanted to clip my wings. After Funke ignored him, he sent her another text abusing her and calling her names. "So you can see that he does not mean well for me," Funke re-iterated. E24-7 checks revealed as at Saturday evening that Kehinde was combing the nooks and crannies of Ikorodu to locate Funke's dad's house. Now that the cookie has crumbled, Kehinde has been calling and sending text messages, begging her to come back. He boasted: "I will do anything to win my wife back." Observers of the marriage from inception feel that when fame and money come to a meeting point in a relationship, it will result in problems if the couple are not committed and disciplined. Funke and Kehinde rarely spent substantial time together even at the peak of their marriage. Both kept to hectic schedules by virtue of their chosen professions. While Funke is often involved in back-to-back shooting on movie sets, Kehinde jumps from one construction site to another; pressing buttons for his political ambitions; and keeping dates with his wife at home and other women by the side. This sort of arrangement invariably makes keeping faith with the vows of the union very difficult. In the long run, suspicion will rear its ugly head and the couple will eventually drift apart, especially when they don't live under the same roof. Besides, Kehinde's disturbing and haunting pasts have repeatedly stared Funke right in the face, and according to E24-7 MAGAZINE's impeccable source, Funke learnt shockingly that her once beloved hubby was expelled from the University of Jos almost as soon as he was matriculated as a student of the ivory tower. His admission, according to our source, was faulty right from the beginning and since that first attempt at tertiary education went awry, he shut his door at education. When he returned from Jos, he found strength in his entrepreneurial skill coupled with the influence and support of his mother, a market leader and successful businesswoman; he became an estate developer, building chains of shops in Oshodi market. Gradually, he crept into politics and his popularity soared that he became a well-known grassroots politician and a great mobilizer. More than twice, Kehinde, who belonged to the People's Democratic Party (PDP), and his supporters have clashed with the NATIONAL UNION OF ROAD TRANSPORT WORKERS (NURTW) Treasurer, MusiliuAkinsanya aka MC Oluomo an Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) loyalist. Kehinde has also contested for elective posts twice; most recent, was the Oshodi/Isolo Constituency 1 House of Representatives in 2007 which he also lost. Many years after, he reawakened his political ambition and quickly re-aligned himself by joining the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). To shore up his image, he found in Funke who has become monstrously popular with her movie, Jenifa and the sequel, The Return of Jenifa, a ready tool. He convinced the favourite actress to lead him to the Leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he had assaulted many years ago during the market women leadership tussle between his mother, AlhajaAlmaroof and the late Iyaloja General Alhaja Abibat Mogaji. After he atoned for his 'sins,' he joined the train of well- wishers that went to London to felicitate with the former governor when one of his sons graduated from a university in London. Reliable sources told E24-7 MAGAZINE that Kehinde's lost bid to win the contract to rebuild Oshodi market really threw him off balance and that probably made him to turn the heat on his latest wife, Funke who wanted his attention. Despite the ill-fated turn that the relationship has taken, many of Funke's fans can't help but wonder if she hadn't known that the union was doomed to fail from the onset. The reason for this thinking is not far-fetched;
And as it plays out, she is free to remarry anytime she pleases without unnecessary legal impediments. This and many other factors contribute to the opinion shared by many of her fans that the delectable thespian knew that the future of her marriage with Oloyede will not be as long, colourful and bright as it appeared with all the glam. It's just too quick and too fast to break. Now that the requiem mass has been sung for the once celebrated union, one cannot but remember the view of controversial actress, Tonto Dikeh, who declared that Nollywood brides often marry "horribly." Sources close to Funke, who has returned to Asaba's movie location on Saturday morning, believe that though her action may not make perfect sense to many now as the confusion created may be laughed at while she goes through the tears, she's confident that she will smile again. |

£3,000 UK Visa Bond: We Will Retaliate –Federal Govt Insists Posted: 31 Jul 2013 09:56 AM PDT The Federal Government of Nigeria on Tuesday insisted on retaliatory action against British citizens if their government went ahead with its plan to impose a £3,000 visa bond on visitors from Nigeria and five other Commonwealth countries. "If and when a communication to that effect is received, the Federal Government will take appropriate steps to reflect its national interest. " Governor expressed displeasure that the UK authorities, which already set November as the discriminatory policy's commencement time, had not formally communicate to it on the next step of action. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olugbenga Ashiru, had at a meeting with the British High Commissioner, Andrew Pocock, conveyed the desire of Nigeria to retaliate the policy. The spokesperson for the ministry, Ogbole Ode, said in a statement in Abuja, that the British authorities were already aware of the Federal Government's position on the matter. The statement reads, "Media reports in Nigeria on Monday indicated that the United Kingdom Government will begin to implement from November, 2013, the £3,000 cash bond for first-time visa applicants from Nigeria, and five other Commonwealth countries. These media reports themselves were quoting the Financial Times of London. "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has yet to receive any official communication on the final decision of the UK government on this matter. The Federal Government has already conveyed its objection to the bond payment to the UK government. This was done when the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ashiru, summoned the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Andrew Pocock, to the Tafawa Balewa House, on June 25, 2013." Anyway, UK Prime Minister David Cameron's spokesman defended the policy, saying it was clear that it was "already working" as some illegal immigrants had voluntarily agreed to leave the UK. |

Posted: 31 Jul 2013 06:52 AM PDT You may be among the 45% of normal adults who snore at least occasionally or you likely know someone who does. He (or she) may be the brunt of jokes at family gatherings ("Uncle Joe snores so loudly he rattles the windows!"), but snoring is serious business. For one, a snoring spouse often keeps the other person from a good night's sleep, which can eventually lead to separate bedrooms. "Snoring can create real problems in a marriage," says Daniel P. Slaughter, MD, an otolaryngologist and snoring expert at Capital Otolaryngology in Austin, Texas. Not only is snoring a nuisance, but 75% of people who snore have obstructive sleep apnea (when breathing is disrupted during sleep for short periods), which increases the risk of developing heart disease, Slaughter says. Use caution before you self-treat with over-the-counter sprays and pills until you've checked with your doctor, says Sudhansu Chokroverty, MD, FRCP, FACP, program director for Clinical Neurophysiology and Sleep Medicine at JFK Medical Center in Edison, N.J. "Many stop-snoring aids are marketed without scientific studies to support their claims," says Chokroverty, who is also a neuroscience professor at Seton Hall University's School of Health and Medical Sciences. Instead, try these natural solutions and lifestyle changes which may help you stop snoring. Causes of Fatigue and Sleepiness and How to Fight Them 1. Change Your Sleep Position. Lying on your back makes the base of your tongue and soft palate collapse to the back wall of your throat, causing a vibrating sound during sleep. Sleeping on your side may help prevent this. "A body pillow (a full-length pillow that supports your entire body) provides an easy fix," Slaughter says. "It enables you to maintain sleeping on your side and can make a dramatic difference." Taping tennis balls to the back of your pajamas can also stop you from sleeping on your back, Chokroverty says. "Or you can recline the bed with the head up and extended, which opens up nasal airway passages and may help prevent snoring. This may cause neck pain, however." If snoring continues regardless of the sleep position, obstructive sleep apnea may be a cause. "See a doctor in this case," Chokroverty says. 2. Lose Weight. Weight loss helps some people but not everyone. "Thin people snore, too," Slaughter says. If you've gained weight and started snoring and did not snore before you gained weight, weight loss may help. "If you gain weight around your neck, it squeezes the internal diameter of the throat, making it more likely to collapse during sleep, triggering snoring," Slaughter says. 3. Avoid Alcohol. Alcohol and sedatives reduce the resting tone of the muscles in the back of your throat, making it more likely you'll snore. "Drinking alcohol four to five hours before sleeping makes snoring worse," Chokroverty says. "People who don't normally snore will snore after drinking alcohol." 4. Practice Good Sleep Hygiene. Poor sleep habits (also known as poor sleep "hygiene") can have an effect similar to that of drinking alcohol, Slaughter says. Working long hours without enough sleep, for example, means when you finally hit the sack you're overtired. "You sleep hard and deep, and the muscles become floppier, which creates snoring," Slaughter says. 5. Open Nasal Passages. If snoring starts in your nose, keeping nasal passages open may help. It allows air to move through slower, Slaughter says. "Imagine a narrow garden hose with water running through. The narrower the hose, the faster the water rushes through." Your nasal passages work similarly. If your nose is clogged or narrowed due to a cold or other blockage, the fast-moving air is more likely to produce snoring. A hot shower before you go to bed can help open nasal passages, Slaughter says. Also, keep a bottle of saltwater rinse in the shower. "Rinse your nose out with it while you're showering to help open up passages," Slaughter says. A neti pot could also be used to rinse out the nasal passages with a salt-water solution. Nasal strips may also work to lift nasal passages and open them up -- if the problem exists in your nose and not within the soft palate. 6. Change Your Pillows. Allergens in your bedroom and in your pillow may contribute to snoring. When did you last dust the overhead ceiling fan? Replace your pillows? Dust mites accumulate in pillows and can cause allergic reactions that can lead to snoring. Allowing pets to sleep on the bed causes you to breathe in animal dander, another common irritant. "If you feel fine during the day but obstructed at night, these things may be contributing to your snoring," Slaughter says. Put your pillows in the air fluff cycle once every couple weeks and replace them every six months to keep dust mites and allergens to a minimum. And keep pets out of the bedroom. Beware before spending money on special pillows designed to prevent snoring, Chokroverty says. "They may work if it props up your head, which fixes nasal issues, but can cause neck pain." 7. Stay Well Hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids. "Secretions in your nose and soft palate become stickier when you're dehydrated," Slaughter says. "This can create more snoring." According to the Institute of Medicine, healthy women should have about 11 cups of total water (from all drinks and food) a day; men require about 16 cups. Overall, get enough sleep, sleep on your side, avoid alcohol before bedtime and take a hot shower if nasal passages are clogged, Slaughter says. "These simple practices can make a huge difference in reducing snoring." By Louise Chang, MD [Leadership] |

PHOTOS: Meet 8 Year Old Fish-Boy With Fish-like Scale As Skin (SEE PHOTO) Posted: 31 Jul 2013 06:15 AM PDT Eight-year-old boy, Pan Xianhang has been nicknamed 'fish boy' by neighbours because he's covered from head to toe in thick, itchy scales. He was born in Wenling, China with a rare genetic skin disease known as Ichthyosis, after the ancient Greek word for fish. Ichthyosis is a heterogeneous family of at least 28 generalized, mostly genetic skin disorders. All types of ichthyosis have dry, thickened, scaly or flaky skin. In many types there is cracked skin, which is said to resemble the scales on a fish. Most sufferers develop dry scaly skin across part of their body, but Pan's case is severe, his scales have affected the shape of his eyes, nose, mouth and ears and they limit the movement of his arms and legs. The condition also means he's in constant pain and struggles to sleep at night because of the itching. Sufferers are treated with creams, oils and moisturisers, which are designed to hydrate the skin. Liz Dale a spokesperson for the UK-based Ichthyosis Support Group said: "There is no known cure and treatments for ichthyosis are predominantly keeping the skin moisturised with plenty of emollients i.e. lotions and creams. "The skin needs to be moisturized to prevent it from further drying out, which could cause the skin to crack, making it more prone to infection, which may be fatal." It is estimated that each year, more than 16,000 babies are born with some form of Ichthyosis, varying in severity of symptoms, according to Foundation for Ichthyosis & Related Skin Types. Even as Doctors are currently looking into other ways to treat him, Pan is not the first to make headlines for this stifling disease. |

VIDEO: Man Bitten By Crocodile On Head During Show Posted: 31 Jul 2013 05:57 AM PDT A trainer at an animal farm in Thailand has been bitten on the head by a crocodile during a show. Shocking video has captured the moment a trainer at a crocodile farm in Thailand was bitten on the head by one of the giant reptiles. Pravit Suebmee, 27, was performing for a group of tourists when he put his head in a crocodile's mouth on Sunday morning. The beast quickly clamped his jaws on Mr Pravit's head, leaving bite wounds on his face and neck. Despite the attack Mr Pravit was not seriously injured. "This is the first time this has happened at our crocodile farm," owner Uthen Youngprapakorn said. "I've regularly warned the performers to be careful at all times." Mr Uthen said the crocodile was probably startled when Mr Pravit slipped, causing it to snap its jaws shut. The video shows the crocodile thrash Mr Pravit back and forth for a moment before another handler pulls it by the tail, allowing the trainer to be released. |
Actor Solomon Akiyesi Again! Now Wants To Marry 4th Wife!! with Abuja business woman!!! Posted: 31 Jul 2013 05:52 AM PDT You all remember Solomon Akiyesi right? The actor that committed the scandal of the year. Well, new reports claim that Solomon has since moved on and found a new lover. While the dust raised by his pregnant wife at a Lagos church few months ago - when he tried to get married to a beautiful girl, after lying to his wife he was going to a movie location - is yet to settle down, sources says he is now rolling with another big woman in Abuja. Solomon Akiyesi, who had married two different ladies before a marriage drama in Lagos with his 'authentic' wife, is not ready to reconcile with his wife. In fact, he said a lot back then about his wife's "negative attitude" which he claimed drove him out. But how come he can't get to stay with one woman, or even marry two and live with them peacefully if that is what he want? Could it be that Solomon needs spiritual deliverance? |
5 ways to keep your brain sharp Posted: 31 Jul 2013 05:46 AM PDT The brain is the cooking pot of your thoughts and the root of your ideas. Keeping it sharp and alert should be one of your top most priorities. Here are easy ways to keep the brain sharp. 1.Eat more vegetables They're rich in vitamins and nutrients (like E, B6, and folic acid) that protect against brain cell damage. But don't forget that as soon as you pick a tomato off the vine or pull a carrot out of the ground, its nutrient content starts to decline. So the longer it sits on store shelves (or inside your refrigerator), the less good it's doing you. 2.Play mind games This is the best way to slow the mental decline that can come with aging. Play a musical instrument or solve crossword puzzles and other brain games. 3.Sign up for dance lessons To really sharpen your brain, pick a workout that stimulates you both mentally and physically. One great example is dance. Moving the body in a coordinated fashion and following along with complex movements in sync with music requires lots of brainpower. Dancing also works your heart, so you're pumping more blood upstairs. 4.Wear a helmet Always protect your head whenever you go cycling or motor riding. Wear the protective gear required when indulging in any activity that requires a protection gear. 5.Choose red wine over white wine Red wine contains a compound called resveratrol, which recent research shows may help prevent the buildup of plaque. Brain plaques are often seen in Alzheimer's patients, and they cause a breakdown in the communication between neurons. |
Obasanjo, A Troublesome Student At National Open University Posted: 31 Jul 2013 05:45 AM PDT The Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe said Monday, that former President Olusegun Obasanjo had a rewarding post-graduate career with the institution, saying that he was however a troublesome student. Tenebe stated this in Kaduna during the breaking of Ramadan fast parley with Muslim Journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) secretariat on Sunday. Tenebe, who also highlighted the activities of the university, pointed out that the former President completed his Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) successfully. The Vice Chancellor said: "When Obasanjo became a student of the institution, he thought that it was an easy thing to do. When he was given all the courses he realised it wasn't easy and so he had to differ his admission." He added: "He said I would not take part in this until I finish my tenure as President and so he never studied while he was the President until he completed his tenure, then he started the course. He did a post graduate diploma in Christian theology. He was a very troublesome student because he will not start calling until 12 mid night and keep you online until about 2 a.m." Tenebe further said, "every time he gives us trouble, we prayed that he graduates, of which he did, and his certificate is valid". In the pursuit of his studies, he explained, Obasanjo defied all protocols, insisting on sitting among the students, even during examination periods. "He would say I want to do the same thing others are doing. Obasanjo was a very brilliant student and I can tell you there were lots of controversies when his papers were being marked. I won't disclose the secret of how our papers are marked but they are marked in Port Harcourt, Lagos, Kano, Maiduguri and the markers will never know whose paper they are marking. So the old man is intelligent, his certificate is valid and was done according to rules and regulations of the Nigerian University Commission (NUC)." Meanwhile, Professor Tenebe has disclosed that seven vice chancellors and two prominent monarchs (Oba and Emir) were undergoing degree programmes in NOUN. [Guardian] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2013 05:45 AM PDT A Nigerian man identified as Godwin Idon is cooling off in police detention after he allegedly beat his wife to death in a rural area of Edo state after his son killed a snake in their living room. NAN reports that serious quarrel ensued between the couple after one of their sons had allegedly killed a snake in their living room. The husband was said to have been infuriated by the action which he described as a taboo in the community. After a week of quarrel, the wife in company of her mother-in-law decided to seek the intervention of a native doctor to know the implication of the son's action. It was when she returned that the husband accused her of foul-play and subsequently hit the wife on the head with a plank during a fight before the woman collapsed and died. The remains of the deceased, who died on the spot, had been deposited in a morgue in Sabongidda-Ora, headquarters of the council. The Police Area Commander, Mr David Jimwang, who confirmed the incident, told NAN that the man has been arrested and transferred to the state police command, Benin for further investigation. [NAN] |
