Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child? Comedian Wale Gates shares his Parent-Child Violence Experience via Twitter

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 04:23 AM PDT

We often pride ourselves with this thing called ‘African Culture’. However, we find that it is often used as both a sword and a shield for a lot of unsavoury acts. Domestic violence and child abuse are some of the things that are masked beneath the veil of ‘African Culture’.

We share our experiences of how we dare not try some things with our parents, or else, we’d be beaten black and blue. Even when you listen to African American stand up comedians, you hear them talk about how parents ‘whoop the black out of you’.

This morning, Nigerian comedian, Wale Gates shared his personal experience on Twitter. There are a lot of questions raised. One of them is the quote that says ‘Spare the rod, spoil the child’.  However,  how does one find the balance between not sparing the rod and domestic violence?  Is any and every kind of beating justifiable? Do you think parents who employ this mode foster more fear than respect in their children?  Or do you believe that the end justifies the means, thus if a child turns out okay then the parents deserve a pat on the back for whatever method they used.

Please read the tweets below and share your thoughts.

Pamela Anderson Files for Divorce from Hubby…for the Second Time

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 02:46 AM PDT

Pamela Anderson - July 2014 - BellaNaija.com 02
I remember having a conversation about getting back with an ex when Taylor Swift released “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together“.

Although the song was catchy, we all know you never say never.

Pamela Anderson and her ex-hubby Rick Salomon made a lot of people believe in love all over again , when they got back together and tied the knot (again) in an intimate ceremony in January.

Their first marriage was in 2007, but they later got it annulled.

It was all good but after 6 months, the Baywatch actress, 47, filed for divorce on July 3rd, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for ending her marriage.

Her representative revealed that Pamela and her family ask for privacy at this time.

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 02:38 AM PDT

CEO Dancers for Zen magazine Interview - Bellanaija - July2014009

Cool, confident, have worked with the biggest names home and abroad and have dance moves that would make your jaw drop. The CEO Dancers are a dancing trio to reckon with.

Made up of Ezinne Asinugo, Soliat Bada and Nqobilé Ntshangase, these dancers have been featured in music videos for artists such as D’banj, Iyanya, Tiwa Savage, Alexandra Burke, Lil’ Kim and more; and show no signs of slowing down.

For an interview with Arinze Nwokolo (Editor of online magazine Zen), the dancers share what it’s like working with D’banj, their individual styles, thoughts on African fashion, items they can’t live without, tips for aspiring dancers and more.

Read Excerpts below;

On working with D’banj
D’banj is such a jovial and positive spirit to be around and he’s never without great positive energy. So it is always a pleasure working with an artist such as him as well as other artists we have worked with such as; Lil’ Kim, Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, Alexandra Burke, Dr. Sid, Vince Kidd and more.

It makes the job much more enjoyable and we are always pushed to give our best.

On their individual styles
Nqobilé
: I don’t necessarily have a particular ‘style’ but I love trends and enjoy dressing up and looking good. Lately I’m totally in love with my pastel hair colours, all whites socks’n’slides and Birks. My biggest inspo (insiration) right now is Nicole Ritchie.

CEO Dancers for Zen magazine Interview - Bellanaija - July2014004

Soliat: I tend to lean towards the more classic styles with a slight edge. Clean lines and simple silhouette best describe my style

CEO Dancers for Zen magazine Interview - Bellanaija - July2014003

Ezinne: Zara would absolutely be my favourite store to shop in and Victoria Beckham is my style inspiration as I believe she embodies great style and class.

CEO Dancers for Zen magazine Interview - Bellanaija - July2014001

On their thoughts on African fashion
It is great to witness how great African fashion and the designers have evolved and been accepted and gone to influence major designers and brands such as Burberry. Also amazing how it has now become a trend amongst celebrities such as Beyoncé, Solange, Keri Washington, Keri Hilson and Rihanna.

On items they can’t live without
Our iPhones!!! and Instagram (Laughs)

Advice for aspiring dancers
Do not try to dance better that anybody else; try to dance better that yourself. meaning as an aspiring dancer, aim to constantly challenge and push yourself through dance training i.e: classes, workshops, auditions. practice coming out of your comfort zone by learning other dance styles that are alien to you in order to be versatile and stand out to book dance jobs. What many people don’t actually is that being able to book a job and get paid is actually what sets you apart as a professional dancer.

Dear Dr. Craig,

I am a 27 year old lady and I have had two breast operations after finding lumps. The first was in 2005 when I was nineteen and the other one was last year, and this time in both breasts. Biopsy results in the two instances showed that the lumps were fibroadenomas.

Do I stand a higher risk of getting breast cancer in future as a result of these lumps?

The doctor I saw advised me to get married as soon as possible. Is there any link between fibroadenomas and being single?

Also, in the last few months I have been having severe pains in my right breast. What can this possibly mean? I am so scared of going to the hospital again.

Single-girl. Ikeja, Lagos.

***

Dear Single-girl,

First of all, to answer your last question, allow me point you to a series I ran here on Bella Naija a few months ago on breast health. A lot of the questions about lumps, how to do a self breast examination and what causes breast pain are thoroughly discussed here. {Pink October}
Breast pain can be a pointer to any one of a long list of conditions and it is important that you please see a physician.

So do women who have had a fibroadenoma stand a higher risk of developing cancer later on in life? The answer is 'not really'. To understand whether there is a link between fibroadenomas and breast cancer, we must first understand how either condition comes about.

Breasts are made up of lobules (milk-producing glands) and ducts (tubes that carry milk to the nipple), which are surrounded by glandular, fibrous supporting tissue and fatty tissue. Fibroadenomas are formed when the supporting structure of the breast (connective tissue) and ducts grow over the lobule and form a solid lump.
It is believed that this tendency for the supporting tissue to form lumps is caused by the fluctuating levels of hormones in a woman's body during her monthly cycle. Early in the cycle the female sex hormones are at a resting level and the breasts are also at their resting size. As the cycle progresses the body produces more and more sex hormones and these cause the breast to remodel and change in shape and size. As the cycle ends the hormonal levels drop off to normal and the breast also returns to its normal size. This increase and decrease and increase and decrease happens over and over again over many months and years and in some women who are particularly susceptible, this consistent modelling and remodelling of the breast tissue is what leads to the lump formation.

There are two broad categories of fibroadenomas. Simple Fibroadenomas are mainly just connective tissue cells that clump together to form a lump in the breast while in Complex Fibroadenomas certain factors may cause the lump to become calcified or have other different kinds of cells in them apart from connective tissue and may have cysts in their centre.

On the other hand, for breast cancer to develop in any woman there must be cell damage and DNA mutation. This cell damage can be as a result of radiation, or foods or chemicals or even hormones. Every cell has a life span. It stays alive for a specified period of time after which it must die. Before it dies it will divide into daughter cells who will take over its function. So for example, before a cell in your eye dies, it would have made daughter cells who will continue its 'seeing' function after it is gone. When a cell gets damaged it can no longer carry out its intended function and so it is removed by the body's 'police' so as to keep the whole tissue healthy and working at optimal level. Sometimes however a damaged cell may evade the body's police and can go undetected, especially in tissues where there is a very rapid turnover of cells. These damaged cells can then go ahead and form daughter cells who go ahead and form other daughter cells. The resulting mass of abnormal cells is called a cancer. (Please note that cancer formation is a complex multi-layered process. I have over simplified here for the purpose of comparison only)

From the above it is easy to see that by and large, there is NO connection between a fibroadenoma and breast cancer per sė and almost all women with a simple fibroadenoma will NOT progress to have breast cancer.

That said however, researchers have found that even though the processes that cause a fibroadenoma to form is significantly different from those that cause cancer, there may be a very small increase in the chance of developing cancer in women who have had complex fibroadenoma. This is because the conditions that may allow a simple fibroadenoma progress to a complex one are similar to those that can encourage damaged cell proliferation. It is important to reiterate that the process of cancer formation is complex and multifactorial and this similarity is only one of many steps that can lead to possible cancer formation.

As to getting married as soon as you can, I do not see how this would make any difference. Fibroadenomas are hormone dependent and the only realistic way to reduce the likelihood of them occurring is to reduce the hormonal levels. This is why as a woman gets older and as her hormonal levels begin to drop, the number of fibroadenomas also reduce in equal proportion. Studies have shown that the peak age of patients who have fibroadenomas is 30 after which the numbers begin a steady decline. So if you are not in a serious and committed relationship, please don't rush out to marry the next guy that says hello. Doctors Orders!

All the best with everything

Warm regards,
Dr. Craig

Women should Support Women! GEED holds 2nd Conference on Women in Government & Politics

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 02:00 AM PDT

GEED Conference on Women in Government and Politics 2014 - BellaNaija - June2014040

The 2nd International Conferences on Women in Government and Politics held on Thursday 5th June 2014 at the Wheatbaker Hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The conference which concluded with calling on African women to support their fellow African women in order for them to succeed in politics; was organised by the Winihin Jemide Series, and chaired by H.E Joseph Habineza (High Commissioner of the Republiuc of Rwanda to Nigeria).

Themed - A Model for Change: Gender Quotas and Expanding, the conference provided a platform for high-level dialogue on gender quota systems and a model for enhancing the participation of women in government and politics. The conference also  observed that despite the adoption of gender quota systems by some governments to ensure increased female participation in government and politics, women still face many obstacles in ascending to key roles in government.

At the end of the conference, the group stressed for affirmative action, advocacy, education and gender studies as well as legal instruments.

This year’s Conference participants were drawn from advocacy groups, government agencies, development partners, social media influencers, students, the diplomatic community and the media.

Participants noted that women face many obstacles ascending to key elective positions in politics, and therefore called for more structured, coordinated and institutionalized support for women within political parties. It is not enough that political parties create an office called "women leader" and use the occupant of the office to canvass the votes of women without giving them opportunities to occupy other key positions.

In conclusion, women groups were urged to offer more support to women aspiring to hold public office. The perception the women do not support fellow women who aspire to hold public office continues to threat increased female participation in politics and should be addressed. Women stand a better chance of winning if they support each other.

Smart Money with Arese: The Debt Conundrum

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 01:50 AM PDT

'Neither a borrower or lender be' – Shakespeare

We've all been there! You lend money to a friend who is supposedly in 'need' and you get burnt! Their attitude becomes so belligerent that you start to believe the saying that 'no good deed goes unpunished'. Then somewhere down the line you are caught in the same situation and another friend asks to borrow money, you are torn between your need to 'help' and be considered good person and the fear that you may never get your money back.

So as I got older and the financial responsibility of being an adult got real, I realized that there is an opportunity cost for every Naira I spend. Therefore I had to think carefully about lending money that I may never get back. So I developed a new policy.

As a rule I never lend friends money! It sounds mean but it's honest. If a friend is in need you must first determine whether this problem is an actual problem or not and then calculate how much you can afford to give them by way of a 'charitable donation' towards this problem. It must be money you can afford to forget about. So 'paying your debt for Brazilian hair' or paying your travel agent for a ticket to London cannot be the opportunity cost for my daughter's diapers.

I find that a lot of emphasis is often placed on the perils of bad debt for the debtor and not a lot is placed on the impact a bad debt can have on the lender. There are numerous stories of people who have borrowed money they had set aside for their children's school fees to their brother who is in 'need' with the hopes that they will pay back and when the loan goes bad, they run into financial difficulty. Although culturally, we are geared towards helping others, its important to be discerning when it comes to making decisions about who to lend to and why you are lending them money. (There are some exceptions to the rule, some people have real problems!)

So here are some tips on how to identify people you should never lend money to and what we can learn from their bad debt habits.

3 ways to spot a perpetual 'onigbese'! (constant debtor) and what you can learn from their mistakes.

They think debt = free money!
Bad debtors generally don't have a healthy respect for other people's money. When its time to borrow money their problems are always more important than your own but when its time to pay back you'll hear statements like 'is it not just N100, 000'.

Their bad debt habits usually transcend the individual level. These are the sort of people who will borrow money from a bank to start a business, use their uncle's land as collateral and then spend the money buying a luxury car, renting a flat in Ikoyi and building a tab in all the 'it bars' in Lagos. This typically happens because they start spending their profits before they have even started the business. Then when the business fails as a result of misuse of debt, and default charges on the loan start to pile up because of their disregard for other people's money the consequences become the responsibility of the owner of the collateral and the bank.

What to learn from this: If you borrowed money to grow a business, then by all means grow a business! Don't convince yourself that buying a luxury car will somehow help increase your profits because if you ask the average Nigerian entrepreneur what their no 1 challenge is, the answer is almost always 'lack of access to capital'. However, a good percentage of the lucky few who manage to convince a bank to loan them money for their business misuse it because they have the wrong attitude to debt.

They drive more expensive cars than their landlords.
People with bad debt habits will typically go into debt buying things their income cannot support. They will borrow money to purchase big-ticket items that don't appreciate in value and most likely can't cover the cost of the debt over time. For example, Toyin drives a N20m car and is still paying off her car loan but doesn't own her own home so she still pays rent to her landlord. A car is an asset. Granted! But it is a depreciating asset, which means it begins to lose value as soon as you drive it. Therefore it doesn't make sense to go into debt to acquire a car your current income cannot support.

What to learn from this: Debt can be a useful tool to attain financial success but how you use it matters. Wealthy people use debt as a tool to leverage their investments and grow their cash flows but poor people use debt to buy things that make rich people richer. Only borrow to acquire an asset that will appreciate in value.

They haven't paid salaries but they are on holiday in Dubai.
People with bad debt habits think their WANTS supersede the NEEDS of others. So for example, they think Wasiu the driver's salary can wait for another few months when he most likely has obligations of his own (children's school fees, transportation and food costs) but they are eating out every weekend and buying things they can probably afford to put on the back burner till after they've paid their staff.

What to learn from this: A real boss guarantees his team eats (ask Rick ross). So if you haven't had money to pay your domestic staff for 2 months but you are buying business class tickets to Dubai and eating at 'Spice' every weekend. God is watching you in 3D!

The President has assured him that his demands will be considered.” claimed a source.

The news comes after reports that he got a $260,000 pay for the World Cup.

Yes, Kayden you definitely got it.

It’s moments like this that makes us appreciative of the simple things of life – like walking.

A video of 2-year-old boy amputee Kayden Elijah Kinckle walking for the first time has gone viral with over 179,000 views in less than a week.

Kayden was born with Omphalocele, a rare condition which caused him to be born with his organs outside his body.

That was unfortunately not the only challenge, while in his mother’s womb, his feet was tangled on the umbilical cord and pinned under his mother’s pelvic bone.

Kayden was born with a deformity and had to undergo surgery to amputate his legs in January.

In the clip, we can see Kayden using a walker to walk with his prosthetics for the first time in a hallway. His mother comes to help him out when he almost falls, but he kept repeating, “I got it! I got It!”
