Lagos Prince Arraigned For Alleged Theft Posted: 02 Jul 2014 04:24 PM PDT .jpg) The prosecutor, Feddy Asu, told the court that the defendants fraudulently obtained some goods worth N3.5 million between March and May from one Princess Adeleke with the pretext that the goods would be delivered to a Lagos monarch, His Royal Majesty, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi.Asu also stated that the items that were collected from the victims included some note books, one i-phone 5, one i-pad tablet, assorted wrist watches, gold jewellery and cash sum of N250,000. The duo were also said to have obtained N500,000 from one Jelli Elias with a promise that they would help him to buy a landed property at Lekki. The prosecutor further informed the court that Oniru, falsely represented himself to a Diamond Bank branch as one Adeniyi Elegushi. The Magistrate however admitted the defendants in bail, in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the matter till August 4, for mention. His elder brother, Ebuka, was said to have seen him setting himself ablaze and raised the alarm. A source said, "Nobody knows exactly why he took that decision. All we know is that he had been telling his parents he would kill himself, but they did not take him serious. "On Monday, around 9pm, he went inside the house and poured kerosene on his body. He wet the bed with the kerosene as well, including the house. He then lit a matchstick and set everywhere on fire." Firemen from the Lagos State Fire Service, Ikotun division, were said to have been called by a resident. They were said to have arrived the scene just on time with 10,000 litres of water with which they doused the flames. The victim was luckily saved, but with a high degree of burns. The Director of the state fire service, Rasak Fadipe, confirmed the incident, adding that parents should be wary of the comments of their children. He said, "Parents must not lose guard of their duties to their children. Where a child has been threatening that he would kill himself, it is important that parents take such a child apart for counseling to avert tragedies." Below is the transcript of her great reply: Q. You came home one day as president of the company, just appointed, and your mom was not that impressed. Would you tell that story? This is about 14 years ago. I was working in the office. I work very late, and we were in the middle of the Quaker Oats acquisition. And I got a call about 9:30 in the night from the existing chairman and CEO at that time. He said: Indra, we're going to announce you as president and put you on the board of directors I was overwhelmed, because look at my background and where I came from—to be president of an iconic American company and to be on the board of directors, I thought something special had happened to me. So rather than stay and work until midnight which I normally would've done because I had so much work to do, I decided to go home and share the good news with my family. I got home about 10, got into the garage, and my mother was waiting at the top of the stairs. And I said: "Mom, I've got great news for you." She said: "Let the news wait. Can you go out and get some milk?" I looked in the garage and it looked like my husband was home. I said: "What time did he get home?" She said: "8 o'clock." I said: Why didn't you ask him to buy the milk?" Mum: "He's tired." Me: Okay. We have a couple of help at home. Why didn't you ask them to get the milk?" She said, "I forgot." She said just get the milk. We need it for the morning. So like a dutiful daughter, I went out and got the milk and came back. I banged it on the counter and I said: "I had great news for you. I've just been told that I'm going to be president on the Board of Directors. And all that you want me to do is go out and get the milk, what kind of a mom are you?" And she said to me: "Let me explain something to you. You might be president of PepsiCo. You might be on the board of directors. But when you enter this house, you're the wife, you're the daughter, you're the daughter-in-law, and you're the mother. You're all of that. Nobody else can take that place. So leave that damned crown in the garage. And don't bring it into the house. You know I've never seen that crown." Q. What's your opinion about whether women can have it all? I don't think women can have it all. I just don't think so. We pretend we have it all. We pretend we can have it all. My husband and I have been married for 34 years. And we have two daughters. And every day you have to make a decision about whether you are going to be a wife or a mother, in fact many times during the day you have to make those decisions. And you have to co-opt a lot of people to help you. We co-opted our families to help us. We plan our lives meticulously so we can be decent parents. But if you ask our daughters, I'm not sure they will say that I've been a good mom. I'm not sure. And I try all kinds of coping mechanisms. My observation, David, is that the biological clock and the career clock are in total conflict with each other. Total, complete conflict. When you have to have kids you have to build your career. Just as you're rising to middle management your kids need you because they're teenagers, they need you for the teenage years. And that's the time your husband becomes a teenager too, so he needs you (laughing). They need you too. What do you do? And as you grow even more, your parents need you because they're aging. So we're screwed. We have no... We cannot have it all. The person who hurts the most through this whole thing is your spouse. There's no question about it. | Sad! How Soldiers kill a RCCG pastor, injure 2 others in Delta! Posted: 02 Jul 2014 08:45 AM PDT  The pastor said to be in his 30s was married with four children. A security source said the soldiers, led by a Captain, came in two Hilux vans to conduct investigation in the community, but were allegedly mobbed by villagers, who misconstrued their motive, as they took away vigilante leader and community chairman. The soldiers reportedly denied killing anybody, but admitted that they shot into the car when the villagers surged towards them. The Orodje of Okpe kingdom, HRM, Mujakperuo Orhue 1, a retired army officer, was said to have waded into the matter to calm frayed nerves after the fracas. He expressed his disappointment over the incident, saying the soldiers should not have fired at unarmed citizens. The monarch, however, pleaded with the community leadership and Okpe Local Local Government Transition Committee chair, Chief James Augoye, to find ways of resolving the issues amicably. Former Minister of Information, Prof. Sam Oyovbaire, who is from the community, confirmed that one person was killed and some persons injured, but said details were sketchy, as the soldiers claimed they fired to scare the crowd. A villager, who spoke to Vanguard said: "I saw the soldiers, they came to the community, asking for the chairman of the community and vigilante leader. They told them that there was robbery incident on Warri/Sapele expressway and asked them to reveal the identity of the person who owns the farm from which the bandits collected the wood they used to barricade the road. "They told the soldiers that none of the community people owns farm there, but the military men accused them of not doing their job effectively. "We saw the soldiers carry them away in their Hilux van and drove to the expressway, where they tied them against their vehicles until it was 6 a.m. "The youths mobilised and went to the scene where the community leaders were tied and when the army saw the crowd approaching, they started shooting indiscriminately. "A group of soldiers in another Hilux van apparently heard the gunshots and rushed to the scene, that was how the pastor, who was standing by was shot and he died immediately." Opuraja community chairman, Mr Godwill Eyaguobor, said: "The youths in the community are not criminals, none has been caught robbing in the community or engaged in any act of violence." | Police detain Emir’s son over bomb scare in Kano! Posted: 02 Jul 2014 08:30 AM PDT  The Jigawa prince identified as Mahmood Sayyadi but known and called Mazaje in social circle was said to have breached security when he was flagged down for checks. Security sources in Kano confided in Vanguard that the prince had arrived the scoop in a black SUV car and forced his way into the school campus. The ensuing commotion crippled academic activities as students took their heels to avoid been a victim of a suicide bomber. Eyewitness disclosed that few gallant security guards confronted the emir's son and forced him out of the jeep. The account further revealed that the suspect confessed to the guards that he has no link with terrorists adding that "I am here to see a friend". The account said that when it became clear the identity of the suspected suicide bomber fleeing students return in anger and was about administering jungle justice when the police arrived Vanguard learnt that a call was put to the police by a concerned citizen who deployed men to the spot to contain the situation. Security sources revealed that "the police had to apply minimum force to restore order, adding that the suspect and his car was secured and taken to the police station. | Posted: 02 Jul 2014 08:38 AM PDT   Launched by a 17-year-old boy from the UK, Rich Kids of Snapchat is a Facebook page offering a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyles of a group of teens and 20-somethings. The pictures on the site are of sports cars, private jets, luxury goods and lavish homes, all with captions revealing the kids' nonchalant attitude to money.  The page was started by an anonymous teen who, according to his spokesperson, began trading equities and commodities at the age of 12, and now is enormously wealthy. He invites people to add his handle, RIchKidSnaps, on Snapchat so that he can send them pictures from his own lavish lifestyle, and he also accepts snaps from the equally rich, which then go on his Facebook and Instagram pages. To get their pictures online, people send their snaps to the RichKidSnaps. The manager of the account then filters through them and posts the best ones on the internet. Some of the images make fun of the less wealthy, referring to them as 'peasants'. One such snap shows a person drawing the Chanel logo onto a pair of well-worn espadrilles. 'How scholarship kids fit in,' reads the caption.  In another picture, a Louis Vuitton shoe bag is stuck onto the ceiling, covering a smoke alarm. The caption says: 'How to smoke safely in your dorm'. A number of the photos show just how expendable pricy products are to these youths. An iPhone, for instance, is used to stabilize a chair with uneven legs, and an iPad is used to slice a chocolate cake. Rich Kids of Snapchat was launched in the UK last fall, catering to boarding school and university students with a penchant for compulsive spending. Now, after infiltrating the UK private school system and amassing nearly 250,000 'likes', the account apparently has set its sights on the U.S., starting with the students at University of Southern California in Los Angeles. According to the Daily Trojan, Rich Kids recently sent out a message on Snapchat claiming they were coming to the private university in the fall, and the news was not taken very well. 'This could be a potential black mark for the university,' says student writer Charlotte Chang. Charlotte goes onto to explain that the school has recently been trying to distance itself from its reputation of being the 'University of Spoiled Children'.  She concludes the piece: 'The blow-up of this Rich Kids phenomenon is not only an indication of growing materialism, but also a rise in hypocrisy in society's standard ethical values.' A representative for Rich Kids has denied that there are any plans to come to California. Nevertheless, our fascination with how the other half lives is undeniable. In 2012, a Tumblr page called Rich Kids of Instagram took the internet by storm. The page even inspired a reality TV show called Rich Kids of Beverly Hills, starring five of the uber-wealthy 20-somethings who gained notoriety from shamelessly flaunting their luxury lifestyles.The E! show is returning for a second season on August 3. Today, in response to criticism he has faced, the Rich Kids of Snapchat founder wrote a post defending the Facebook page. 'It is important to note that I would never, ever, judge someone based on their wealth,' he stated. 'I created this page for entertainment purposes only. I meant no offence whatsoever.'  He added: 'My Snapchat's sole purpose is to inspire other young people to go out and achieve what they want to achieve. I show my extreme lifestyle so that people can see that even me: someone who isn't especially intelligent, and started with only £500 (when I was 12, I am now 17) is able to achieve great things.' He also wrote in an email to BuzzFeed that despite appearances, he is generous with his money, too. 'Understandably it upsets people that I am spending money on unnecessary things, and more importantly bragging about it,' reads the email. 'However I donate over 80% of my income to charity. But what appears to be Mr Dangote's biggest strength is the fact that he has not allowed the "Africa's top moneyman" tag to get into his head. And he does not measure success by his own personal achievement but by the progress and prosperity of African people as a whole. Said he: "If you are wealthy, you are okay, but you cannot continue to be okay when there are a lot of people who are out of a job. So you need to do your utmost to see that they find jobs and the skills." Matching America Mr Dangote contends that based on projections, the future of Africa is very bright, with the biggest assets being arable land almost all over the continent – and the population. He said annual GDP growth of 5.5 per cent for the past 11 years can be maintained and even surpassed. With an entrepreneurial eye, Mr Dangote sees the key to unlocking African potential being electricity. Electric power, he argues, unleashes economic potentials in the small and medium scale industries which create most jobs. If Africa improves power generation and makes it accessible to the majority of its people, the continent will perform economic miracles, he says. For, with enough power, people will be able to run their own small businesses and have disposable incomes, he says. "By 2050, we will be able to match the size of the current American economy which is $19 trillion, from our current $1.8 trillion," he said. Another key is the population which is projected to reach 2 billion people by 2050. He, however, warned that this blessing can easily turn into a curse if it is not engaged in productive activities. "If you look at the population of Africa, almost 55 to 60 per cent of the population is below the age of 25. It is a good thing but if we don't manage it, it can be a bad thing," he warned. | 'How I survived Abuja EMAB Plaza explosion, injured student narrates! Posted: 02 Jul 2014 06:19 AM PDT  The student of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, works as a phone repairer at the plaza, visited by hundreds of Abuja residents daily. "When (school is) on break I repair phones so I can earn little to take back with me but, presently, school is in session. I just came home for a little break and decided to work as usual because I don't depend solely on my parents," Michael explained. However, on that fateful Wednesday, towards the close of work, Michael found himself running away from EMAB Plaza, his body on fire. "My legs and hands were on fire," he narrated to PREMIUM TIMES from his hospital bed at the National Hospital, Abuja. "I had to run as fast as my legs could take me, to put out the fire on my body and also to prevent my whole body from burning up." Michael was repairing a customer's phone when the bomb explosion occurred at about 4:00 p.m. "A customer of mine brought his hardware for repairs so I told him to wait at my stand while I take the phone to my colleague on the other side of the plaza who repairs software to help with the repairs," he said. "The repairs were taking too long so I headed back to ask my customer to wait a bit longer. I was just two steps away from the plaza when I heard a loud sound. Before I could turn around, my hands and legs were on fire." He said that as he ran, he was no longer aware of the fire on his body. "I could not tell if I was still on fire. All I knew was that my whole body was so hot and for a second I was restless. It was a friend of mine that held me and took me to the street were a man helped and took me to Maitama Hospital before I was referred to National Hospital," he explained. No hospital bills Michael was one of the 52 people, according to the Nigerian Government, who escaped from the bomb explosion at the plaza with burns and other injuries. At least 21 people were not as lucky; they died either at the scene or in the hospital. Alphonsus Anyanacho, Michael's father, told PREMIUM TIMES that at the time of the explosion he, like millions of Nigerians, was about to watch the match between Nigeria and Argentina at the World Cup. "I was at home but went out around that time to watch the Super Eagles match. When I saw on the television screen breaking news about the bomb blast at EMAB Plaza, I remembered my son because he goes there every morning to hustle," Mr. Anyanacho said. "I then called his number immediately but someone else picked the phone; a friend of his that helped him to the hospital." He said he left for the National Hospital immediately and got there to find his son "wrapped up." Based on the Abuja administration's resolve to foot medical bills of victims of such incident, Mr. Anyanacho confirmed that he was not charged a dime as hospital bills for his son's treatment. Sitting beside his son's hospital bed, the father said the doctors had not told him when his son would be discharged. "All I was told was that he is responding to treatment," Mr. Anyanacho disclosed. | JAMB Finally Releases Admission Cut-Off Marks to Tertiary Institutions! Posted: 02 Jul 2014 05:52 AM PDT  The cutoff points were arrived at on Tuesday, after the 5th Combined Policy meeting on admissions to tertiary institutions, held at the National Universities Commission, Abuja. The Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, who declared the meeting open, frowned on the inability of most tertiary institutions to utilise their admission quota. Wike, however, said in view of efforts to boost access, institutions which failed to utilise their admission quota for 2014 would be sanctioned. He reiterated the Federal Government's commitment to the development of ICT training, which he said, had already been inculcated into the standard curriculum at the secondary school level. He said, "I have been briefed that despite the rising demand for higher education vis-a-vis the availability of a large number of qualified candidates, some institutions did not fully utilise the admissions quota approved for them by relevant regulatory agencies in 2013. "This disservice to the Nigerian child is totally unacceptable. In line with efforts of the Federal Government to improve access, let me urge you all to with effect from today, work assiduously to ensure that all admission spaces in your institutions for the current year are fully utilised within the approved time frame." The Registrar and Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, in his presentation gave a statistical run down of candidates' preference for tertiary education. He said after the conduct of the 2014 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, candidates who applied for degree awarding institutions totalled 1,584,348, representing 70 per cent; National Certificate in Education applicants totalled 25,767 representing 1.6 per cent; National Diploma, a paltry 22,072, representing 1.3 per cent while National Innovation Diploma had just 46, representing 0.003 per cent. Ojerinde wondered why Nigeria's educational system has consistently failed to embrace technical education in its quest for industrialisation, noting that the British system which Nigeria copied now award degree in all its polytechnics.
