| Gov. Oshiomhole Signs Death Penalty Law For Kidnapping!! Posted: 18 Oct 2013 11:44 AM PDT Edo state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has signed into law, the bill which prescribes death penalty to kidnappers. The law which is an amendment of the Edo state kidnapping law also prescribes that any premises used by kidnappers will be demolished. Governor Oshiomhole has recently been in a dilemma on whether the death penalty should apply to kidnappers who commit murder during the act and those who do not. Today, he declared that the death penalty applies to all acts of kidnapping whether it involved murder or not, while calling on youths to desist from the criminality as an excuse for unemployment. Some of the suspects paraded by the Police in Edo state earlier this week may face the death penalty if found guilty of the crime courtesy of the Bill just signed into law by the governor. The Governor appealed to parents and guardians to be wary of the activities of their wards as criminality should not be an excuse for unemployment. The governor also assured that no special tribunals will be set up to try cases of kidnapping, as that is a feature of the military era. This he said to relieve concerns over the slow judicial system in Nigeria. It will be recalled that Human Rights lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN) urged government to grant amnesty to kidnappers, after being a victims of these kidnappers whiule on his way to his home country in Edo state Channels tv | ||
| Video club owners assaults and beat up Nollywood Veteran Actor, Jide Kosoko Posted: 18 Oct 2013 09:35 AM PDT Meanwhile the President of VROAN, Kassim Olatunbosun aka Boe, has been declared wanted by his members and the police. He is accused of wanton embezzlement of public funds at his disposal. Kassim is said to have mismanaged the royalties for marketers and film producers that his members paid into the coffers of VROAN over the last two years. They also claimed that he refused to call for elections after staying in office for more than 10 years.According to information made known to NOLLYWOOD INSIDER, after a long meeting at the Cultural Center, Alausa, Ikeja, on Thursday October 10th, 2013, by his members and other concerned stakeholders, the enraged crowd besieged his Onipanu office calling on him to render account of his stewardship as VROAN's henchman. However, on sighting the crowd while he was having his weekly meeting with executives of the association, Kassim managed to scale over a high fence into oblivion. This was after Jide Kosoko and a few others had sustained injuries during a fight to apprehend Kassim. Jide Kosoko spoke further on the incident, "Actually, I am a member of the Board of Trustees of VROAN, and we had been getting several reports that the president of the association, Kassim aka Boe, has been in the office for close to 10 years. We have received several complaints that his tenure has since lapsed, and that there should have been an election, but he insisted on staying. This is coupled with other atrocities of his, so the BOT had to invite him, but he refused to come to any of the meetings on several occasions. He goes about with thugs with dangerous weapons, most of whom are not owners of video clubs. ''When his members wanted to make trouble with him, we said no that they should leave the matter to us, the BOT. I advised him personally, but he refused to yield to advice. He then wrote a letter saying he will hold elections in December which angered his members. The BOT then took some policemen to his office, only for us to get there and find thugs all over the place. They thereafter got violent with us, and one of them threw a bottle of water at me; using charms to threaten us." Meanwhile, JideKosoko disclosed that the matter is now with the Nigerian Police Zone 2, Lagos. culled from Nigeriafilms | ||

| (MUST READ) Yoruba, Igbo mistrust cause of underdevelopment – Adebanjo! Posted: 18 Oct 2013 11:42 AM PDT ELDER STATESMAN and stalwart of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has urged the Igbo and Yoruba ethnic nationalities to join forces and develop the country, arguing that recurring mistrust between them has stunted Nigeria's socio-economic development. According to the octogenarian, if the late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe and Chief Obafemi Awolowo had closed ranks, collaborated and ruled Nigeria, the country would have been an oasis of development. He spoke yesterday in Lagos at the presentation of a 771-page book: "The Untold Story of the Nigeria-Biafra War," written by Dr Luke Nnaemeka Aneke. Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Ahmadu Bello – founding fathers of Nigeria The major mistake Said Adebanjo, who is in full support of ongoing efforts to hold a national conference: "The major blunder the Igbos and the Yorubas made was that they misinterpreted friendship. I, Azikiwe and Awolowo had come together, will we be where we are today? So, that was the major mistake that we made. If Azikiwe was Prime Minister of Nigeria then and Awolowo was Minister of Finance, where do you think Nigeria will be today? All the wonders of what happened in the West would have been replicated in the entire country, with such collaboration. But, it was never so." He continued: "The history of the war has to be told very honestly. There has been a lot of prejudices here and there. And a lot of friends have been made enemies all because of book presentations. The meticulous way, intelligent manner and chronological order that the author put the book is commendable. The author has been able to move from the trend whereby previous authors make unnecessary comments in their books at a time we ought to ensure that Nigeria is united and the various ethnic nationalities live in oneness. This is not a time when we should be emphasizing what separates us. At this point, I want to direct your attention to what is captured in the book, how long the Yorubas and the Igbos have been coming together to ensure the unity and progress of Nigeria. When we discuss this, we have to talk about the crisis of 1963. When the crisis came, the President at that time, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe waded in to ensure there was peace in the West. "I must also mention that we must not allow minor things to separate us because we committed a lot to keep this nation one, especially the Igbos and the Yoruba. Therefore, the Igbos and the Yorubas have no cause to quarrel. We have our differences, so, I'm also not oblivious of the fact that the tongue and the mouth at times do quarrel. In those days, in spite of the fact that Zik was a non-Yoruba, he was very popular in the West. You hear Zik this, Zik that. In fact, when the Football Club of Azikiwe is going to play in Apapa, we all thronged to that place to watch the team play. But, we must remember where we are coming from and go back to the old times. In view of what is happening in the country today, let us learn our lessons. "It was surprising to some people when President Jonathan recently sued for a national conference because of his earlier arguments that there was no need for it. According Chief Obafemi Awolowo, only an unreasonable man will see a superior argument and not change his mind. In case many of you don't know, Azikiwe during his time sued for one Nigeria based on Unitary government, The likes of Awolowo preached Federalism, which Azikiwe later got convinced and in 1956 said that federalism was imperative. "Federalism gives room for each region to develop at their own pace. After the 1956 conference, it was then Azikiwe and others were convinced that Federalism was imperative for there to be a healthy competitiveness among the regions. The West established its own university; the East did the same and likewise the North. National conference is imperative On ongoing debates trailing national conference moves, he said: "Our unity in this country should be that of unity of purpose. We should not allow minor things to disunite us. That's why I'm grateful to the author in the way he has presented the book. It will make the young ones see the war from an unbiased perspective. Our unity should not be like that of a horse and its rider. That's why this national conference is imperative at this moment. And one thing previous governments had used to confuse Nigerians is that a national conference will disintegrate Nigeria and bring the sovereignty of the constitution to question. But come to think of it, is this present constitution ours? Even when Obasanjo was been sworn-in in 1999, he swore to uphold the tenets of the constitution. Which constitution, is it the constitution, which he doesn't know anything about the content? Even Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar himself said before the swearing-in that he doesn't know the content of the constitution. So, why do you want to tie us down with a constitution that you don't know the content? In fact let me say that the constitution that we had at independence was a better one because it preached that each region must be allowed to grow at their own pace. That was why the West had free education, the East had free education. Let us go back to that constitution. The sovereignty we all sue for should be that of the people." Jointly organised by Ndigbo Lagos, Aka-Ikenga and Lower Niger Congress, notable persons at the event included Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim (who was represented by his special adviser, Dr. Ferdinand Agu), Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (rtd), Chief Raymond Obieri, Professor Laz Ekwueme, Chief Fred Agbeyegbe, Igwe NP Iloeze, Engr Mike Uzoigwe, Mrs Nkechi, Chief Martins Agbaso, Professor Joe Ezeigbo and Kalu Onuma. Although, the event was meant to be a book launch, it became an avenue to rally the South and the Middle-Belt for President Goodluck Jonathan's proposed national conference, for which a presidential advisory committee has been set up to tinker out modalities on how to proceed. For instance, the Ijaw delegation was led by Chief TK Ogoriba, the Itsekiri delegation was anchored by Chief Fred Agbeyegbe and the Middle-Belt Forum was led by Abuga Onalo and the ceremony was chaired by Chief Ayo Adebanjo, who is from the South-West. Speaking at the event, Dr Agu said Nigerians must do the needful to ensure that the country does not experience another civil war. "Lamenting the massive destruction wrought on the polity by the war, he said:"It is our duty as a generation to ensure that, that history does not repeat itself… We need dialogue. Let's prepare our minds for national conversation. Let's hear one another out. We have many things to talk about. Without dialogue we are preparing for confrontation. We have a nation to build for ourselves and future generation." The Igbos have no problem with Yoruba — Anya In a welcome speech, the President General of Ndigbo Lagos, Professor Anya O Anya, said The book is a must read, as we are all aware that we have a young generation who don't know the history of this nation. Therefore, it's important that we make them conscious of history has been. We the old ones must remind the younger ones that the rules have changed, through a book like this. Before the war, the Igbos had no problems with the North or the West. But the Igbos were only standing up against the injustice meted against them. But the fact remains that we wouldn't have gone to the war. The major problems we have encountered in this time past, is that Nigeria has been in disrepair in the midst of plenty and governance don't face the welfare of the common people. It's unfortunate that Nigeria has the highest level of poverty and youth unemployment in the world. It's also sympathetic that I have never seen a nation like Nigeria where the people are dismissive and negative about their country. "Our politics is so bad that most politicians are never concerned about building the nation but what they can take out of the nation, even if they can take it from the pockets of others. Imagine, the North that has been at the helms of affairs in this country for over 40 years is engulfed in poverty and insecurity even till date. Their contradictions caused it. We might as well say that it serves them right, but should we allow them to continue this way? The answer is no, because should this continue, it will soon engulf the entire nation. From now on, the Igbos and other Nigerians should come together to build a greater and indivisible Nigeria. "Today, Jonathan out of pressure has bowed to National conference. Ironically, the earlier agitators for this conference are the ones saying no to it. This is why I say that our politics in this nation must change. It must no longer be the politics of nay saying. Reviewing the book, Dr Douglas Anaele passionately recounted the genesis of the war, pogrom against Biafran children, sacrifices made by white nuns and others during the war, how the war could have been averted and the role of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and General Yakubu Gowon and described the book as a 'window into the untold story of the Nigeria-Biafra war." He said if Awolowo had fulfilled his promise of having West Nigeria leave if East seceded, not joined Gowon to fight Biafra and used starvation as a weapon, the destruction would have been minimised. He also wondered why Nigeria did not reap from the technological know-how of Biafran scientists after the war if the Nigerian government did not hate the Igbos. Reacting to Anele's review, Adebanjo, and Awoist said: "There has been a lot of misinterpretation on the part played by Awolowo before the war. Let's not forget that during the war, Chief Awolowo went to see Ojukwu in Enugu, one of the things that is not on record is in fact, he went against the advice of Gowon and others. It was even said that he went to conspire with Ojukwu. Those who have confidential access to the report at that time will see what was written about Chief Awolowo, when he came back from the East. What happened then was he went to convince Ojukwu not to go to war. Let us stay here and settle these things amicably. Ojukwu assured Awolowo that he was not going to go to war, but two weeks later Ojukwu insisted that there must be war. That is the truth. Ladies and gentlemen, whether we like it or not, we are bound to live together, but I want you to imagine that until the starvation came, the war was on. Following the chronology of this book, Awolowo who was in Gowon's cabinet, who never wanted the war said, the best way to end this fratricidal war is to stop the food allocation going to the Biafra region, because he said that anything that must allow the war end must be done." | UNBELIEVABLE!! Saudi cleric gets 8 years in prison For Raping & Killing 5 Year-Old Daughter!! Posted: 18 Oct 2013 11:45 AM PDT An ultraconservative Muslim preacher in Saudi Arabia was sentenced to eight years in prison and 800 lashes for raping and beating his five-year-old daughter to death, official media said Tuesday. Fayhan al-Ghamdi, who often preached on television, was convicted of beating his daughter Lama with canes, burning her with electrical cables, crushing her skull and tearing off her nails. She was also raped repeatedly and died months later in a Saudi hospital. The kingdom follows a strict interpretation of Islam under which murder, drug trafficking, rape and armed robbery are capital crimes, with execution mostly by firing squad. The case of Lama caused a public outcry and brought to light sensitive issues surrounding the ambiguity of punishment for Saudi fathers found guilty of murdering their own children. Much less serious crimes often receive heavier punishment. Earlier this week, a Saudi court gave four young men sentences of between three to 10 years prison and 500 to 2,000 lashes for dancing naked in public in the city of Buraydah, north of Riyadh. The Saudi official news website Sabq reported that the hard-line Muslim preacher was not given a harsher sentence because Lama's mother accepted 1 million riyals, roughly $267,000, from her ex-husband as "blood money," allowed in litigation under Saudi law. The Egyptian mother, who acquired Saudi nationality through her ex-husband, was quoted in Arab Gulf-based media saying she is a poor single woman with no income. By accepting the money, she waived the right to demand retribution, or "qisas," against al-Ghamdi for the death of their daughter. It was not immediately known if she was pressured to accept the deal. Lama's mother told broadcaster Al-Arabiya that al-Ghamdi took their daughter from her for a two-week visit in 2011 to his home with his second wife and other children. Months went by and he refused to allow the mother to see her daughter. The mother wears a full face veil and her name was not revealed. Lama was then taken to a hospital, where she died in intensive care in late 2012. "I saw her and I swear to God I didn't recognize her," the mother told the news channel, describing the moment she saw her daughter's disfigured face and body in the hospital. "I felt there is no mercy among humans." "She was beaten from the head to the toe, all black and blue all over her body," the mother said. Al-Ghamdi had previously said he had been guided by God after having a temper during his adolescent years, although Lama's mother says otherwise. "He used to beat me for no reason and raise a knife to me," she told popular Saudi station Rotana Khalijia, adding that al-Ghamdi also did not provide basic household necessities. "A man who does not even give money to (feed) his own daughter is not a preacher," she said, adding that al-Ghamdi did not practice what he preached on television, taking drugs, drinking alcohol and sometimes breaking obligatory Muslims fasts. | SHOCKER!! Couple sell daughter for iPhone!! Posted: 18 Oct 2013 11:46 AM PDT A young Chinese couple are facing criminal punishment for "selling" their infant daughter and using the proceeds to buy an Apple iPhone, state media said Friday. Shanghai prosecutors have brought a case against them for human trafficking after they illegally put their third child up for adoption online and accepted money for the baby, the Liberation Daily reported. Investigators found the mother, whose full name was not given, used the money to buy an iPhone, high-end sports shoes and other goods, it said. Apple's products are wildly popular in China, where a teenager sold his kidney and used the funds to buy an iPhone and iPad in an incident widely reported last year. But the couple told police that they wanted the girl to have a better upbringing than they could afford, since they already had two children. "Giving away the child was not for obtaining benefits, but giving the child better guarantees," one said. Some Chinese, especially in rural areas, have a traditional preference for sons though reports did not say if the child's gender was also a factor in the case. Online commentary condemned the couple, though some used black humour to describe modern Chinese society and the quest for wealth. "So cold-blooded! These people do not deserve the right to be parents!" said Wangzhan1969 in a microblog posting. "This is good business — no capital, huge profit and no need to sell kidneys," said another posting. An official of the prosecutor's office handling the case expressed worry over "sensationalism" surrounding the affair but declined to comment further to AFP. Shanghai police could not be reached for comment. Reports did not give the amount the couple received for the child, but their online postings asked for 30,000 yuan and 50,000 yuan ($4,900 and $8,200). Apple last month launched the iPhone 5s, including a gold-coloured model, and the more budget-conscious iPhone 5c in China. Vanguard | ||

| Posted: 18 Oct 2013 06:51 AM PDT A wealthy Serbian bachelor has been posting pictures of himself in his mansion in the hope that his wealth will lure in a lady. And if his obvious opulence wasn't enough to tempt potential suitors, he has also donned a series of snappy outfits, including a pink dressing gown. In a note attached to the photos, the man who calls himself Don Milisav Juan Gonzales Brzi, says: 'To all unmarried ones who would like to spend their life by my side and within all the beauties of my home. ![]() 'Please look below at all the magic of my home that I have decorated with taste, perhaps just for YOU.' The bizarre snaps have been circulating on Croatian, Bosnian and Serbian websites and have since gone viral. In them the grey-haired singleton is seen standing awkwardly in his bathroom, 'relaxing' on a bed and kneeling in what appears to be a hallway. ![]() Mr Brzi claims to be 39-years-old, living in St Petersburg and looking for a much younger 16-20-year-old for a relationship and marriage. The Serb displays a clear love of the finer things in life, with everything from his bed to his bidet finished with gold trim. Artwork and painted frescoes decorate nearly every wall in his home, including in both of the huge bathrooms. ![]() Whoever takes up his offer will have to deal with the cold weather, as temperatures can plummet as low as -5C in winter. Perhaps the young lady in question could borrow one of Brzi's fur coats to keep warm in, as he appears to have several. Either the pictures were taken around Christmas-time, or Mr Brzi is slow to take his decorations down, as tinsel and baubles feature in the background of several shots. Despite appearing on Eastern European websites months ago, it is not known whether or not Mr Brzi ever found his dream nubile bride. It is difficult to image how he would have been unable to attract a partner given his dashing looks and dapper dress sense. | ||

| INCREDIBLE!!! ASUU rejects N600b offer!! Posted: 18 Oct 2013 05:02 AM PDT Varsity teachers remained adamant last night, saying their strike would go on, despite the government's shifting of its position. The strike has been on for four months. More cash has been pledged for projects on the campuses. Besides, the earned allowances due to the teachers have been increased from the initial N30 billion offer, which the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) rejected. The teachers are insisting on the 2009 agreement, which they say President Goodluck Jonathan was part of. Besides, they say, they do not trust the government. According to a circular by the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, Prof. Bolaji Aluko, to the staff of the school, quoted yesterday by the news website, Sahara Reporters, the government has pledged to spend N200 billion on the universities in the 2014 budget and the same amount annually for the next three to four years. This is in addition to the N100 billion already made available this year, but which ASUU has rejected. The government has also increased to N40 billion, as a first installment, funds for the payment of earned allowances to the striking lecturers – an improvement from the N30 billion previously released. On the earned allowances, Aluko said: "Government will top it up with further releases once universities are through with the disbursement of this new figure of N40 million. So, Vice-Chancellors are urged to expedite this disbursement within the shortest possible time using guiding templates that have been sent by the CVC," the circular said. Aluko said the latest development followed meetings on September 19 and Oct 11 of representatives of the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, led by its Chairman, Prof. Hamisu of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) and ASUU representatives led by its President, Dr.Nasir Fagge, with Vice-President Namadi Sambo and Minister of Education Nyesome Wike. A source in the Ministry of Education last night also confirmed that the meeting took place. "But the government decided to leave the announcement of the decision to the ASUU chiefs," the source said. It was gathered that Sambo urged ASUU to call off the strike, as he apologised for the "take-it-or-leave-it" comments credited to Minister of Finance Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala at the beginning of the strike. The Minister did not seem to have been involved in either meeting, perhaps as the government's way of soothing the feelings of the university teachers. Other points of agreement at the meetings include: •Project Prioritisation: Universities will now be allowed to determine their priorities and not be "rail-roaded" into implementing a pre-determined set of projects with respect to the NEEDS assessment. Decisions are not to be centralized; •TETFund Intervention: The government assured the teachers that the operations of the TETFund will not be impaired, and that the regular TETFund intervention disbursement to universities will continue, unaffected. So the NEEDS assessment capital outlays are in addition to regular TETFund intervention; •Project Monitoring: A new Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) for the NEEDS Assessment intervention for universities has been set up to take over from the Suswam Committee. The new one is under the Federal Ministry of Education and chaired by the Minister of Education. In addition, to build confidence and ensure faithful implementation and prevent any relapse as before, the Vice President will meet quarterly with the implementors to monitor progress. .Blueprint: ASUU was mandated to submit a blueprint for revitalising the universities to the Vice President. Prof. Aluko stated that a signed document will soon be issued to itemise the full issues on which the consensus was reached. But ASUU last night was unimpressed with the new offer. National Treasurer Dr. Ademola Aremu said the offer failed to meet the teachers' expectations. He said the offer falls short of the agreement signed with ASUU by the government. Aremu insisted that ASUU would not end the strike until the 2009 agreement is fully implemented by injecting N500 billion into the universities yearly to shore up the system's quality. Aremu, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone, said any offer below what is contained in the signed agreement, would amount to unilateral repudiation of an agreement the government willingly signed in 2009. According to the unionist, ASUU is not making any new demand, but a mere implementation of an agreement. He pointed out that the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by both parties in 2009 stated that the government would commit N1.5 trillion to the system in three years. He said: " Even if the Federal Government made that promise, it would be a unilateral repudiation of the 2009 agreement. By now, the government should have injected N500 billion. That amounts to N100 billion in 2012 and N400 billion in the current year. "As a matter of fact, any new commitment from the Federal Government is belated. Implementation of the agreement ought to have started before this year. I don't think there is any way we can trust this government, going by its past behaviour on this issue. "The mandate from our principal as at the last time we met was that we won't end the strike until the agreement is fully implemented. "We do not need promises again. What we need now is actual implementation. What if they do not release the funds again after making the promise? "It was this same Mr President that mid-wifed the agreement in 2009 when he was the Vice President. The MoU was in his custody. He studied the agreement well before asking then President Umaru Yar'Adua to sign it. We can't trust this government. | ||
