Touching True Story! "I played dead to survive"-Boko Haram survivor shot in the face tells his story

Ikenna Nzeribe was the sole survivor after assassins from Boko Haram stormed his Nigerian church in 2012, just 60 miles from where the jihadists last month abducted more than 200 girls.In an interview with CNN,

He told his sad yet triumphant story
The church massacre remains vivid for Nzeribe three years later — as are the scars on his face, neck and arm.The Muslim extremists fired shots into the air and shouted "Allah Hu Akbar," or God is great.
Nzeribe and 13 other Christians hit the floor.
They were mourning how Boko Haram earlier had killed three fellow Christians, but now Boko Haram was coming for them.The masked gunmen shot the 13 worshippers in the head, fatally.Now it was Nzeribe's turn.

"As soon as I saw the man, I knew it was over for me.The only thing I could do was say a last prayer, which was 'Blood of Jesus cover me.And that was it for me.

Nzeribe, a handsome banker, was shot in the face with an AK-47 assault rifle, blowing away his jaw, lips and part of his tongue.He faked death — "until they finished,"He bled profusely.

"I would say I died in the process,But God brought me back to life."

Rescuers took him to a local hospital in Mubi, a suburban area in northeastern Nigeria where he was part of a Christian minority and where the mass shooting in church occurred.He was later flown to London, where surgeons reconstructed his face.

Nzeribe recalled looking in the mirror for the first time post-surgery.What he saw was "a very different person," Nzeribe said, shaking his head. He stopped the interview, wiping away the tears and finding composure after long breaths.

A zigzagging scar runs up Nzeribe's chin to his upper lip. His mouth is even more disfigured, but at least he can talk, in soft tones. And he has a great laugh, though he can't smile.
He's had more than a dozen surgeries, with more pending. He's now recovering in Houston, where he receives treatment and lives with his wife and their baby, joining a Nigerian immigrant community whose residents find the climate similar to their native country's. His attorney, Frank C. Onyenezi, is working on Nzeribe's immigration status.

"We've come a long way," Nzeribe said of his surgeries and reconstructed face.

He's flattered to hear how he appears younger.
"It gives me confidence," he said of his surgically reconstructed face. "It gives me hope."
A devout Christian whose tale has been publicized in the religious press, he said has forgiven the gunmen of Boko Haram, whose mass abduction of Nigerian schoolgirls has outraged the international community.

"The first thing I did was to forgive them.Had they known better, they couldn't do that."

But Nzeribe isn't naïve: He is warning the world about how Boko Haram and its leader, Abubakar Shekau, commit atrocities with impunity.

"Everything he says he will do, he does them.It gives them a sense of fulfillment and makes them want to do more.Just like al Qaeda, they are very, very destructive.

He now prays for the kidnapped 276 girls, still missing in Nigeria

Actor Jide Kosoko's daughter, Sola had a recent chat with Punch and talked great length about her father. See below:

How was growing up with your father like?

My growing up was fun. It was real fun. My father was always going on locations because he had been acting before I was born. But anytime he was around, we were always happy because we knew he would lavish us with gifts and pamper us. He made sure we enjoyed ourselves. He usually took us to Amusement Park and Domino Stores in Lagos.

Did your father influence your interest in acting?

Yes, my father influenced my interest in acting. He asked me to feature in one of his movies titled Olorire in 2001, though I had been acting with him since 1999. I was initially unhappy that he asked me to act in his film because, then, I was more interested in gaining admission into a university. But he advised me that acting would not affect my education and that education also should not affect my interest in acting. I reluctantly accepted and that was the movie that shot me into limelight.

How do you feel acting with your father?

I have been acting with him since I was young. The only time I fidget on set is when I am not getting a particular role well or when I am being corrected two or three times. But apart from that, whenever I am on set with him, I feel happy. He is my father and I used to live with him. It is always a great experience acting with him. I am close to him and each time I am with him on set, I feel I am acting with just another actor and not my father.

What kind of man is he?

He is a very simple and straightforward person. Many people in the entertainment industry know that he is a man who does not hide his feelings when someone offends him. He likes playing games on his laptop. In fact, when you see him concentrating on his laptop you will think he is very busy with some documents. But when you move closer, you will discover that he is playing games. He also does same on his phones.

What ideals did you learn from him?

I have learnt a lot from him. He knows a lot about the profession. Before I started professional acting, we used to do many things together that were acting related. Whenever we were casting, he would ask us to suggest names and tell us why a certain person could not act a particular role. He would give reasons why he preferred another person to play such role. I am a producer and whenever I am casting, I always use the ideas I have learnt from him. His simplicity amazes me. I have learnt from him to be humble always. He takes life easy. For instance, if I am working on something and it is giving me a tough time, I will abandon it to concentrate on other things. When I was doing the production of one of my films, we could not shoot because one of our cast disappointed us and it also rained heavily. It nearly took two days but when my cast and crew saw the way the rest of us were playing with my father; they relaxed. I felt I should not stress myself because of the situation. I relaxed because I saw the way my father was playing and chatting. That is the same way he handles his job too. He does not take it as a do-or-die thing.

How sociable is he?

My father is very sociable. He attends parties. In the entertainment, we are like one big family. One does not need to know the other before honouring the latter's invitation to an event. He always attends social events of his colleagues or younger artists except he is not available.

How close are you to him?

We are very close. We are so close to the extent that I tell him things one will not expect a daughter to tell her father. We discuss intimately. In my career as an actress for instance, if I am planning any production, he will be informed ahead of time. He will know the day I am starting and when I will be ending it. I have lost my mother. It is him I have and I cannot hide anything from him. Even now when I am married, I still confide in him.

Is there any challenge being the daughter of a popular actor?

Yes, there is the challenge of having to comport oneself properly at all times. I also have to always remember the daughter of who I am. He always tells his children to behave well. He advises us to always do things that will promote the name he has been building for many years. I always try to stay within limit and behave well at all times. It is not easy because of the profession I am in but I strive to be the best I can be all the time.

Did he ever visit you when you were in the university?

Yes, he did but he did not tell me he was coming the day he visited. It was on a Sunday and I was in church. He went to my hostel and my neighbours told him I went to church. He asked for the location of my church and came there to look for me. When he arrived, they knew who he was looking for and the ushers came to call me. He told me he was coming from a trip and felt he should see me.

Has your father's name attracted favours to you?

Yes, I have received many favours because of who my father is. His name has opened a lot of doors for me. There are some places I get to that after introducing myself,some people will ask me if I am related to Jide Kosoko. If know that I need my father's name in such a place, I will not hesitate to quickly say he is my father. I may not even be recognised as an actress but upon mentioning his name, I will be well attended to. The old and young generation of actors and actresses respect him. Even when I want to quietly do what I intend to do, the attention and support I get when they know I am Jide Kosoko's daughter often surprises me.

How did he discipline any child who erred?

My father does not know how to discipline a child. The best he does is to handle any child who misbehaves over to someone who can discipline such a child. When we were young, he would hand us over to our uncles whenever we did something wrong. Each time they came on a visit, he would use the opportunity to tell them that we misbehaved. He does not like spanking his children. He has a soft spot for children. I cannot remember the day he beat me. But he likes talking to any erring child. He would sit us down as children and tell us what we should do and what we should not do. At times, he would preach and pray or ask one of us to preach before going to sleep.

Did you enjoy preferential treatment from your lecturers and colleagues by virtue of who your dad is?

I am always myself anywhere I am. I don't put up the attitude of 'I am JideKosoko's daughter' anywhere I go. Even when I became an actress, I remain humble as I am. When I was in the university, I did not take advantage of the fact that I am an actress or my father is a popular actor. I did what other students were required to do normally and did not influence anything. I never thought then that I should seek preferential treatment because I was already a known actress.

What are the values your father cherishes?

Like I said earlier, he is a very simple man. His humility is great. Sometimes, he would want to take a bike from one place to the other and we would remind him that he could not do so because of his status. He would be wondering why he could not do so. But that is what stardom has done to him. He is somebody that likes doing things in a simple way.

How does he maintain peace with his wives?

The children are not always aware of disagreement between him and his wives. They settle that in the bedroom. My father is very mature. He knows how to ensure peace in his house. There has been no tough misunderstanding in his house except for minor disagreements noticeable among mature couples.

How do you feel being his daughter?

I feel honoured by God. I feel really good. I thank God for putting me in such a family. I know that a lot of people would want to be in my position and I thank God for giving me such a family.

How does he relax?

He likes relaxing by watching English or Yoruba movies.

What is his best food?

He likes white rice and croaker fish.

What are his favourite sports?

I am not sure he has any liking for any sports but when we were young, he used to engage in relay races with us in our compound. I think it was because of his affection for children that made him run with us in those days.

How does he like to dress?

My father likes English and native attire. He buys a lot them. He gives many out too and that is why each time he gives some out, he buys more to replace them.

What is his favourite drink?

He likes water. It is not that he does not drink at all but it is in moderation.

What is his schedule like?

He is extremely busy, always attending to one thing or the other.

According to reports,

The former minister is seriously sick and needs to be flown to India possibly tonight as a matter of urgency. Efforts are currently being made by officials of the foreign affairs ministry to secure an Indian visa for her as soon as possible because her doctor says any delay might be risky.

It will be recalled that Mrs Akunyili has been sick for a while, but showed up at the on-going conference in Abuja where she thanked those who stood by her and said she was getting better. Please let's say a word of prayer for her.

Music & Business mogul, P Diddy receives honorary doctorate from Howard University! [PHOTOS]

You can call him Dr. Combs.

Rap and music mogul Sean Combs electrified Howard University's Class of 2014 on Saturday with a commencement speech that was thoughtful, funny and, surprisingly, sentimental.

"Throughout my life, I have rushed through some of my great moments," he told the crowd, clearly savoring the occasion. "I promised myself if I ever reached this moment I would take my time."

That's right folks — the man of many monikers — Sean John, Puff Daddy, P. Diddy and very briefly, Swag, has added a new one, now that he has an honorary doctorate from Howard University. Dr. Diddy? Perhaps on informal occasions. But more formally, please call him Dr. Combs.

"Only this family could take one of its sons who already had three name changes and give him a fourth — Dr. Sean Combs."

Dressed in full graduation regalia, complete with gold tassel on his black cap, Combs told the audience that enrolling at Howard changed his life. And although he left the university before graduating, he never forgot his Howard family.

"It's good to be home," he said. "I am humbled to be in such great company."

Combs's address marks the beginning of a busy commencement season in the region. American University, the University of the District of Columbia and Shenandoah University were among those also holding commencement ceremonies Saturday. St. John's College and the College of William and Mary are scheduled to hold their ceremonies Sunday.

Saturday also was a special — but bittersweet day at the University of Mary Washington, where Rebecca J. Ericson and Robin Ericson, the parents of a senior at the university, took the stage to accept a diploma on his behalf. Robert Ericson, 22, died April 18 from complications related to epilepsy. Ericson was an environmental science major and graduate of Fairfax's W.T. Woodson High school. The university has created a memorial fund in his honor.

At Howard, the controversy over the selection of Combs as a graduation speaker seemed forgotten in the excitement of the day. Some students had been unhappy that the entertainer and philanthropist had been selected; he left Howard before getting a degree.

"I know there was a lot of drama because he didn't graduate," said graduate Katherina Brown, 21. "But he was funny and entertaining and kept a smile on our faces."

Brown said Combs's personal story and success demonstrates that people can take different paths but still be successful. And, Brown noted, Combs did send a strong message about the importance of education.

Combs himself acknowledged that he was an unconventional choice to speak at a university graduation. (He had asked fans via Instagram for help in crafting his address.)

Turning toward the members of the university's board of trustees with whom he shared the stage, he quipped that they probably had never heard a commencement speech like his.

But he added with a grin, "It's time to evolve."

Despite his success, Combs said there have been times when he wished he'd had a degree.

"If I didn't leave school early, I would have been more prepared," he said, recalling moments in board rooms when he wished he'd completed that economics course and memos that would have been more polished had he finished his studies.

In the 1990s, when most of his friends were graduating from Howard, he'd been fired from his first job as talent director at Uptown Records, his girlfriend was 81 / 2 months pregnant, and he had just bought a house in Arizona that he could not afford.

He said he could have given up and let the darkness swallow him. Instead, "I had to decide to be my own light."

He added:

"One day, you're going to be sitting in the dark like I was, thinking, 'What am I going to do?' In that moment, I want you to remember the power in you."

"Nobody is going to take you to the front of the line — you need to push to the front of the line," he said.

While Combs received much of the attention Saturday, four others also received honorary degrees. CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, PepsiCo Chairman and chief executive Indra K. Nooyi, jazz legend Benny Golson and one of the country's premier organ transplant surgeons, Clive O. Callender, a professor at Howard's school of medicine, were also honored At Last! IGP’s son Jamyl Abubakar Narrates how he escaped death in yesterday’s IRS plane crash! [PHOTOS]

Pilot Jamyl Abubakar, son of Nigeria's Inspector General of police, narrowly escaped death on Saturday, May 10, after his IRS plane crash-landed at Niger Republic.
The aircraft, Fokker 100, belonging to IRS airlines crash-landed yesterday night around 7:30pm in Niger Republic on its way back to Nigeria after C (maintenance) checks.
The two people on-board the aircraft, the pilot and co-pilot, survived the crash.

When the Police Boss was contacted, he confirmed the incident, saying he was full of gratitude to God for preserving the life of the pilot and his son, the co-pilot.

Jamyl had on May 8th tweeted photos of the brand new looking 5N-SIK plane after a test flight.
He excitedly announced it was the best looking aircraft he had seen.

Boko Haram abducts DPO’s wife, two kids..Bombs bridge linking Borno & Adamawa!

Gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram terror group, on Saturday, have blown up a bridge that links Borno and Adamawa states during an attack on Limankara, a village in Borno State, witnesses and security operatives said.

The gunmen also reportedly abducted the family of a police officer, including his wife and two children; before virtually destroying the village.

The incident, according to council officials in Madagali Local Government Area, caused over 3,000 persons to flee the village into neighboring communities.

Madagali, according to Premium Times, is officially in Adamawa State but borders Borno.

The police spokesperson for Adamawa, Othman Abubakar, however, explained that Limankara police station was not within the Adamawa police jurisdiction, but within Borno, saying he had not been briefed on the Madagali/ Limankara attack.

A resident told PremiumTimes on phone that the gunmen came with heavy arms and engaged the few soldiers in a shoot-out for hours, leading to casualty on both sides.

The source who would not want to be named for safety reasons said "they were really heavily armed when they came in the early hours of today; they also had an armored tanker with them. They burnt down many structures including that of the District Head; and we learnt they went away with the wife and two children of the District Police Officer (DPO). It was at the time they were leaving that they used explosives to blow off the bridge linking Borno and Adamawa state".

The destroyed bridge, PREMIUM TIMES gathered, serves as an alternate entry point to Borno State and also to Sambisa forest.

Many, including security officials, believe that the attack on the bridge could be a ploy to scuttle easy access of military troops to the area, where the kidnapped Chibok girls were believed to have been held.
