Ada Obiako: Where Did Your Clothes Go? Posted: 10 Jul 2014 04:19 AM PDT We're new age women. We're, dare I say it… feminists? Anything a man can do, we can do too…better too. I understand the desire for acknowledgment and power. I understand the desire for attention. But, I must say ladies that I think we're going down a dangerous slope. My question for my ladies: Why have you refused to put on your clothes? Why must we see the parts of you that we have no marital privilege to see? Why must you be lewd and crude with your dressing to prove that you have freedom and are a modern-day babe? Why must you draw our eyes to your boob spillage and barely-covered crotch region? What story are you trying to tell? And before you tell me it's just, "me doing me", and you have no agenda behind it, what I would like to know is who exactly do you think you're fooling, love? Of course you have an agenda behind it. The agenda: You want attention. You want to be noticed. You want to be desired. You want to be talked about. You want to look hotter than the rest. You want to be infamous. You want to feel significant. You want to be a "rebel". Trust me, I get it. I know it well. I too have worn a number of what-on-God's-good-earth-was-she-thinking outfits back in my days. The problem: Your agenda is costing you more than you might be willing to pay. You see, the profit won't be enough. The short-lived attention you get won't be enough to satisfy you. It won't be enough to keep you happy. It won't actually make you any more valuable to the development of people and this world as a whole. It won't make you a winner and someone else a loser. If you think that has nothing to do with you, I urge you to think again. People look at you; people learn from you, people are affected by your choices. Does walking around half-naked help anyone around you live with care and purpose? Does walking around half-naked make anyone around you healthier? Does walking around half-naked make people feel more compassionate and empathetic towards you and others? Does walking around half-naked inspire anything worth talking about? Do you want to know what walking around half-naked will do? It will increase your chances of being viewed as less of a person with feelings/heart and more of a sexual object for pleasure alone. It will increase your chances of being "used and abused" by your admirers. It will decrease your chances of being listened to for your thoughts, words, and valuable suggestions – which I know you have. It will likely cost too much. Yes, I know people shouldn’t negatively judge you by your looks but my sister, I also know your clothing choices can either help people judge you less or tempt people to judge you more. Be mindful of your clothing choices. I know you want to look sexy but I also know you don't need to be half-naked to make heads turn. You don't need to be half-naked to be a rebel. You don't need to be half-naked to be considered significant. You don't need to be half-naked to live a great life. Be purposeful about your clothing choices. Remember, people look at you and learn from you. You are always teaching and telling stories in your life. When it comes to your clothes, What story are you trying to tell? Fola Daniel Adelesi: We Should Be Able to Question Our Leaders While Praying For Them Posted: 10 Jul 2014 03:51 AM PDT When I was a teenager, I was told to pray for people in authority. I also read in my Bible that I needed to pray for people in authority. In Nigeria I think that we are doing a great deal of that but then some other issues begin to come to mind. When you are praying for your leaders and they are just not doing some basic things that you need them to do, do you just continue to pray and say nothing to them? Would it be a crime to pray for the leaders that are leading you and also speak out against some unfriendly or inhumane decisions they are taking? Can't we just let our own government know that some of the things they are focusing on are not the things we expect them to focus on just because we have been told to pray for them? While I’m not trying to break the religious frame of some of my friends reading this, I still think that it is important we clear the air on this. When I raised this issue among some spiritual leaders they answered with the 'pray for those in authority.' I immediately told them to remember that in the denomination where I worship weekly, we pray for our leaders and I think the prayers will go to waste if all we do is pray and don't tell them the right thing that they are doing well, not doing well or not doing all. I have seen the movie, The Great Debaters, a lot of times. However, the last time I saw it something struck me. Denzel Washington said, 'Jesus was a radical!' When I thought about that I realized he challenged people in authority who were hypocrites and I am wondering why we in this day will refuse to do so and just tell them that we are praying for them. Maybe this is coming because I have always had interests in leadership. I want to see good leadership and I always want to be a part of it in any way I can. But I am still wondering why all we just do is to talk and talk then after a while we say it well. Just a little while after we say, 'let's just be praying for them.' I don't think it is my job to just sit and pray for those who willingly or unwillingly take five percent of what you and I earn every time we earn and spend it the way they like on whatever they so desire. Would it be a crime to tell my leaders when they are not doing enough or when we can't just see anything they are doing? I think that the people need to wake up. We have to stop being overly religious, because if we keep turning into religion, we miss the very essence of the religion we profess to be identified with. Thus, some people ride on those wings to defraud us. They not only defraud us in this time, they have also defrauded our generations to come and all we ever do it to pray for them. As I clearly stated when I started out, we are expected to pray for those in authority and it is obvious Nigeria does a lot of that. However, should we just pray for those in authority and watch them eat hamburgers while we are kneeling on the floor for them to sit on our backs? Are we also supposed to take our cars off the roads when 'those in authority' that we are praying for are coming on the high way when they have also forgotten that our tax bought those vehicles and pays the salaries of those men they use intimidate or even assault us? Again, I am just thinking and I want you to take this as someone thinking aloud so you heard my thoughts. I believe we have to pray for our leaders but should we just pray and watch them not account for anything or not do anything? What's your take on this? Photo Credit: Dreamstime | Horst Petzold |
Jason Njoku’s Inspiring Article on Never Giving Up Posted: 10 Jul 2014 03:32 AM PDT
The road to the top is never an easy one and Jason Njoku, the founder of iROKO Partners – the parent company of iROKO TV shares his story to inspire all entrepreneurs. Read:
Needless to say life has improved somewhat, but as I go about trying to frame this statement, it definitely reminds me of how far in such a short time one's life can improve. It doesn't have to be as dramatic, but improve life can. It also should serve to demonstrate to anyone, anywhere right now toiling away in obscurity on a little project or something no one gives a flying f*** about that as long as you believe in yourself and your project then success (whatever that may mean to you) is or may be just around the corner. All you have to do is find the inner strength to stay in the game. At this point I had toiled for 6 long years. Fast forward another 4 years and everything has changed. But then I didn't know that. It was only pain. Founders. Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever give up. On yourself. You may migrate from project to project and you will never know which one is 'the one'. But one day, someday. Your stars will align. You can catch up with Jason via his website – www.jason.com.ng |

15 Soldiers Without Enough Weapons Killed by Boko Haram in Take Over Operation – Report Posted: 09 Jul 2014 05:30 PM PDT
Sahara Reporters states that 200 men of the military had been sent out on the operation to reclaim the base from Islamist militant insurgents who overran it and took it over a few days ago. The members of the group allegedly laid in ambush waiting for the arrival of the soldiers to retake the base. The group opened fire on the soldiers as soon as they arrived at the base. They killed as many as 15, and left several injured. A source revealed that the soldiers are angry that they were sent to such a high-risk operation without enough firepower and troops to take out the Boko Haram insurgents. |

Read excerpts below; On her greatest fear when she decided to star LoudNProud: “Good question. Fear is not the word I would use. ‘Challenge’ is probably more apt. I wasn't sure to what degree the industry would embrace ‘live music’ as a credible platform given that it's expensive. It is much cheaper for promoters to mobilise artistes who mime. Happy to see live music is viewed more so now as the credible way forward. It is an authentic genre and acts as a good filter for real artists with longevity to break through.” On the top three skills required to have in her line of business: “Patience, perseverance and the ability to understand people with an open mind.” On one thing people don’t know about her: “I'm a Chartered Accountant by profession who ‘missed road’ and got involved in the entertainment industry.” To read the full interview, click here. |
