Shocker- Police recover 20 human skulls at a dumpsite in Aba

Posted: 04 Jul 2013 10:40 AM PDT

A dumpsite has been discovered near Aba, Abia State, where over 20 human skulls and decomposing bodies, including those of school children were found. The site, which was a horror to behold was located, at about kilometre 15 on the Aba/Azumini Highway at an area called "No man's land" after Akpaa village in Obingwa Local Government of the state.
The discovery followed the arrest of four policemen attached to the Federal Highway Patrol unit of the Nigeria Police, Aba Section, who allegedly killed a 26-year-old man in Aba.

The policemen led by their officer-in-charge, Hyginus Omeze, who were ordered to be detained by the Area Commander for Aba, Rabiu Dayi were alleged to have murdered one Onyekachi Chukwu, 26 and dumped his body at the site.

Daily Sun gathered that on Sunday June 23 Onyekachi, who hailed from Ahaba Imenyi in Isuikwuato Local Government and lived at No. 47 Ukaegbu Road, went out with his friends to drink in a hotel located on Ekenna Avenue. After spending the day, Onyekachi was said to have decided to pass the night in the house of one of his friends residing also in Ogbor hill.

According to a source, as he made to knock at the gate, the policemen came from nowhere and after beating him, got him arrested. The cops, who were said to have refused all pleas by people residing in the neighbourhood, arrested Onyekachi together with the gate man of the friend's house and the caretaker and took them to a hotel on Opobo Road, Ogbor hill, which also served as their base.

On getting to the hotel, Daily Sun learnt the policemen left the other two men behind in the hotel and took Onyekachi out in their Toyota Prado SUV and drove towards Azumini. After about one hour, the policemen were said to have come back to the hotel without the young man.

On getting back to the hotel, the policemen took the men they earlier left behind and took them back to where they were earlier arrested and ordered the occupants of the house to wash their vehicle and contribute money for them to replace the bullets, which they claimed they had wasted and the people complied without knowing what the policemen did.

The bubble, however, busted when the relations of Onyekachi, after days of searching for him without success made formal complaint to the police, who swung into action immediately and traced their colleagues, who allegedly committed the dastardly acts to the hotel, where four of them were arrested.

According to Uchechi Chukwu, an elder brother to the deceased, who believed the young man was killed for rituals, going by the way his body was dismembered; it was through the effort of the area commander that the policemen were arrested.

Then the arrested policemen, who were said to have admitted to the crime, took their colleagues to the borrow-pit along the Aba/Azumini Highway, where they dumped the dismembered body of Onyekachi. When Daily Sun visited the borrow-pit at "no man's land," where Onyekachi's body was buried in a shallow grave, the site was a horror to behold, as several human skulls and decomposing bodies, including that of school children.

Also found in the place included a piece of iron zinc which surroundings were splattered with blood and believed to been where Onyekachi was slaughtered and his vital organs removed, according to his relations.

There was equally a human organ believed to be a bladder left on the ground, where the slain man's body was found and also hand gloves believed to have been worn by those who murdered the man. When contacted on phone, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abia Command, Geoffrey Ogbonna, while confirming the incident, denied that the young man was killed for ritual purposes.

Youth Corper Crippled By Camp Commandant

Posted: 04 Jul 2013 10:40 AM PDT

Miss Mercy Okpithe joined the Dance Troupe on the Orientation Camp of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra State in November 2012. But four months later she was severely beaten up by the Camp Commandant.
Captain S.O. Beke attacked her about 11:00p.m on Monday, March 18, this year. She allegedly fainted and was rushed to the camp clinic. The following day, she was transferred to the Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Awka. At the hospital, she was diagnosed with dislocation of coccyx, a small triangular bone at the base of the spinal column.
The hospital further referred her to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, for special attention. It was gathered that she might be flown abroad for surgery.
Mercy was visited by the correspondent in her home at Lagos. As she lay down on a couch in their living room, the young lady writhed in pains, even as she struggled to answer the reporter's questions. "When the Batch A corps members were in the Orientation Camp in March, this year, the NYSC officials invited members of the Dance Troupe to the camp to teach the new corps members how to dance. We got to the camp in the evening of Sunday, March 17.
"We were 15 all together: 11 boys and four girls. The girls were not meant to stay together in the same room with the boys. But we had to because there was no vacant room. The following morning, the NYSC State Coordinator gave a directive that a separate room should be given to the girls. But the officials could not find a vacant room for us.
"So, they put us in one of the rooms occupied by some Batch 'A' female corps members. We took two mattresses each to the place. There were no bunks. So, we spread the mattresses on the ground. Thereafter, the other three girls slept but I was still awake. I was listening to music on my phone, using an earpiece.
"Around 11:00p.m., some soldiers came into the room. They were both males and females. I felt it was a normal thing because they did the same thing when I was in the camp for orientation exercise in November 2012. Then, I noticed that a female soldier was arguing with one of my friends, Ifedayo Fakehinde.
"Then, the female soldier forcefully removed one of the mattresses which she slept on. Ifedayo sought to know her offence and the soldier hit her. I quickly rose up and caught her as she was falling. Otherwise, she would have hit her head against the wall. But she sprained her hand.
"The incident caused a scene. Many corps members came out and argued with the soldiers. As this was going on, Ifedayo was crying. We calmed her down. Then, the NYSC Schedule Officer came around. He sought to know what happened. As I was explaining what I knew about the incident to him, I heard the voice of the Camp Commandant telling all the corps members to go inside.
"Before I finished my explanation, the commandant came and pushed me. I sought to know why he pushed me. But he pushed me again. I told him to stop pushing me because he could not push his sister like that. But he continued until he pushed me to the wall. Then, he kicked me from the ground and I hit the ground with my back. I couldn't move. Then, I heard other soldiers saying 'die, die, die' till I passed out."
According to a sourse, the Schedule Officer ran to call the State Coordinator, Mrs. I.B. Ekpe, when the commandant was purportedly beating the corps member.
Mr. Solomon Okpithe, Mercy's father, said an official of the NYSC called him on phone in the afternoon of Tuesday, March 19, telling him that Mercy was involved in an accident and that he should come to Awka immediately.
The official told Mercy's father to come with somebody who would stay in the teaching hospital to take care of Mercy. When he got to the hospital with his wife at about 12:30p.m the following day, they were shocked to hear that she was brutalised by the camp commandant. Okpithe said the first thing that came to his mind was how to save his daughter's life. He sought to see the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the teaching hospital but could not see him until about 7:00p.m when he came out from the theatre.
"I asked the CMD about my daughter's condition, but he said the hospital could not handle it and he would refer her to Enugu. I told him that I was from Lagos and asked if he could refer her to any hospital in Lagos. Then, he said he would refer her to Igbobi. Immediately, he instructed the doctor that was in charge to write the letter.
"On Thursday morning, we were at Igbobi. The doctors at the hospital tried but the sad thing is that they told us they could not handle it too. They said it's not just an orthopaedic case but something that has to do with the spine. They treated her and asked us to take her home. Then, they gave an appointment," he said.
On the next appointment day, according to Okpithe, the hospital said the first option, which was the treatment by orthopaedic doctors, had failed. "They said they were taking another option now and if it fails, the third option would be a surgery." Okpithe, who has since been responsible for his daughter's hospital bills, disclosed that Mrs. Ekpe promised the family that NYSC would reinburse whatever amount spent on the treatment, adding that Ekpe said she had informed the national secretariat of NYSC in Abuja about the development and had also written a letter to the NYSC in Lagos State about the incident.
"I have received calls from one Mrs. Daniel from the NYSC Office, Lagos, telling me I should accept their sympathy on my daughter. But on the other hand, Mrs Ekpe never stated the cause of the dislocation. I know she's doing that to protect the officer." Okpithe, an engineer, urged the Chief of Army Staff to ensure proper reform of the army, especially those in charge of NYSC.
He also advised the Federal Government to provide necessary items for corps members on the camp. The issue of inadequate mattresses, he said, caused the problem. When contacted on phone to react to the claims, Captain Beke neither confirmed nor denied the incident.

Stop Drinking: Alcohol Makes You Age Faster Than You Can Imagine

Ellie Krupnick, senior style editor, 6-10 drinks a week
Drinking Mirror is a mobile app that illustrates how alcohol consumption can really speed up the aging process. Released earlier this year as part of the Scottish government's Drop a Glass Size campaign, the app allows users to upload or take a photo of themselves, enter their weekly boozing habits and see what they could look like in ten years. And the results are just as scary as this image of a truck driver with sun damage on the left side of his face. We're talking forehead wrinkles, bloodshot eyes and saggy jowls.

Rebecca Adams, associate editor, 1-5 drinks a week

Lauren Leibowitz, associate editor, 10+ drinks a week

Renee Jacques, style intern, 1-5 drinks a week

The photos that result may be slight exaggerations. But we have to give the Scottish government props for holding a mirror up to the issue of heavy drinking among women in an effort to reduce alcohol-related diseases and deaths.

The connection between health and alcohol hasn't always been clear, especially with studies showing that moderate drinking may be linked with better overall health. Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Oscar Hevia explains that alcohol consumption has very little to do with broken capillaries. "The sun is much more of a culprit for that than alcohol is," he said. But there's no denying that drinking causes dehydration and makes our skin look tired and unhealthy. To combat this, Dr. Rebecca Baxt recommends consuming one glass of water per alcoholic drink to keep our skin hydrated. (Easier said than done, we know.)

Check out our before and after photos below, then head over to the Drinking Mirror app site to try it yourself.

At Last The Cure For HIV/AIDS Is Found By US Doctors

Posted: 04 Jul 2013 05:50 AM PDT

The cure for the dreaded Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) may be on the way soon with the report yesterday of two patients who were given bone marrow transplants to treat cancer remained free of the virus even after stopping HIV treatment.
The results presented at a meeting of the International AIDS Society in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia may yield growing hope that the virus could someday be cured, not just kept in check with a cocktail of medicines as it is now.

Giving an update in an eagerly followed trial, researchers said an HIV-positive infant in Mississippi, United States, who was put on a course of antiretroviral drugs within a few days of birth had remained free of the AIDS virus 15 months after treatment was stopped.
In Boston, United States, two HIV-positive men who were given bone-marrow transplants for cancer also had no detectable virus 15 weeks and seven weeks respectively after stopping AIDS drugs, a separate team reported.
Both research projects are at an early stage and should not be taken as a sign that a cure for the human HIV is around the corner, researchers cautioned.
Even so, they said it strengthens the motivation for pursuing the once-unthinkable goal of eradicating HIV or repressing it without daily drugs – a condition referred to as a "functional cure" or "functional remission".Indeed, an international non-profit organisation dedicated to the support of AIDS research, HIV prevention and treatment education has reported a breakthrough in the case of two HIV-positive patients who show no trace of virus following stem-cell transplants.Dr. Timothy Henrich of Harvard Medical School, United States yesterday reported that a 25 year-old amfAR-funded leadership research in the fight against AIDS has at last produced evidence of total cure. A statement by the organisation indicated that it is closing in on a total cure for AIDS globally.

Henrich's patients had been on long-term antiretroviral therapy for HIV when they developed lymphoma. To treat the cancer, the patients underwent stem-cell transplants. Since the transplants, Henrich has been unable to find any evidence of HIV infection. With support from a special amfAR grant made possible by the Bucks County Friends of amfAR and the Joseph F. McCrindle Foundation, Henrich conducted a clinical study in which his research team withdrew the patients' antiretroviral therapy and performed several sophisticated tests looking for signs of viral rebound in blood and other tissues. One patient has been off treatment with no detectable virus for approximately 15 weeks and the second patient for seven weeks, but it is too soon to draw any definitive long-term conclusions.

The first person to be cured of HIV, Timothy Brown ("the Berlin patient"), also underwent a stem-cell transplant to treat his leukemia. These new cases differ significantly, however, in that the stem-cell donors lacked the genetic mutation (CCR5 delta32) that renders a person virtually resistant to HIV infection. The statement posited that these findings provide important new information that might well alter the current thinking about HIV and gene therapy. It stated that stem-cell transplantation cannot be used on a broad scale to treat people with HIV because of its costs and complexity, but was optimistic that the two recorded cases could lead the team of researchers to new ways of treating- and ultimately even eradicating HIV.An estimated 34 million people are infected with HIV worldwide, and about 1.8 million die each year. The virus was first identified in 1981, and until the advent of anti-retroviral was essentially a death sentence, progressively destroying the immune system until the patient succumbed to pneumonia or another opportunistic disease.

Senators Fight Over State Of Nation Address Bill In Nigeria [Video]

Posted: 04 Jul 2013 05:29 AM PDT

Tension flared at Wednesday's Senate plenary session as two federal lawmakers, Senator Kabiru Marafa, of the All Nigerians Peoples Party (ANPP) representing Zamfara Central and Senator Paulinus Igwe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), from Ebonyi Central, almost got into a fight over the State of the Nation Address Bill.

The rancour occurred in the hallowed chamber over the State of the Nation Address Bill which President Goodluck Jonathan has refused to sign into law.

Scroll down to watch video…

The State of the Nation Address Bill, among others, will empower the lawmakers to compel the President to appear before the National Assembly to deliver the address once a year.

In a letter to the Senate President, Senator David Mark early last week, President Jonathan said that his assent to the Bill would be subject to the incorporation of some fundamental amendments that would bring the Bill in conformity with the dictates of the Constitution, especially the discretion conferred on the President by Section 67 of the Constitution.

Jonathan wrote: "I am inclined to accede to the Bill subject to the incorporation of some fundamental amendments proposed to bring the Bill in conformity with the dictates of the Constitution".

President Jonathan in the letter noted that the Constitution had made ample provisions for such an address and that the new Bill would amount to a duplication of legislation.

He, therefore, proposed a redrafting of Clause 1 (2) to make it more flexible by substituting it to read: "The State of the Nation Address shall be delivered to a joint sitting of the National Assembly within 30 days of the commencement of the legislative year".

For Clause 3, which purports to empower the National Assembly to summon the President, where he decides not to make the address, the President said it should be substituted with a clause that conforms to the language of the Constitution.

According to him, it should rather read that: "Where for any reason the President is unable to present an address in accordance with Section 1 of this Act, the President shall in writing, inform the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives and either designate the Vice President to present the address on his behalf or transmit to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the text of the Address".

Some physically-challenged adults see barriers to their dreams; but this boy in his early teens, sees opportunities. Meet a new comedy wonder: Abednego Jacob. - See more at: http://www.gistnaija.com/2013/07/see-nigerias-first-blind-comedian.html#sthash.h7pZq4dm.dpuf
It does not take much to recognise talent. Abegnego Jacob, a 13-year-old Basic Four pupil of the Pacelli School for the Blind in Surulere, Lagos, is a budding talent. While representing his school at a charity performance organised in honour of Tunde Alabi-Hundeyin (CEO of Dudu Productions) who turned 60 a few weeks ago, he unveiled an aspect of him that gives credence to the saying that, 'some people can see without their eyes'.
Called up to the stage by Yemi Sodimu, the host at the event, the audience obviously never expected more from this child performer. But the moment he got hold of the microphone, he
started reeling out jokes, most of them original, in a manner that had several artistes present bewildered.
Taking turns, he engaged Gbenga Adeyinka and Segun Arinze in a comic session that only confirmed that he is not new to the game. For instance, when he was alerted on the stage that Segun Arinze was approaching the podium to meet him, he mimicked his (Segun's) deep baritone, portraying the character that earned Arinze his nickname, Black Arrow, in home videos.
Abednego is not yet a professional, but for an amateur he shows a lot of prospects. "I started this in 2008. I have friends in school and we would all sit together telling jokes. But each time I spoke, they would all laugh and from then on, they started asking me to join comedy since I could make people laugh. At first, I did not take it seriously until December 10, 2008, when I got the chance to perform on a real stage. That first experience was what opened me to the possibilities I have in me. I did it very well".
Since he cannot physically see his audience, one would be tempted to wonder if Abednego knows what stage fright is. "I do not feel frightened. That is because what I want to say flows in me. It just runs in me and I say it out. The good thing is that I study my environment to know what to say; I listen to the radio and watch television too. So my ears help me to pick the things going on. Even at shows, I listen to pick comments I could create jokes from".
While waiting to break into the big league, Abednego says he is contented with the several accolades that come his way whenever he performs. "I have not really started making money but I believe my time is coming. A few days ago, I took part in a comedy show, where they brought other upcoming comedians. At the end of that event, I was chosen as the 'Best Comedian of the Year'. I have also been honoured at many other events. The truth is that when I perform, people see the potentials and encourage me to aspire to the top; that is exactly what I am doing".
Getting to the top for him would, however, mean completing his studies first because according to him, that is one task his parents have assigned to him in order to pursue his talent in the creative industry. "Honestly, I thank God for my parents. They have been very supportive but they are worried about my education. Despite their encouragement, they want me to finish my schooling first. Whenever I am with them, they tell me about education and they need for me to have it completed".
Another unique aspect of Abednego is his versatility in other area of art. "I do not do only comedy; I also sing and I do a little 'emcee'. Sometimes, I try my hands on DJ jobs too. But ultimately, I want to be a producer. I know I would be happy producing and doing my comedy sketches in future".
At most shows where Abednego has featured, he quickly opts to do 'Limpopo', the popular song by KC. Does that mean KC is his best music artiste? "I just love his song. But I love an array of other artistes too like Davido and Sheyi Shay; but my best rapper is Vector the Viper".
Of course, he has a word of advice for visually-impaired children like him who believe they have something the world needs. "If you have something in you to showcase do not hide, come out and do it. Opportunity comes only to those willing to grab it".
Abednego is right about opportunity coming to those willing to grab it. At the event, he was promised a voice-over contract by Dudu Productions' boss in his next television commercials.

PHOTO: Nigerian Customs Officers Murder 30-Year-Old Car Dealer

Posted: 04 Jul 2013 05:16 AM PDT

The Lagos State Police Command has commenced investigations into the murder of a 30-year-old car dealer, Uririnke Onojorhoevwo, who was allegedly killed by officials of the Nigerian Customs Service in Iyana Ipaja area of the state.
According to the police, the Delta State indigene was shot to death on June 16, 2013, after being pursued by customs men attached to the Federal Operation Unit.

Some policemen attached to Gowon Police Division, who witnessed the incident, said after the killing, the customs men fled.
A policeman, who craved anonymity, said, "On June 16, around 5am, we saw customs men in a Toyota Hilux van with registration number, CS307A01, chasing a white unregistered Audi Station wagon. The customs men shot the tyre of the vehicle and also shot its driver.
"The driver, who was bleeding profusely, came out of the vehicle and attempted to run. One of the customs men alighted from the Hilux, moved close to the car dealer, and shot him again.
They did not touch the corpse but entered into their vehicle and fled immediately."
The police source told policemen later recovered the corpse and took it to the station.
When asked if the deceased was a smuggler, the policeman said there was no evidence to prove that he was.
He said, "After the killing, we began preliminary investigation. We thought he was a smuggler but we decided to search the vehicle. We discovered that all the relevant documents were intact including the customs duty.
"We also deduced that the deceased was driving from Idi-Iroko border and was heading towards Lagos."
Our correspondent learnt that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, for further investigation.
A source at the Homicide Department at the SCID, told our correspondent that all attempts to get information from the NCS proved abortive as it did not respond to a letter written to it.
The source said, "We wrote a letter to customs two weeks ago. We even made telephone calls to their administration department, but they have not been forthcoming."
The elder brother of the deceased, Bakapo Onojorhoevwo, told PUNCH Metro that the deceased sold vehicles for a living.
He said the deceased was based in Port Harcourt, Rivers State and was probably heading towards there when he was killed.
He said he was pained that his brother was not married and had no children. He  said the family would like to know what transpired.
He said, "Around 7.30am on that very day, I called my brother's telephone but a policeman picked it up and told me that my brother was involved in an accident and I should come to Mainland Medical Centre, Yaba. I went there with my younger sister and we were told that my brother had been killed by customs men.
"His corpse is still there and we are waiting for autopsy. My brother has been dealing in cars for the past four years. We do not know what actually happened so we want the customs to explain to us."
When contacted on the telephone, Public Relations Officer, Federal Operations Unit, Zone A of the NCS, Mr. Uche Ejesieme, said investigations were ongoing.
A text message he sent to our correspondent read, "We are on top of the situation. Necessary and appropriate steps will be taken in due course."

I’ve truly left Prophet Ajanaku -Tope Alabi Speaks

Posted: 04 Jul 2013 01:44 AM PDT

Tope-Alabi
The smooth relationship that earlier existed between popular and successful gospel singer, Tope Alabi, and her acclaimed spiritual father, Prophet Ireti Ajanaku seems to have now become a thing of the past.
The latest development is that the father-and-daughter relationship between the duo has gone sour and the man of God has reportedly replaced the top singer with an up and coming gospel artiste named Ifemide.

First Weekly learnt that Prophet Ajanaku has chosen Ifemide to be his new daughter thereby kicking Tope Alabi out of his list of spiritual children. Ifemide is now said to be the apple of the eyes of the acclaimed prophet.
When contacted on the matter, Tope Alabi, who spoke through her husband, Soji, declined to talk about the issue. He said, "on that issue, all I can say is that God is in control."
When asked if Tope Alabi still attends the church, he sharply said, "we have stopped going to the church."
Information gathered from those who claimed to be in the know of the happenings between the two was that issues bordering on alleged infidelity caused the strain in the relationship between Tope Alabi and Prophet Ajanaku.
We gathered further that Prophet Ajanaku had told the artiste to desist from certain behaviours, but that she did not listen to the man of God. We also scooped from various sources that when Tope became adamant, the pastor told her to go her separate ways and stop seeing him as her spiritual father, which was why he went ahead to anoint another singer to take over from the popular gospel artiste.
Tope has not hidden the fact that the man of God is the brain behind her phenomena success in the music industry. In most of her tracks, she sings the praises of Prophet Ireti Ajanaku. It was common for her to always sing 'the God of Ajanaku' in most of her songs.
Informants squealed to First Weekly that Tope decided to accept the development as a reality, when all entreaties she made to the prophet to listen to her defense failed.
Efforts by First Weekly to speak with Prophet Ajanaku on the issue were futile as he neither picked our phone calls nor replied our text messages to his phone as at press time.
