[Photos] Posted: 07 Jul 2014 10:53 AM PDT  The Police acting on a tip off from residents of Emi village in Owerri North local government area stormed the Emi river at about 3.30am when initiation process for new members was being carried out. The young men were arrested after a gun battle with the police. Marijuana, weapons and all manner of charms were found with them.  However, some of the students who were arrested said they were being initiated against their will. One of them, Emenike Lawrence (pictured above) said he followed one of his friend out to see another friend who had promised to buy them drink and it was when they got to the bar that he was beaten and taken to a forest for initiation "I went out with one of his friend who said I should follow him to go and see someone, a friend of his. I escorted him because he said that his friend is going to buy us drink and that if we drink we would come back, that is at Mission side. We reached there, some boys came out and started beating me. They took me inside a very big forest and then started beating us. Posted: 07 Jul 2014 10:40 AM PDT  Sources in northern Nigeria say more than 60 women and girls kidnapped by militant group Boko Haram two weeks ago have escaped. A vigilante fighting Boko Haram, Abbas Gava, says the captives fled Friday after militants left their camp to attack a military barracks and police station in the town of Damboa. A high-level security source in the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, confirmed the escape and said about half the women have returned to their homes, while the others were in the custody of soldiers in the town of Gulak. The women and girls were abducted when Boko Haram attacked the village of Kummabza in northern Borno state on June 18, killing more than 30 men and burning the village to the ground. Boko Haram is still holding more than 200 teenage girls kidnapped in April from the village of Chibok. That abduction made headlines worldwide and sparked intense criticism of the Nigerian government for failing to protect the school where the girls were abducted. Several countries, including the United States, have provided intelligence and surveillance help as part of the Nigerian effort to rescue the girls. Boko Haram has killed thousands of people during the past five years in attacks on schools, markets, places of worship and government facilities. | How Police Rescued a Newborn Baby Thrown Into Pit latrine Toilet by the Mother In Aba! Posted: 07 Jul 2014 08:44 AM PDT  It was gathered that the mother of the baby, identified as Nwaizu and who is suspected to be insane, was impregnated by a yet to be identified man. The woman, who hails from Obingwa Local Government Area of the state was said to have sometime last week, given birth to the boy in her village and before help could come to her, she threw the baby into their pit latrine and covered it. Village source, who suspected the anger of their deity, said shortly after the act, the young mother became paralyzed within the toilet vicinity and could not walk out from the area. The elders of the community were later alerted to the ugly incident and they invited a native doctor, who after some incantations, helped the woman to get up and walk again. Acting on information, a team of policemen from the Ogbor Hill Division led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mrs. Helen Nze, stormed the community and demanded that the said pit latrine be opened for the baby to be rescued if he was still alive. It was gathered that the villagers were initially hostile and wanted to fight the police team but were later over powered. He was eventually brought out by the policemen, who cleaned and took him to a private hospital where he is responding to treatment. Abia State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Geoffrey Ogbonna, could not be reached for comments but a senior police officer, who preferred anonymity, confirmed the incident and said the police were taking care of the baby while investigation continued. | Posted: 07 Jul 2014 08:23 AM PDT  The mob was reportedly angered by the death of the commercial motorcyclist and his two passengers, when they were being chased by policemen enforcing the state traffic law. Nigerian Tribune gathered that a team of policemen had attempted to impound a motorcycle when the accident occurred. The rider, in an attempt to escape from the policemen, swerved and ran into a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus, which crushed occupants of the motorcycle. A resident of Awoyaya, who simply identified himself as Femi, told the Nigerian Tribune that "some policemen were chasing an okada man on Lekki-Epe Expressway when the accident happened." He added that "the okada man, in the process, ran into a BRT bus and the three riders were killed immediately, but the policemen did not wait to attend to them, as they ran away from the scene." Crowd, mostly youths, stormed the area and were still discussing the incident when another team of policemen in patrol vans raced to the area. Serious clash ensued between the policemen and the irate mob, which forced the policemen to retreat before their vehicles were set ablaze The image maker in charge of the state police command, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident, but claimed that the only van that was burnt was an escort vehicle that belonged to an individual. | 'Nigerian soldiers are behaving like Boko Haram members' -Professor Wole Soyinka Posted: 07 Jul 2014 08:26 AM PDT The literary icon, speaking on Saturday night at the grand finale of Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa, described as shocking, the alleged burning on Friday last week of some BRT buses on Ikorodu road, Lagos, by protesting soldiers. Soyinka called on President Goodluck Jonathan to take up the matter. "I demand the Commander-in-Chief to do something about it; example must be set. This is not the first time. We have had enough," he said. He further wondered why those soldiers considered their lives more special than those of the citizens, particularly in a country where people have continued to die through senseless acts of terror. | TOO BAD! Bike Man(Okada Rider) Stabs Passenger to Death Over N50 in Lagos! Posted: 07 Jul 2014 08:33 AM PDT  Eyewitnesses said that the commercial bike rider, Tansun Usman, from Katsina State, picked his passenger from Meiran area, heading to NEPA junction. Usman however forgot to tell his passenger, a Yoruba man, that he did not have change for any other denomination aside from N50. When the passenger got to NEPA junction, he got down and gave Usman N500. Usman got angry and riled against his passenger, insisting that he did not have change for N500. The passenger retorted that Usman did not tell him before he mounted his motorbike that he did not have change. Usman angrily collected the N500 and flagged down several other motorbikes, but all insisted that they did not have N500 change. Usman's passenger than asked for N500 and immediately Usman handed the money to the man, he started walking away. The motorbike rider caught up with him, held him and demanded that he should pay for his fare. A police source said: "As the Okada rider held the passenger, they started arguing and shouting. Suddenly the passenger slapped Usman. Usman brought out a dagger, which he apparently had on him, and stabbed his passenger on the right hand side of his stomach. Sympathizers rushed the man to the hospital, but he died the following day, which was Saturday." It was further gathered that policemen from Meiran Police Station arrested Usman. Confirming the incident, police spokesperson in Lagos State, Ngozi Braide, said: "The Okada rider is 20 years and the passenger is also 20 years old. "The cyclist picked the passenger from Abule-Egba, heading to Meiran. "They agreed on N100. "When they reached Meiran, the passenger gave Usman N500, but Usman said he did not have change. "The passenger asked him to look for change, but he insisted he didn't have. "The passenger asked him if he would collect N50, but Usman refused. "That was how he brought out a dagger and stabbed his passenger. "He was rushed to hospital, but died 30 minutes later. "Usman later confessed that sometime last year, his motorbike was stolen. "He had later travelled to his state for charm and the dagger was part of what was given to him. "It was a poisonous dagger. "Immediately he stabbed the man, the man didn't last. | Posted: 07 Jul 2014 07:30 AM PDT  The 20-year-old mother of three was said to have raised the alarm on discovering her child had been missing. Despite intense search by residents of Yahaya Street where the incident happened, the girl could not be located. The matter was said to have been reported at the Shasha Police Division, and was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba for investigation. Although the culprit could not be identified, the mother of the victim was said to have told policemen she suspected a neighbour who had been showing interest in the girl and had joked that he would marry her off to his homeland in Akwa Ibom State. Our correspondent learnt that the suspect, Sunday Thomas, a bus conductor, had on the day preceding the incident played with Favour, and other kids in the neighbourhood. His brother, Friday, who was on a visit and was with him, had expressed admiration for little Favour to the delight of her mother. Meanwhile also gathered that after Sunday was arrested and was asked to locate his brother, he said he did not know his whereabouts. Sunday, an Ibibio, was arrested and arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate's court on two counts of child stealing. The charge reads in part, "That you, Sunday Thomas, and others at large, on May 26, 2014 at about 4am, at Yahaya Street, Shasha, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire together to commit felony to wit; child stealing. "That you did steal one Favour Anani, a female, aged four years." The police prosecutor, Etim Ekankuk, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the offence was punishable under sections 231 and 275 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011. Sunday said he was not guilty of the charge and elected summary trial. His defence counsel urged the court to admit him to bail in liberal terms as he was still presumed innocent in the eyes of the law. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. A.A. Demi-Ajayi, admitted him to bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties, each in like sum. She added that the sureties must depose to an affidavit of means, their addresses verified and the sum of N25, 000 deposited in the account of the Chief Registrar of the state's high court, pending the conclusion of the case. But do scandals, make or mar, stars? This is a question that would continue to attract diverse answers but the reality on ground is that different scandals affect different stars differently. Just as different stars would react differently to different scandals. Here, are some scandals some Nollywood stars found either distasteful, unbelievable, or false. Fasting for a man? I felt like going crazy Ebube Nwagbo Even though Ebube Nwagbo has told people times without number that she is just the girl next door, people have not ceased to see her as a trouble-maker, controversial and anything but the girl next door. She is probably the most scandalised Nollywood actress, but that doesn't seem to have taken anything off the 'Smile Again' producer, who is rising in the trade day after day. Beautiful, s*xy and curvaceous, Ebube has seen it all as far as scandals are concerned. The most recent is the story that she moved in with her old flame, the Limpopo crooner, Kcee. Popular Hiplife musician Drowned while trying to rescue his girlfriend yesterday (Photo) Posted: 07 Jul 2014 05:29 AM PDT  Ghanaian Hiplife musician, Castro (a.k.a Theophilus Tagoe) reportedly drowned yesterday in the Aqua safari beach while trying to rescue his girlfriend. Castro, his girlfriend and a close friend (who is also a footballer for the Black Stars), Asamoah Gyan, had gone on a weekend rendezvous when the unfortunate incident happened. According to GhanaWeb, Castro had taken one of the boats out on a cruise on the Volta Lake alongside his girlfriend, while the others continued with their relaxation at shore. So Bad!!!The lady, who was not wearing a life jacket, suddenly fell into the lake, prompting Castro to try to rescue her, but ended up drowning with her.
