Posted: 14 Mar 2014 01:05 PM PDT  Nigerian soldiers battled Boko Haram members early this morning in Maiduguri after members of the dreaded sect attempted to seize Giwa Barracks located in the city. This time, the soldiers came out on top as they succeeded in killing many members of the Islamic sect. Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade released a press statement earlier today explaining what was going on... "Pockets of terrorists apparently in a move to boost their depleted stock of fighters this morning attacked a military location in Maiduguri with a view to freeing their colleagues who are being held in detention. The attack has been successfully repelled with heavy human casualty on the terrorists. Some of the victims of the terrorists' fired in their efforts to break into the detention facility, included those they came to rescue. Many of the terrorists and their weapons have been captured. Four soldiers were wounded and are being treated. Hot pursuits by land and air operations are ongoing along with cordon and search of surrounding localities."   TOP STORIES

[PHOTO] Posted: 14 Mar 2014 10:36 AM PDT  The fate of a kidnapped radio presenter based in Port Harcourt hangs in the balance as his abductors demand N10m ransom from his family, PunchNg writes Uneasy calm prevails in Rivers State, after the forceful abduction of a popular radio presenter, Anthony Akatakpo, aka Diplomatic Akas Baba, by unknown gunmen on Thursday. Akatakpo, who works with Wazobia FM, was kidnapped from his residence in Rumuekini, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. Eye witness accounts say that the kidnappers, who were about 12 in number, shot the radio presenter in the leg before taking him away in his private Mitsubishi Endeavor Sport Utillity Vehicle with registration number LSD 871 CM at about 3 am. Although no contact was established between the kidnappers and their victim's family, they left a message for Akatakpo's pregnant wife instructing her to pay them a ransom of N10m or risk having him killed. Investigation by our correspondent showed that the kidnappers also stole wristwatches and other personal belongings from their victim's home before abducting him. A source close to the family told e-Punch that the operation lasted for one hour in Akatakpo's residence, which is situated within a developing area in Obio/Akpor LGA. The source said though the victim did not resist the kidnappers, one of them went on to shoot him in the leg. E-Punch gathered that Akatakpo, whose whereabouts is still unknown, and his family had moved into the house a few months before the incident. Describing the incident, Mrs. Candy Akatakpo said, "Our house is located in a developing area and that was why the kidnappers operated for about one hour without any challenge" However, she appealed to her husband's abductors to release him unconditionally. Also, a statement by the management of Steam and Globe Broadcasting and Communications Limited, owners of Cool FM, Wazobia FM and Nigeria Info condemned the incident. The statement, signed by the organisation's Head of Stations, Aduratomi Bolade, reads, "Akas Baba was beaten and shot in the leg by the kidnappers in the presence of his children and wife, despite cooperating with them. "He was thereafter whisked away in his Mitsubishi Endeavor SUV with Registration Number LSD 871 CM. This very violent act still leaves Akas Baba's family in great trauma." The Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin, who visited the victim's residence, promised Akatakpo's family that the police would do everything within its power to ensure the unconditional and early release of the ace presenter. "We sympathise with you at this difficult moment. We feel your pain and anguish. Madam, I promise you that my men will do everything humanly possible to make sure that your husband is returned to you unharmed within the shortest time possible," Ogunsakin said. Meanwhile, the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the State Police Command has invited some relatives and neighbours of the victim for questioning. TOP STORIES

[PHOTO] Posted: 14 Mar 2014 10:07 AM PDT  A Houston-area father who found a 17 year old boy inside his daughter's room around 2:20am fatally shot and killed him The father, who was not identified, was notified by one of his children that there was someone in his 16-year-old daughter's room. He crept into the room and found her in bed with the boy. The father who had a gun then told the boy to identify himself but his daughter reportedly told her father that she did not know the teen and that the two were not in bed. The father said he told the teen not to move, but reportedly saw the teen reach for something, at which point police say the father opened fire. The teen did not have a gun. His daughter later confessed that she did indeed know the teen. Shebi all of dem stayed in London, while some of them, like Banky W, went to America? But they all rushed back to Nigeria because it is here they could make such money. Of course, in America, they will not get paid $10, 000 for a show. Even some of the Americans like 50 Cent, the highest they will get for a show in their country is $50, 000. But they get paid $500, 000 here. If you could make such money here, you don't have the right to stand up and say as a rapper, your parent will never be proud of you. Urmila Sharma, 28, gave birth to conjoined twins at Cygnus JK Hindu Hospital in Sonipat, Haryana, in northern India, yesterday morning. The baby, born via C-section and weighing 7lbs 7oz, has two heads, two necks and two spines but only one body. The baby girl, yet to be named, is under close observation in the neonatal intensive care unit, though doctors fear her chances of survival are slim.  TOP STORIES

Saharareporters could not ascertain if the explosions led to deaths or destruction of any kind. But our sources states that the three explosions were heard across the city. Gunmen stormed the Fauri area of Maiduguri, a hotbed of the Boko Haram insurgency, after crossing a river on the fringes of the city SaharaRepoprters learnt that fighters from the Islamist sect Boko Haram are attempting to bomb and take over a major military base known as "Giwa barracks" in Maiduguri.
