| Woman Arrested for pouring hot water on neighbor!! Posted: 12 Oct 2013 07:59 AM PDT  A business woman, Augustina Nicholas, 30, on Friday appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates' Court, Lagos, and charged with allegedly pouring hot water on her neighbour, Roseline Okujere. Nicholas, who lives at No. 13, Akinyemi Street, Ajah, was arraigned on a two-count charge of assault and causing grievous harm. The Prosecutor, Mr Austin Orji, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Oct. 5, at 10 a.m., at Akinyemi Compound, Ajah. Orji said: "The duo got into a heated argument which turned into a fight and in the process, Nicholas, who at the time was boiling water to prepare breakfast, poured it on her neighbour. "They had been arguing over a stone which the complainant used to support her kiosk where she sells recharge cards." The prosecutor told the court that Nicholas had removed the stone to support her grinding stone and promised to return it. "When she didn't return it, the complainant angrily went to pick her stone, which got Nicholas angry, and a fight ensued," he said. Orji said the offences contravened Sections 170 and 243 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011. The accused if convicted could be imprisoned for seven years. The accused pleaded not guilty. The Magistrate, Mrs Y.R. Pinheiro, granted bail to the accused in sum of 100,000 with one surety in like sum. She adjourned the case to Nov. 20, for mention. (NAN) Vanguard | ||||||||
| Posted: 12 Oct 2013 07:50 AM PDT  Mark Zuckerberg has bought the four houses surrounding his multi-million dollar home but he doesn't plan on knocking them all down to make one giant complex. Instead he will be renting it out to the current residents as he reportedly bought the homes to avoid a developer doing the same thing. 'The developer was going to build a huge house and market the property as being next door to Mark Zuckerberg,' a source told The San Jose Mercury News. The paper reports that this form of personal privacy came with a total price tag of $30million as he has spent less than a year buying up four different properties on his block.  The first of the four that he bought through a legal entity is located directly behind his house and then he got two more behind his house and one directly next door. That's twice the price the Facebook founder paid for his own home when he bought it for he and his then-girlfriend Priscilla Chan.  While he has no intention of staying in any of these new homes, he and his wife did purchase a pied a terre for themselves in one of San Francisco's priciest neighborhoods. The home that they live in full time- and the four that they now own surrounding it- is in the Crescent Park neighborhood in Silicon Valley and is less than a ten minute drive to Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park. That area is about 40 minutes outside of San Francisco, and now the couple owns a house in the heart of the city. Why is she not here today?She sent a message few days ago that she was not feeling fine, and might not make it to the event. However, she will be represented at the festival by the head of her foundation, Rita Marley Foundation.What's the financial implication of organising this festival?What's new in this year's Felabration?I think what will always be new is the enthusiasm of the crowd. The festival runs from Monday through Sunday. It kicked off last Monday with school debate. Wuri Modern College won the competition last year. The Felabration usually kicks off with school debate because we are trying to introduce new things other than music. There will be symposium where the likes of Femi Falana, SAN, will be in attendance. The festival will kick off properly next week Tuesday. It will run till Saturday and closes on Sunday.Is Bob Marley's son still going to make it to the festival?I think he's having problem with obtaining visa. He has agreed to come and the contract has been finalized. We are waiting for him to obtain his visa. If he succeeds, fine. We are expecting a lot of Afrobeat bands from America, Ghana and other African countries. Our local artistes such as Tuface, Kwam 1, Davido, Wizkid, Eedris and other superstars including myself will be on duty.Apart from finance, what other challenges are you encountering?I think the major challenges are finance and security. We would love a situation where we would pay the artistes handsomely and dictate the pace for them. But now, they dictate the pace for us. The artistes decide when and when not to perform on stage. Felabration bends to everybody's rules. The next thing is to get the museum working. Apparently, Lagos State government has purchased the piece of land beside the museum which we use as car park. But we are still looking for major sponsors that will drive the museum. We have big dreams that we want to put in place.With this year's Felabration coming up, would you say you have achieved the dream of setting up the festival?Definitely. We are all Nigerians and we know what it means to run a festival at that level for 13 years. I think we have to be applauded. It's a feat that hasn't been achieved in Nigeria. All the great festivals we know in Nigeria are no longer functioning. We have never heard any security challenges in the past 13 years. With the crowd of over 10,000 people attending the festival, I think we have to be commended. Now, Felabration is observed across the world, especially in major cities of the world. The event my sister, Yeni started has grown big and stronger.One would have thought that the Fela broadway show would have boosted the festival? Fela's biopic Aside Felabration, what is the family's stand on Fela's biopic being produced by an American company recently?I don't know about it. There are many things I don't know about. I know that they have been working on the biopic for the past five years.Andrew Dosumu, a British Nigerian director was chosen to direct the biopic and Nigerian international actor, Chiwenta Ejiofor is being touted to act Fela in the biopic?It is the same biopic that we are talking about. This is a biopic that has been in the making for about five years now. I'm sure you know it is not the kind of film that you can produce overnight. They have to capture the burning of the house, the soldiers…If they are going to do a movie of that magnitude, it's going to be a great movie. It is going to take time. They have been talking about this movie for ages now.Does the family have any plan to do that?No. We are only going to give them the license to do it. We have a legal team that deals with all of these things. My own duty as a member of the estate is to give the approval. I have signed the contract several years ago and I know, it will take another two to three years before this dream will materialize. I know that the first contract we signed for five years ought to be renewed if they have not completed the production of the film within the time frame.They started talking about the film when my father died but eventually the contract expired. So, they had to renew a new contract. This is because there is no money in the music business. That's why the family has been very lenient when discussing with all these people because we all know about piracy. Everybody is downloading Fela's music, so you have to be very understandable. We have a good legal team that handles all these stuffs for the family. Of course, we have to protect the integrity of the family Looking at it holistically, do you feel comfortable that a Nigerian who has practically lived abroad all his life is playing the role of Fela?I'm sure if they do a movie, it will be great. Now, let us look at the broadway show. Critics say that it was too Americanised. They did not want to show Fela's story from the Nigerian perspective. They wanted the American and the international market to understand the Fela story. See how Fela was misunderstood even when he went to the United States. It was after his death that people started evaluating his music. What he was doing? He married 27 wives in his lifetime, how dare he? This man was against feminism.? They gave him different kind of names. He was completely misunderstood because he wore pants, he smoked marijuana. He had issues. He had serious issues whether we liked it or not. At his death, people were celebrating him but in his lifetime, he was broke before he died.What they did was to tell the Fela story for the average international market to watch and understand it. If you did watch them, you would notice that the dancers could not dance the Afrobeat music. For you, the man was speaking American English. But you would have every reason to believe that the Fela you know was not being acted but if you look at it from the neutral perspective like you didn't know Fela, you would understand the story and even weep for him. The day I watched it, I cried. I cried because I knew where they were coming from and I saw the audience. Probably, they have not heard about Fela, the Americans were saying, it made them want to listen to his music to know more about Africa. It opened their minds to so many issues. Now, they are studying Afrobeat in many of the schools and universities in America, Germany, France, Sweden, Australia, everywhere. There are over 20 American bands playing Afrobeat at the moment. Over the years and given what is happening in the country today, will you say your father has been vindicated or misunderstood while he lived?I will answer in the affirmative. He was grossly misunderstood for a purpose because he saw corruption and he knew what corruption was going to do to the country; those involved in corruption wanted to get away with dictatorship and corruption which was what he was against. And because he used his own unconventional way of protesting, it didn't go down well with the authorities.Then the authorities controlled the media up to a point until after Daily Times, when other media houses started springing up because we have to remember that it was only government newspapers and TVs that we had then. So, the story was told from the government's perspective until The Punch, Vanguard and other magazines were established. Fela's story could be seen from another point of view.  But you are a different specie?Then, it is still these same Nigerians that were criticising this man and they know it. Let us look at our incumbent President. He was declared wanted by the EFCC when he was governor of Bayelsa State and you voted for him. That case was pending in court when Yar' Adua made him his Vice. Opposition parties should have objected to his selection. But they didn't. Again, his former boss late Yar ' Adua whom he served under had a seven point agenda. Where is it today? Jonathan promised that if anything happened to him that he would follow his footsteps. Has him followed his footsteps today? There are many things you have to understand as Fela's son. Did Nigerians not hear what Fela talked about? Are they not feeling the same pain that Fela felt when he was alive? Nigerians are still voting for the same corrupt politicians. Are you worried that government has not been able to honour your father after his death?Not at all. The people will always honour my father and he will always be celebrated worldwide. Even Lagos state has honoured him. Even if the family doesn't celebrate him, Fela has gone beyond the shores of Nigeria. As we speak, New York, Paris, England, Japan, Australia, New Zealanmd, China, Malaysia, among others still celebrate him.At over 50, some people say it seems you have become more sexually active?That is not true, I am no more sexually active. When you see a beautiful woman, when you reach my age and you have responsibility like myself, you will know what I am talking about. Before now, as a young man, you would want to go after her. There are many nights I go and sleep alone not because I don't have girlfriends or want a girlfriend, when I think of the responsibility I have in my life, I will immediately have a rethink.The women in my life also have responsibilities. I can tell you that the mothers of my children, we stay together, we are very serious. You could say we are husband and wife but I don't believe in marriage. I just don't understand why one man will say I pronounce you man and wife, in that case. I pronounce myself man and wife. I am very different from my father but in a lot of ways like him. | EFCC arrests fake Police Commissioner!! Posted: 12 Oct 2013 05:46 AM PDT  The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has arrested a serial impostor, Kunle Adeshola, a self-acclaimed Assistant Commissioner of Police, who has been parading himself as an operative of the Commission and defrauding officials of government agencies under the guise of conducting phantom investigations. According to a statement, on Friday, by the Commission's Acting Head, Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, Mr. Adeshola was nabbed on Thursday as he tried to browbeat the chief executive of a federal government agency into writing a letter to the Inspector General of Police to second the impostor to the agency.Mr. Uwujaren added that the letter was duly written by the unsuspecting chief executive who was made to believe that the fraudster had been detailed to help sanitise the agency. However, Mr. Adeshola was arrested before he could "resume duties" at the agency. At the time of his arrest two fake identity cards were found on him. One of the cards, bore the name, K. Adeshola (ACP), and identified him as a staff of a non- existent EFCC Monitoring Unit; while the other was a police ID card with number: APF NO. 02576 and the name, Dr. Kunle Adeshola. Fake documents, including NYSC Discharge and Exemption Certificates and blank copies of University of Jos certificate, were found at the suspect's home in Lugbe, Abuja. The EFCC also stated that Mr. Adeshola, who claims to hold a doctorate degree in Criminology from the University of Maiduguri, confessed to parading himself under different pseudonyms, such as Dr Kunle Shoal, Dr K. Adeshola ACP, and Sunday Mealayeshe Adekunle. Investigations by the EFCC revealed that it was not the first time that the suspect would be impersonating law enforcement officials and duping unsuspecting officials of government agencies and members of the public. The Commission, therefore, appealed to those who had been duped by the suspect in a similar fashion to come forward with information, as investigation into the scam was ongoing. | SHOCKER!!! Train knocks dead six elephants!! Posted: 12 Oct 2013 05:29 AM PDT  An adult male elephant was Friday mowed down by a train in West Bengal's Darjeeling district, a forest official said. The incident comes a day after a jumbo with its head chopped off was found also in the same district.  The incident happened in Mongpong, located on the fringe of Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, when the Siliguri-Alipurduar Express hit the jumbo. "The incident happened Friday morning. There is a need to further restrict the speed limit of the trains on the Siliguri-Alipurduar stretch. We are discussing on lowering the speed limit to below 25 km," said Chief Wildlife Warden N.C.Bahugun 450 × 320 - kalimpongnews.net Since 2004, when the tracks on the 163-km long Siliguri-Alipurduar route were converted to broad gauge, speeding trains have mowed nearly 40 elephants. Following the spate of mowing down incidents, in 2010 the speed of the trains was been restricted to 50 km. | Associated Airlines plane crash: "Pilot’s error caused Lagos plane crash" - AIB Reports!! Posted: 12 Oct 2013 05:07 AM PDT  Barely 10 days after the Associated Airlines Embraer 120 aircraft crashed at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos, killing 14 passengers, the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has said that the preliminary readout and analysis of flight 361 flight recorder indicated that the right engine of the aircraft was faulty. The agency also said that preliminary investigation indicated that the captain-in-command of the ill-fated aircraft, Abdulrahman Yakubu, ignored the warning from the onboard computer voice. This was disclosed to journalists by the Commissioner for AIB, Capt. Usman Muktar, while reading out the preliminary readout and analysis of flight 361's flight recorders in Abuja yesterday. He said the investigation was done in AIB laboratory in Abuja in conjunction with international flight recorder experts from Canada, who designed the laboratory. Capt. Mukthar said the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) contained approximately 47 hours in solid state memory, while the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) contained thirty-two and a half minutes of audio, which included internal conversation of two pilots, radio calls, and the overall environment in the cockpit. Muktar said that Associated Airlines flight 361 was cleared for take-off by the Air Traffic Controller on runway 18 left of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) Lagos, adding that at that time, the wind was calm and weather was not considered a factor in the accident. He added that four seconds after the engine power was advanced to commence take off roll, the crew received an automated warning from the onboard computer voice which consisted of three chimes followed by "Take off Flap, Take off Flap, Take off flap." He stated that this configuration warning suggested that the flaps were not in the correct position for take-off and there was evidence that the crew might have chosen not to use flaps for the take-off. According to him, "This warning did not appear to come as any surprise to the crew, and they continued normally with the take-off. This warning continues throughout the take-off roll." Capt. Mukhtar added that AIB was in the process of verifying the accuracy of the flight data, adding that the agency had not been able to confirm the actual flap setting and that AIB was expected to determine this in the fullness of time. The AIB commissioner added that the 'set power' call was made by the captain and the 'power is set' was confirmed by the First Officer as expected in the normal operations, adding that approximately three seconds after the 'power is set' call, the First Officer noted that the aircraft was moving slowly. Approximately seven seconds after the 'power is set' call, the internal aircraft voice warning system could be heard stating 'Take off Flap, Auto Feather'. He explained that auto feather refers to the pitch of the propeller blades, adding that in the feather position, the propeller does not produce any thrust. The Flight Data Recorder, he said, contains several engine related parameters, which the AIB was studying. "At this time, we can state that the right engine appears to be producing considerably less thrust than the left engine. The left engine appeared to be working normally. The aircraft automated voice continued to repeat, Take off Flap, Auto Feather.' " According to an aircraft engineer, Sheri Kyari, the flap on an aircraft is located at the trailing edge of the wing. It is at the rear end of the wings. Kyari, a former president of Pilots and Aircraft Engineers in the defunct Nigeria Airways Limited, the function of the flap when operational increases the surface area of the wing, thereby generating enough lift at low aircraft speeds. This is when the aircraft is taking off or landing. Kyari, is convener and executive director, Centre of Aviation Safety and Research. "When the flap is not set to the required degree for take off, the aircraft will have to do a long take-off run before gaining enough lift to lift-off the ground," he said. Reading out the preliminary report, AIB said "the standard 'eighty knots' call was made by the First Officer. The first evidence that the crew indicated that there was a problem with the take-off roll was immediately following the 'eighty knots' call. "The First Officer asked if the take-off should be aborted approximately 12 seconds after the 'eighty knots' callout" AIB added that the captain, in response to the Flight Officer's question to abort the take off, said that they should continue, adding that the crew did not make V1 call, which is the speed at which the decision to abort or continue a take-off is made, or the Vr call, which indicates the speed at which it is planned to rotate the aircraft. The Commissioner added that normally, the non-flying pilot pulls back both the V1 and the Vr speeds, He said that when the Vr was called, the flying pilot pulled back the control column. The First Officer asked the Captain 'gently', a word that indicated that the aircraft was not performing normally. He added that the aircraft did not produce enough overall thrust and that it was difficult or impossible to climb without risk of an aerodynamics stall. An aviation expert, Mallam Muhammadu Dodo, described aerodynamics as the streamline of air flow around the aircraft due to its design. It enables it to attain a stable and safe flight. Immediately after lift-off, the aircraft slowly veered off the runway, heading to the right and was not climbing, and that the aircraft behaviour made ATC to ask the pilot if Flight 361 operation was normal but that they did not respond, and that 31 seconds after the warning, the aircraft crashed. | ||||||||

| Good news: ASUU: Strike Is Suspended, SSANU urges members to return to work on the 14th of October Posted: 12 Oct 2013 03:31 AM PDT  The suspension of the strike is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday and signed by the association's National Secretary, Mr Promise Adewusi. It said that the decision to suspend the strike was informed by the Federal Government's compliance with the association's demands. "Following substantial compliance to our demand for the payment of August and September salaries of our members which is the reason for our current national strike action, we hereby suspend the strike and direct all our members to return to their duties with effect from Monday, the 14th of October, 2013." The statement thanked members of the association for their solidarity, adding that the non payment of the salaries of its members for work done would not happen again. (NAN) VANGUARD |
