| "Covenant University will be among World's top 10 University by 2022" -Bishop Oyedepo Reveals.. Posted: 22 Oct 2013 09:08 AM PDT The Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun, Dr David Oyedepo, said on Monday that the institution would be among the top 10 universities in the world by 2022. Oyedepo made the remark at the institution's 11th Founder's Day celebration in Ota. According to him, the university has since inception in 2002, focused on actualising its mandate, which is primarily to raise leaders who will change the world. "It is in view of this that we are launching our new vision and, therefore want to charge the faculty managements to invest maximally in the review of our curriculum. "We must strive to review pragmatically, the contents of our curriculum by bringing it into the realities of the day. "Let us not be afraid of trying out new things in new ways because unless this is done, you cannot move forward. "We must strive to have the creative mind of Christ to review our curriculum in order to truly meet the needs of the society," he said. The Chancellor said that empowering the people intellectually and practicalising it through inventions and discoveries was key in taking universities to higher levels. He charged the students to be excellent performers, especially in the area of self-discipline, as it was a major tool in becoming great leaders. The chancellor later inaugurated projects in the institution, among which was the vision 10:2022 (1 of 10 in 10) billboard. He also inaugurated the glass blowing laboratory at the chemistry department of the institution as part of activities lined up for the celebration. The laboratory is meant for fabricating, moulding and re-moulding of glass. The Head of Department of Chemistry, Dr Kolawale Ajanaku, said that the laboratory would enable students to turn waste to wealth by picking up broken glasses and putting them into use. He said that the laboratory would not serve the students alone but would be open to members of the public for training. Covenant University, which was established on Oct. 21, 2002, has graduated more than 10, 000 students. (NAN) Vanguard | ||

| Lovely!! Kanye West Proposes to Kim Kardashian on Her Birthday! Posted: 22 Oct 2013 07:48 AM PDT G.O.O.D music boss Kanye West has proposed to girlfriend of 18 months Kim Kardashian days after telling the audience at his concert in Seattle on Saturday that he planned to marry her 'one day.' The 36-year-old rapper popped the question to the reality star on her 33rd birthday on Monday with a 15 carat diamond ring at the AT&T Park baseball stadium in San Francisco, and later surprised her with family and friends pouring out of the dugouts. In a snap posted on Instagram, Kim can be seen holding her ring finger towards the camera as she flashes her gigantic dazzling engagement band while smiling broadly alongside her man. Kanye was in Los Angeles earlier in the day at the Hollywood Film Awards, and it was therefore unclear whether he planned to spend Kim's birthday with her. The rapper flew in from San Francisco Monday to present director Steve McQueen with a special honor award at the ceremony, and it appears he flew straight back to the Bay Area city straight afterwards to see the mother of his child. Kim was allegedly seen boarding a private jet that afternoon with her family in Los Angeles. Channels | ||

| "Begging will not end this strike" ASUU Warns Jonathan! Posted: 22 Oct 2013 06:10 AM PDT ![]() The Academic Staff Union of Universities has turned down President Goodluck Jonathan's plea for the lecturers to end their 114-day-old strike. The Chairman of ASUU at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Prof. Adegbola Akinola, and his University of Ibadan chapter counterpart, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, said university teachers would only return to the classrooms if the government honoured the 2009 agreement it entered into with them. They spoke just as the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, berated the union, saying it had taken unionism to an all time low. But Akinola told journalists during a rally staged by members of the union in Ile-Ife on Monday, that Jonathan needed not beg for the strike to be called off. He said, "ASUU does not need any plea from Mr. President. We are not asking for impossible things. The Federal Government reached an agreement with us and we are asking them to honour it. It is so simple. "Government should be honourable. Is it honourable not to honour an agreement? Certainly no. The Federal Government should not allow the public universities to continue to degenerate. Posterity will not forgive us if we allow public universities to totally collapse. "Our country has the resources to honour the agreement but education is not given priority. "The Minister of Aviation (Mrs Stella Oduah) just got two bulletproof cars bought for N255m by an agency under her supervision. So, who do you want to tell that this country does not have the resources? "We won't allow public universities to be destroyed. That is why they are establishing private universities all over the country with the nation's money. Except those owned by the missionaries, tell me which of the private universities was not established with the nation's resources?" Akinola said that infrastructure were decaying in public universities because of the neglect they had suffered. He explained that the strike was not about members of the union but a means to force the government to do the right things. The ASUU chief warned that children from poor homes might no longer have access to university education if the union should succumb to the blackmail being employed against it by the government. Also Ajiboye said at a town hall meeting and presentation of the National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy assessment report to clerics , civil society, labour and students at the Trenchard Hall, UI on Monday, that Jonathan's plea would not make ASUU end the strike. He said, "Will the President be quiet if his children are in one of our public institutions and be at home for four months? Does he care about the future of the country while the children of the masses in public institutions have been asking their leader to be more sensitive and patriotic enough to public institutions? "How many years of appeal will make the President implement a four-year-old agreement? The truth is that we are tired of appeals. We need action . "In ASUU, our belief is that today's event will shape the future. We cannot live on appeal while the children of the rich use public funds to study abroad and even make use of government scholarship scheme." However, about 200 heavily armed policemen on Monday stopped members of ASUU from carrying out an enlightenment walk on the strike in Calabar, Cross River State. The walk was organised by the University of Calabar and Cross River State University of Technology branches of ASUU. It was to take off from the UNICAL gate at 7am through some streets of Calabar, but the policemen ensured the union members did not leave the gate of the institution. They said they were acting on "orders from above." The Chairman ASUU, UNICAL branch, Dr. James Okpiliya, said, "Our union is law- abiding. We wrote to the police and other security agencies on our intention of walking the streets in pursuance of our cause to put the records straight. "Many groups have been walking the streets giving people the wrong impression about the situation. We just want to put the records straight. The police are telling us that they have orders from above not let us walk the streets of Calabar. It is a shame. You can all see the hypocrisy of government. "They allowed youths and market women but they would not let us do the same. We would remain resolute. No amount of provocation would stop us. "We are not on strike because of our salaries. We are fighting for our students and the terrible conditions of our universities. Most of our science students do not know the difference between a Bunsen burner and a stove. They don't even know the chemicals. "The Tertiary Education Trust Fund today has become a main funding source of our universities, but this is not to be so. TETFUND is only an intervention agency. Government has bailed out banks and even Nollywood, but not our universities. "The strike would continue as long as the government remains adamant. The President said after all, the strike in Ghana lasted two years; so that means this one could continue even up to five years." The Chairman of ASUU, CRUTECH branch, Dr Nsing Ogar, said the Federal Government must honour the 2009 agreement. But university administrators in the country on Monday expressed concern over the strike and appealed to both ASUU and the Federal Government to urgently reach a compromise on the issue. The National President of the Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators, Mr. Samuel Mwansat, made this appeal at the ongoing annual retreat of the National Council Members of the association at the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun in Ogun State. He stressed that the current disagreement between ASUU and the government required "understanding." In Abuja, Okonjo-Iweala, accused ASUU of taking unionism to an all time low with its latest approach to the strike. She accused the union of introducing politics to the strike through the distribution of "flyers riddled with lies in mosques in the North." The minister, in a statement by her Special Adviser, Paul Nwabuikwu, said contrary to the position being spread by ASUU, she had not taken a "take-it-or-leave-it approach" to the face-off between the union and government. She claimed that it was ASUU that had taken such an approach, saying no government had been as responsive to the demands of the striking lecturers as that of Jonathan. The statement reads in part, "Contrary to some recent media reports, the Federal Government has not adopted a take-it-or-leave-it approach in its negotiations with ASUU. Rather, the approach is focused on positive engagement and achieving sustainable solutions to the challenges facing higher education in the country. "That is why President Jonathan recently appealed to ASUU to respond to government's positive steps by calling off its strike in the interest of suffering students and parents. "Despite this, for several days now, some elements in ASUU have been distributing pamphlets and flyers with abusive and inflammatory messages against Dr. Okonjo-Iweala in mosques and other places. This is taking academic unionism to a new low and infusing it with unnecessary politics. I am sure majority of ASUU members are not in support of this." She said the government was working hard to seek practical and sustainable solutions to the challenges facing higher education in the country. According to her, " The President has made available N100bn a year in the first instance to repair hostels, laboratories and classrooms and other facilities in the universities. "An offer of N30bn has also been made to ASUU towards the earned allowances of its members." | ||

| Panic and Confusion in Imo State as school boys launch rocket!! Posted: 22 Oct 2013 05:43 AM PDT What further heightened people's anxiety was when they also noticed a thick smoke coming from the hapless man's compound. They had every reason to believe that Boko Haram insurgents had invaded the community. News quickly spread that a rocket had landed in Eke's compound. They were right but it was not coming from Boko Haram! Indeed it later turned out that there really was no cause for alarm as the rocket was nothing but a practical expression of the technological talents of an ex-student of Federal Government College, Okigwe, Gideon Chiadikobi Emenike and his friend, Chibuisi Nwafor. The duo fabricated and launched a rocket that travelled over five kilometres into the sky before crash landing. The exploits of these youthful Nigerians may never have come to light but for the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Katsina. Again, if they had been treated like common criminals, the story may have taken a different shape. Truth is that Katsina moved journalists to Okigwe for on-the-spot assessment of the exploits of the young lads. Giving account of what happened to newsmen, the Commissioner of Police said although the boys who fabricated the device were reckless, preliminary investigations did not raise any serious security concern. "I will not, for security reasons disclose all the details we have concerning the device. What I want you to understand is that one of the components is something very common, something you and I use on a daily basis- sugar. We know sugar is highly inflammable. It is this sugar and some other components that propelled this device you hear that crash landed in Okigwe. "Although the young boys can be said to be excessively reckless, preliminary investigations have not shown any criminal motive behind the adventure. I see the development as an excursion into the world of science and technology by some adventurous, skillful and intelligent young boys with incredible creativity. "This endowment propelled them into designing their own style of spacecraft.
"Let me also say that people should feel free and go about their normal business. We have taken possession of the whole area. Everything has been cleared, cleaned and rendered safe for human habitation. Apart from the initial pandemonium and fear created in the minds of the people in the neighbourhood, everything ended well. "The boys are just between 16 and 17 years old. They only tried out their learning while in the secondary school. They wanted to know if they can practicalise the theories they learnt in school. The dream of these young boys is to design a spacecraft. It was launched without funfair. "The device went some kilometres into the sky before crash-landing. Let us not forget that the command has some formidable structures on ground. We have since commenced the sweeping of Imo State of all explosive ordinances. I want these boys to be encouraged. May be, who knows tomorrow, at my old age, I may be the lucky one that would fly in the spacecraft made by these young lads. "So, I would rather not think of punitive measures against the boys. I would rather dwell heavily on protection, rehabilitation and encouragement of these young boys. Those who ran away are free to come back. From this moment, we have ended this case. Gideon speaks: "My name is Gideon Chiadikobi Emenike and my friend's name is Chibuisi Nwafor. I studied in Federal Government College, Okigwe and I graduated last year. This project started when I was still in school. I was told to build a project in school for a competition. "In my SS1, I built a helicopter. In my SS2, I was told to build another project. I built this rocket and we went for a competition in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. I came second in the competition with the project. This was at the national level. "We also went for another competition organised by the Society for Science and Technology. I also came second. I also went for Olympiad and I equally came second there. I was told that I was going to represent Nigeria in Brazil but later, my principal said that I was no longer going to represent the country. "I still don't know why the principal cancelled the trip. This frustrated me somehow but later, I picked up from where I dropped and started again. I now met my friend at a learning centre. I found out that he has for things related to science. We now pooled our brains together. "That was how we planned to build a rocket and a satellite, as well as sending it into space. It was an amateur satellite because you know we have not yet university graduates. We just graduated from secondary school last year. "We have done this for now. I was really challenged when I heard that other countries were planning to launch satellites into space. It made me to think deep. This is what pushed to do what you are seeing today. If government can adopt our technology, we can help them to actualize their dream of launching a satellite. "This particular project was a mere attempt to reach a particular altitude. It was not fashioned to remain in space. This project came through after several experiments. If the Federal Government can sponsor us, we can take Nigeria to any level they want. The boy's father speaks "My name is Friday Mgbemena Emenike. My son is curious about science. He got admission in University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, the last time. I tried to make him to study medicine but he rejected it and preferred to read aeronautic engineering. That was why he refused the admission. That is why he is still at home. "He got an opportunity to travel to Brazil but the principal of his former school frustrated the move. He is intelligent. I am aware of this incident. When it happened, I didn't feel too good till I learnt that the thing did not kill anybody and that it did not destroy anything. That increased my joy and I described it as the first victory. "The question which Vanguard Metro and well meaning people of Imo State are asking is whether the Federal and State governments have taken note of the success recorded by these boys. What they will do with these boys thereafter equally remains a huge guess. | ||

| (MUST READ) "I’m proud of my curves" - Mama Ajasco Brags!! Posted: 22 Oct 2013 04:53 AM PDT Among the sitcoms making waves in the country, Papa Ajasco and Company ranks higher. And one of the lead characters that make people laugh whenever the show is on television is Moji Oyetayo also known as Mama Ajasco. In this interview with The Sun, the plus size comedian talks about her career, personality, and sex. You will really enjoy it! You've been quite busy these days. How have you been coping? The Lord has been faithful. I have been getting loads of jobs these days. Slow and steady they say wins the race but I am getting it fast, fast and I am certainly winning the race. I have been getting feedback from producers and marketers. I have done lots of soaps and movies and I have broken the jinx because I was involved in a Yoruba epic. When I got to the location, I told them to please manage my Yoruba language but when I heard 'action', I did not believe what I was speaking. I really did so well and from that particular location I got three other scripts. So, I am grateful to God for his faithfulness. How do you juggle all these jobs with your conventional role as Mama Ajasco?Luckily for me, my being Mama Ajasco has not affected anything because at Wale Adenuga Productions, we do bulk shooting at the first season and second seasons. So, I have the time to move from one location to the other or do whatever I want to do. Aside the roles you have taken up, do you look forward to a particular role?Ironically, I have been doing lots of comedy and that is just one side of me. I am a funny person and when people got to know that side of me, they just bombard me with scripts, but I intend to take up some more serious roles. Meanwhile, I have taken up some motherly roles, and also bitchy roles. These roles are basically for plus size ladies. Our father is rich but all his daughters are not married because they are plus size, so, our father was trying to see how he would sell us to men to marry. I am looking forward to a role that will portray the real me. I am a serious minded person and I love to speak Queen's English. When they give me comedy roles I have to speak pidgin or water down my English so I could pass the message across. What about roles that will reveal the sexy part of you?I am a professional to the core. I am an African and I know that you are not expected to go nude or have sex in the movies and all of that. I understand my limitations as an African woman but I also respect my professionalism, which means if I get a script that says I should go out of my clothes, I will take it and act it professionally. I shot a job in Calabar in January. It was a horror movie but my part was the sex relief part. It was a situation where the governor's daughter was kidnapped and there was catastrophe in the land. My own part was being the governor's girl friend, and the governor felt in the heat of the problem that he needed to relax and they brought this voluminous, gorgeous girl which was me, so I had to start massaging him. I had to striptease, which means I had to take away a little bit of my clothes, up to my luxuries and I did this flawlessly. I do not intend to go nude because I am an African woman and I am proud of my curves. I have dignity which means we should always learn to cover our body, so, I wouldn't go nude on TV but I can act anything. You can actually be seen and not be seen. It's a mental picture. Have you been carried away in the course of acting a romantic role?It has never happened to me but I think it happens when you are physically attracted to that person. If you are physically attracted to someone and you find yourself in a role like that, it can happen. But it has not happened to me. What aspiration do you have that you are yet to achieve?I have just one aspiration and that is to have my own talk show, and each day I get closer to my dreams. Don't you think talk shows are becoming proliferated? There are talk shows you will watch and you would not want to leave it and there are some that you will never be caught watching. In my case, I know what I am up to. For instance, there are lots of talk shows in America but Oprah Winfrey is Oprah Winfrey. Let me take you back to the plus size movie you shot. Some are of the opinion that plus size ladies find it hard to marry. What is your personal experience? It's a fallacy that men do not like plus size women. It's the biggest fallacy that the white men are trying sell to us. Don't be deceived; an African man is attracted to curves. I am an African woman and I know it. Do you know how many people talk to me on a daily basis, even when I am in my car? Honestly, that is a big fallacy. It does not work. An African woman is sexy and an African man loves to see curves and hold curves in his bed, so why would you tell me that an African man does not like plus size women? It is a lie. Could it be as a result of having numerous admirers that you are having problems choosing who to settle down with?Must we always talk about marriage? I beg leave me. God will certainly perfect all that concerns Moji Oyetayo. I am not in any hurry. Remember I have been married before and divorced and I don't think I have any reason to rush into another one. Instead, let me take my time to enjoy the privilege of being single. Don't you want me to be going on free lunch dates? I beg…husband will come, better one go come o, better one go come sef. Ladies of nowadays want to remain single especially when they've got one or two kids. As a mother of one, what is your opinion?I will not say that what you said is not true. Once ladies have kids these days they are just fine. That does not mean we are trying to use men as baby factories. The truth of the matter is that when you look at the rate at which marriages are failing you are not really excited to want to run into it. I don't believe you should not be able to stay under a man because you have a child or you want to remain in your comfort zone. I intend to marry again, I will marry again officially and I will stay till death do us part. Do you have any unpleasant experience as a plus size lady?Yes, I experience all sorts. One is when I park my car and want to cross to the other side of the road. Jeez… can't a woman walk without attention? I can't boldly walk without attention and it kills me. If you ask me to escort you to that boutique opposite the house, I won't because I know what will happen. Some stare with glee, some with lust and admiration. So, you won't find me walking on the streets of Lagos. If my car is not good, I stay at home or call a cab or a friend. Two, the banks have this stupid entrance… it used to disgrace them not me (hearty laughter). When I enter, the door begins to say all sorts of things. It's only my bank, GTB that does not do that rubbish. I am not trying to sell them o, but that of Fidelity Bank, when I enter it begins to say 'only one person at a time'. And I will ask 'how many are we?' And of course, the door says it loud and everyone starts laughing. But because I am a comedian, I will also ask 'how many of us you dey see, open make I pass'. I will just make mockery of the whole thing but it's really killing. Is it also true that men don't like plus size ladies because its stressful having sex with them?Won o mo angle ti won ma fi deal pelu e ni (they don't know the angle with which to deal with it) If you don't know how to handle it don't go there, leave it for those who know how to handle it. End of story (laughs). What are the plus and minus of being Mama Ajasco? The plus is that I get to many places and people recognize me and of course, it places you on a higher pedestal. Producers deal with me with respect because they believe I have a name and I'm good. It's been good for me because it makes it easy for me to penetrate the industry. So, it opens doors for me and makes me relate with people without restriction. Does it have a minus? The only minus there is that people see me and expect to see an elderly person. That's all. |
